i feel like crying because, regardless of what crticism genshin deserves, it's a game that has helped me cope with a lot of issues, gave me pretty good memories, and made me fall with its characters, worldbuilding and lore...I've tried so hard to get into it again but i just can't, so I'll just miss it forever.
Edit after 7 months (this is what i replied to someone in the comments but i think that anyone who watches this video or reads these comments and think it's ridiculous should read this and shut the fuck up, you are no one to tell anyone how to feel about anything, stop bothering ppl writing their hearts out in this comment section): As the OP of the first comment, you couldn't be more wrong. I was 18 when genshin dropped, it wasn't my first game either, obviously. if you thought a little bit you'd realize that it also dropped during covid, people (including me) were struggling a lot, had ppl they care about dying of covid, etc w/o mentioning other personal issues. you can call me a snowflake all you want but you'll never make me feel ashamed for getting emotionally attached to stories and art, i feel like this with every piece of media or art I've ever loved and it's okay for me to feel sad about not being able to enjoy it anymore. You sound like an incel redditor, that's even more embarrassing than actually showing emotions like a normal person.

The game helped you, the company that ran the game is another story, but its great to have those memories and to leave them as such. Really well done video. You explained what a lot of players feel and weren't exactly able to put into words fully. From a content creator perspective, I FEEL the general tiredness of the playerbase (and viewerbase). We love the game, the universe, the story...we feel attached to it but don't feel like there is a meaningful way to engage with it right now, beyond limited events. I'm grateful for the work hoyo puts in to new areas and new stories but there is something so lacking in the daily repeatable content.
I'm glad hoyo is working on it (they said so in patch notes) but it is wild how long its taken. same with all the bugs and strange design/UI issues. why doesn't our cooldown reset when you restart an abyss chamber? they restart with limited events so why cant they fix this? it feels like a lack of care.
And if its all about story, why can't we access old limited quests? quests that are SO IMPORTANT to the lore and character development. It makes me wonder what the end goal of the game beyond money.
And just to be clear, im not blaming writers, designers, artists, etc,. Its so clear how much love they pour into these stories and characters. A lot of these decisions gotta go down a massive flagpole before they get to us.

I think it was a big mistake for them to say that they weren't making any end-game content. No matter how much you love a game, without end-game content/replayable content, then you're going to get bored of it. And the only replayable content we have right now is the spiral abyss and TCG. You never hear anyone saying that Spiral Abyss is a fun thing to do, and if you simply aren't into card games, then you're out of luck. The only reason I've been playing this long is exploration. Most people find it absolute torture, but thankfully for me I actually enjoy exploring everything and opening literally every single chest in the game, so with Sumeru and all the terrain they released I was entertained, I loved admiring the beauty of the sights around me, but even then exploring wasn't quite as fun as it used to be. I also think they should allow us to replay all of the story that we have played before. All of it, especially archon quests, even limited event stories if we've played them before. I don't understand WHY they refuse to let us replay archon quests and the 5 star story quests. I would love to relive some of those wonderful story moments again in game(watching it on RUclips just isn't the same), it gives us something to do, they don't have to award us primogems for replaying it, it's literally zero skin off of their back. So why in the world are they refusing to let us replay the story without any rewards? it makes no sense, it's like they're trying to bore us

Not burned out but have certainly taken breaks. I think that's the biggest challenge with Genshin; there's SO MUCH to do, but at the same time you can also feel really pressured to complete everything event-wise in time or simply even keep up the mountain of tasks and farming. I regularly raid in FFXIV and play a good handful of other games in the downtime so in a rush to complete the rest of Sumeru and Summer Paradise, I am certainly back to pushing Genshin hard again.
It's certainly been an amazing game for better or worse!

The reason so many people become burned out is that the game is designed to pull you in with it's early game content and then expects you to stay and grind well into the late game. It's hard to put into words exactly, but small problems become more apparent as you progress into mid and late game, and just simply compound on top of each other until it becomes too much for the player.

"Where did all the magic go?", "I miss the way that this game made me feel"
Oh god, i relate to this so much. Started playing in 1.3, when xiao's banner dropped. I remember exploring monstadt and liyue, it was truly magical - the feeling of accomplishing quests and literally getting to greater heights, it was always breathtaking. That was where i felt the magic. When GAA dropped, personally, genshin's magic was at its peak, that's also the time i get to play with friends (and all of us needed each other's help since none of us have maxed out chars). It was one of the most fun i had in any game i played, so far. Inazuma dropped, the magic was still near its peak, but it took just a little dip. It was still magical - where liyue and mons still felt "logical", inazuma's magic was it's mind-boggling "world-building". Nothing made sense, and that's why it was beautiful. The story was soooo good too (archon quests of mons up to sumeru). It was always an adventure and u will always be in for a surprise. Patch 1.6 and 2.0 will always have a special place in my heart (the last patch i felt this magic was when enkanomiya dropped, but even then it wasn't in the same level as those 2 patches). The patches after that (2.1 or 2.2, and beyond), I was already feeling the magic (slowly but surely) fading away. I honestly dont know how i kept myself playing this game until the patch b4 Baizhu's banner dropped. Now that i think about it, 1 (of many) the things that made me quit was the 1st cardgame-heavy event. I just couldn' be bothered with it (this was also the time the college semester was getting harder for me). It was the perfect time to quit so i did. I didnt miss genshin when i was not playing it, tbh. I tried going back after the semester ended (just this current patch), but it really lost it's magic for me. I thought i would go back just for the story, but now, idk...
I will always miss that "magic", it was one of the best experiences I had in life, even if it's "just" from a game.

Okay the fact that this was basically almost me to a T. I started right before 1.3, and fell hard for the world and magic. I’m a huge fantasy lover so this game was right up my alley. And I loved it, truly did, I spent hours a day just grinding and exploring the world, being all up to date on quests, finding secret ones and trying to max out the statues.
1.6 was definitely the most fun for me, with the map and story and the hype from the upcoming inazuma release, I remember driving in the boat and hearing the music and just sat there in awe taking in the beauty of the world and I felt like I never wanted to leave.
But then the magic started wearing off..I think sometime in the mid 2.0 patches, around Enka release and Chasm. At the time I was still playing consistently but it was far less, and I was getting tired with some repeating events. Then 2.7 I had the first lapse, around three weeks of me not playing with the occasional log in to do coms and log right off. At that point I felt something was wrong but shook it off, although I never played for more than an hour now.
Sumeru release patch brought back the magic temporarily. I played it for a long while and felt that mystical wonder of being in a new place, before it quickly wore off. At that point I realized I was truly burnt out and couldn’t keep forcing myself to go on everyday. So I stopped, only hopping on to complete the last few days of an event or collecting mail, but coms were no longer a priority.
I stopped doing anything completely this update with the Sumeru event. I was already taking a break, and even after seeing the trailer, saw the banners it wasn’t enough to bring me back into the game. I’ve reached a point where I can’t afford the time to play it, especially when the people I used to play it with don’t go on anymore and the events aren’t enough to intrigue me. That and HSR has taken up my attention as well.
It’s sad. I really wanted to get in but the moment I reach the loading screen I just leave. I simply can’t bring myself to play it once more, i guess after all those 10+ hour grinds I used to do in pandemic it’s really starting to catch up to me. That and well, I realized after I found other games as well that genshin isn’t the greatest at rewarding players that are hardcore. Games like arknights have a nice progression where you earn better stuff the more time you invest, with genshin it was a hit or miss, especially in artifact grinds. That and the fact I was no longer in those pandemic times, so that meant less time to play it.
This has gone on for too long and I apologize but seeing this video and how it succinctly describes my thoughts, and to see others that felt the same, was really touching.
Now I plan to prob go back for Fontaine release, but mainly for main story. Maybe for characters, I’m really digging Wriothesely’s design but otherwise I’m out for the time being. I still try keeping somewhat up to date on new stuff or looking at fan work but that’s about it for the near future. Hopefully I’ll feel good enough to come back, and that y’all do too.

Genshin is definitely not a game you can grind every day and feel rewarded for it. It's a very casual game to log in when you want, do what you want to do, and log out. Unless you are like me, a person that enjoys pointless grinding every day for artifacts, achievements, lore, etc. I've played almost since launch, pretty much every day, and I still enjoy the game, events, abyss, combat mechanics, elemental reactions, etc.

It's very sad to see people that want to enjoy the game, but can't anymore, however, at the end of the day everyone has a different idea of what the game should look like and Hoyoverse can't and won't satisfy everyone. I remember really enjoying doing the story and archon quests for mondstat and liyue when the game was still young. The dialog was interesting and entertaining enough to keep me paying attention and the story was in general well structured. The best part was that one quest would unlock everything in the entire region so you could explore absolutely everything as you pleased.
As far as I'm aware, nowadays you need to do world quests with no voice acting that are longer than old story quests in order to unlock some story/archon quests that are themselves unnecessarily long for what feels like absolutely no storyline progression. On top of this shit, the dialogue is far more repetitive than I remember and paimon's voice makes me want to commit unspeakable atrocities.
The story and archon quests used to be something I really enjoyed in this game, perhaps even my favorite part of the game, but now it's a horrible chore that makes me want to either close the game or continue grinding aimlessly

Absolutely. I literally cannot play this game without a fucking autoclicker, or I’dve had to replace my mouse be now. If most gamers weren’t already conditioned to consume slop, this probably would have killed the game.

  • @Freenos
    @Freenos Год назад +505

To me, Genshin burn out comes from being forced to do "chores" to get to the fun stuff. For a lot of people these chores manifest in daily commissions, artifact grinding, min-maxing resin consumption, battlepass leveling, F.O.M.O minigame events, and the fear of losings the fifty-fifty on an anticipated character. Those chores developed over the course of the player's gametime because a lot of it is tied to the Primogem -> Gacha -> New Character cycle born from the desire to expand our ways to have fun playing the game in the first place.
Think back to when you first started the game, the feeling of unimpeded discovery, not only of the map but of the game systems and elemental reactions. The moment you discovered the Cryo Regisvine and Anemo Hypostasis or the thrill of reading "Snow-Covered Path (Highly Dangerous)" in Dragonspine for the first time. These moments are slowly replaced by mastery of the game's systems and we subconsciously min-max the "fun" out of the game. We try to explore Inazuma but it's gated behind an extensive questline at AR 30, we try to explore the caves of Sumeru but it's gated behind a voiceless sidequest that is as lengthy as the region's Archon questline. A new player tries to ascend Shenhe or Yae Miko but find out they won't be able to reach their leveling bosses for weeks while their favorite characters grow weaker as their world level ascends.
For me the gacha has always been secondary to the exploration and gameplay (combat) so I enjoy the spiral abyss for the most part. New areas continue to draw me in but is usually hampered by questlines stopping or limiting my fun. The gacha experience can especially sours enthusiasm as failing to get a character will undoubtabley drain the drive to continue playing the event/story, especially since characters are teased all the time so the hype of playing a new character may be all that motivates that player at the moment.

    • @lucidragon5260
      @lucidragon5260 Год назад +16

I felt so free when I stopped caring about the gacha system. Then I burnt out because my world level is too high for my characters, and the grind to get them up to strength is too daunting. Even just trace and ascension materials are a pain, not to mention artifacts.
I would love to return to Genshin, and I have tried a few times, but it's just too hard for me to get back to that level where things were fun and grinding didn't take too long. And when I try to play through the story, the dialogue is so bloated that I stop caring.
Honestly there is so much Mihoyo can do to improve the game. If traversal were easier, grinding would be quicker and easier. If they added a skip button for the story quests, people who don't care about the story could get to the parts they like.
I don't have much hope that Genshin will change for the better, though I'll probably keep hopping on a couple times a year to play a little and grind some more. Maybe it will clock again for me someday.

    • @DumbestDumbFool
      @DumbestDumbFool Год назад

@@lucidragon5260 oh i know what should mihoyo put, a warning that after lv 40 you got to have good characters. I'm a casual player, have been playing the whole sumeru region and feeling fine after the same burnt out of not having good chars and feeling intimidated by enemies when I was AR 45. Now that most of the monster are pretty casual (not underpowered), I'm having better time for it, but the quest is piling up and I have not the energy after the very frequent events, which is actually possibly the best events in any game I have tried.
the improvement part is a bit weird, as it incentivizes people to not play the game to enjoy the game. I love BDO, but man I can't stand how fast paced it is, so I guess genshin's slow paced and embrace the more traditional approach to gaming is better for casuals, when you got to be excited for the story and the game than focusing on the lack of time you had to finish this part of the game. Man I wish I have that much time, I got to use my break at work to finish some story.
Oh and adding the button will make it easier for people to skip the story, making their story unheard, and thus making it less fun to create engaging story, and thus harder to sell their character, and thus get lower income and had to make even more predatory elements, and that's a no go. I think having us monkey brain having to at least hit the button to advance some texts made us aware of the story even for a tiny bit, and I'll take that than turning the game into another mobile gacha games.
And the grind, if it is easier wouldn't that make it less rewarding to get the character to be good? my characters rarely have skill lv more than 6, and most of them are in level 70, and honestly I'm pretty fine playing in AR 56. It's the mentality that our characters has to be the best they could, the expectation and the grind you are looking at probably is what makes it daunting and less enjoyable. And I see less and less people who cares about big damages surviving the long project that is Genshin, and no I am not shaming anyone, but I hope the people who got burnout from not having big numbers on their screen can sit back and enjoy the game story and exploration and less about getting into the top ten first abyss finisher or something. Maybe the end game is to explore and have fun, just like how you and everyone who got burnt out said what makes you enjoy the game at first. It was not big damage, it was (fill your own here)

When I gave Genshin a real try I fell in love with it, loved it's characters, story, voice acting, scenes, secondary quests, etc., got hooked and played it every single day to discover new things, understand how the combat worked, get the 100% of every region. Played the game my way, I was enjoying it as an RPG, not a gacha. But that magic started to fade away as soon as I realized that exact thing: playing it my way, with the characters I like the most, the way I liked the most, relaxed, enjoying the story, the narrative, the scenary and unlocking things slowly, was going to completely ruin my experience in the future. Ayaka was my first 5 star but couldn't get her a team because her best teammates weren't even close to be in the banner, didn't care and decided to wait till they were available, which took around 8 months btw, meanwhile I continued playing, enjoying as much as possible, and I really did, but when I realized I couldn't wait forever for the proper team, I focused on getting new characters to progress without issues and to remain having fun.
That, without me noticing it, very slowly took me away from what I loved the most about this game in the first place, it started this non stop cycle of doing everything available to save as much primogems as possible to see if I was lucky enough to get the next character, or save enough till the one I needed for my team arrive, build them, try them in a team, repeat. As I said at first I didn't even noticed it, and was having lots of fun, but with time, Genshin became a game I played to grind instead of enjoying it's world as I did in the beginning. A clear symptom of it is when I finally got Shenhe on her rerun, the character I wanted the most since my early days in Genshin thanks to her story and character overall, I even got her C3 with her weapon, just to play for a couple of weeks more and don't touch the game ever since.
Didn't feel the excitement I used to, it became that rush of having a character but after that you feel empty, bored. The efforts you do simply don't pay off, you grind for weeks for a character, if you planned ahead correctly then it means you have the proper team, play with that team and enjoy for a while but if you want to try something new, that means you have to repeat the cycle I wrote above again and again, meaning that you will be spending your whole time trying to get to enjoy the game, instead of enjoying the game in the process.

To sum it down, genshin is a story based open world exploration game, and that's what's fun about it. Later you learn about different characters and the pulling system so you continue playing to pull 5stars and 4star cons and it's a dopamine rush and super satisfying when you get the characters you want. What makes the game fun is the amazing world and interesting lore and story line. In a few months you've basically explored most of the world and completed the story line. It continues being fun since you get a rush pulling characters even though it's a boring process doing dailies and pretty much boring events over and over. But after a while you have a good amount of 5 stars and getting new ones doesn't change ur account much and the whole process is just repeating, dull, mind numbing and boring. Not to even talk about artifact farming and how repetitive and boring that gets. Been playing for 2 years and recently quit since its just not any fun. But to be fair story based open world exploration games (like breath of the wild, witcher 3, rdr2 etc..) are generally designed to be played from 40-200 hours maybe up to 400max. Once you complete the story, explore the map, complete all horizontal content, there is nothing left to do and you're done. And that's good, you move on, remember it as a fun game and play something else. The problem with genshin is that they try to get you to stick around with the pulling system and you end up playing even after completing all or most content in the game and end up doing boring content and trying to convince yourself that it's fun

I believe the reason why HYV doesn't really try to improve the end game is because most of the players are casuals anyway and wouldn't care and the game is first and foremost, a story exploration game and character collecting. This is also why they can get away with reverse powercreep.

another problem is that against their great story, they make useless filler content. In HSR, the main event now in 1.2 is you telling your adventure to a storyteller and he argues it's uninteresting, so together you craft a fake story around it. I can relate to that, however, I haven't played the archon quests in Sumeru and I can't do it either because the "character is busy somewhere else" and what happens when I try to do the other quest instead? Exactly... another character is busy somewhere else and so on. It just doesn't stop. I don't want to skip through walls of dialogue just to get to an exciting new quest or area in Fontaine.

Genshin also was my main pastime during the pandemic, and the game was SO IMPORTANT to me. I always felt such deep joy and connection with everything the game provided, and it certainly made the pandemic more bearable. Since I went back to the office at the beginning of the year, I was genuinely sad I didn't have enough time to "properly" enjoy the game anymore. It soon started feeling so overwhelming, and such a chore to log in every day just to do the same things over and over again. I used to love big events such as this last Klee/Eula one SO MUCH, I enjoyed everything about them. But this one was literally painful to play through. It was lore deep to the point where you can't do anything for like 5 minutes until characters stop info-dumping you. I was sad both because I couldn't enjoy the lore and also couldn't enjoy the game BECAUSE of the lore. I'm kinda heartbroken I couldn't care less about Fontaine.

At a certain point, the sense of discovery wears off; we develop a sense of mastery, form opinions, and look for an extrinsic motivator to keep us going, rather than enjoying doing it because it’s fun. Gacha games are very good at the extrinsic motivators (in the beginning), but eventually the reward no longer outweighs the effort to log in every day, and the flaws show through. I believe the solution is a combination of the individual player setting intrinsic motivations for themselves, and the devs finding a way to consistently reward players in *meaningful* ways with clear, lengthy, but *guaranteed* goals, and mitigating the punishment players feel for taking breaks or avoiding burnout.

im currently playing honkai impact 3rd now and so far its just much more respectful of the player by giving you options to outright buy many good characters with ingame currency (that isnt even hard to get). upgrading characters are also much easier and can be done without even using the gacha. even spending money in honkai is a much better deal than spending it in genshin and honkai have a very generous new player experience compared to genshin. there is also many different game modes with elysium realm and open world being my favorites.

There's the secret island near mondstadt that really far and me and my friend tried to cross using kaeya on the sea. But, exploring can be tiring too. Imagine searching for whatever-culus that spread around the world + getting all the chest while keep changing tab between genshin and map marker. And the further you explore, the more things you need to unlock only to be rewarded by cheap change of primo - to the point that I feel like a forced labour slave with minimum wage. Sure sakura cleansing took me hours, but it kept me hooked. Then Sumeru released much more content at a rapid rate (I wasn't even 20% finished with 3.0) and it just went up more and more and I was so overwhelmed I practically lost my motivation. With the spiral abyss, it went from boring to absolutely annoying and mald-inducing. Something to note about 7:50 is that in recent times they've been significantly more willing to make a large portion of prerequisite quests optional; for example the current event only strictly requires that you beat the mondstadt archon quests in order to play (which seems to be a theme with events not held in inazuma, which in those cases require you to only complete the quests required to access the region instead of the whole of it). Fontaine will also be available immediately after completing mondstadt archon quests based on their recent dev blog, and the whole quest lock thing is going to have a (admittedly partial) solution in the form of being able to unlock quests without actually starting them.

What everyone a NEEDS to remember it's Genshin is basically a Skyrim/BotW/etc but gacha so there is regular free expansion DLC. None of those games are played forever in every waking hours.
You taking breaks and playing other things is very much normal and intended.
It is not a WoW or Lost Ark that's built on wasting your time and resetting all your progress regularly in deceptive ways with layers of hamster wheels and progression systems.
The game is not built to accommodate you giving it your entire life. No matter how many hundred hours of content a game has, it will always be finite.
As someone who played nonstop since launch Sumeru was definitely a low point for a whole year in terms of exploration and just the general backdrop because this kind of game works because of the feel of openness and freedom it gives, while in Sumeru you have a Jungle feel simulated by the geography making the place claustrophobic by blocking your vision, and the desert part is the same yellow sand and brown rock aesthetic with a few patches of green for 9 months...
Fontaine is promising in so many ways because of it since it's one again an European aesthetic and not a middle eastern jungle and empty desert with barren rocky mountains.

Incoming Essay: You have been warned, but here is a semi-accurate-though-mostly-vague T.L.D.R: "I relate to a lot of the feelings expressed in this video, but not only with Genshin."
My story with Genshin begins just before the Covid Pandemic began, when I had gotten a serious case of the flu and was running a fever of around 101. I decided to give Genshin Impact a try because it looked very beautiful and seemed like it would be relaxing to explore. I loved Breath of the Wild, so I gave Genshin a try. I enjoyed it a lot at first, but in that first sprint, I only played it until I was feeling healthy again. A couple of days and I was gone. I came back when Eula came out, and it was then that I explored my favorite region in the game: Dragonspine, but this was the start of my longest sprint with the game: I continued to finish the main quest in Liyue, then the Summer Archipelago came out, then eventually Inazuma came out. When Inazuma came out, I took my second break, and would come back for another sprint when my current favorite character, Kuki Shinobu, was first released. This pattern continued into Sumeru, with Nahida, but fizzled out to the point where even though I enjoyed the first chapter of the Sumeru questline, I'm just not interested in continuing on to the second chapter.
I bring this up because I shared a similar pattern with Genshin as Haedal here, logging on for specific characters, and maybe playing a little bit of the game too. I can't say for sure that my problems with the game stem from the late-game dissatisfaction that a lot of the fan-base has. I was never interested in the Spiral Abyss, I played the game below my highest level so I could enjoy the story without needing max-investment characters, and the only money I ever spent on the game was 1 time when I had been playing enough to max out the battle pass. I played Genshin incredibly casually, and I focused on enjoying the characters, the story, the environment... but it eventually wasn't enough to keep me interested. Now, I appreciate Genshin from afar, and that's about it.
I almost relate with this video even more with another game that I've played for a long time but have recently felt burned out on: Destiny 2. While I always played Genshin alone, I played Destiny frequently with friends who I made while playing the game. Friends that I keep to this day. I'll always have fond memories of playing with them all for days after days, raiding together, doing dungeons together, making bets with each other, helping each other with tough quests and grinds... Like Haedal says: "It's not that I miss the way things were... but I miss the way that this game made me feel." I used to really enjoy the grind, and now I either barely tolerate it with friends, or I don't play at all. That goes for Destiny, that goes for Genshin...
I think we all wanted a game that we could play forever, like a new-age World of Warcraft. Something that would exist beyond us in our shared experiences. Something that we could back on together and relive our memories, and that we would feel happy to play again, if given the chance. But instead, we just got the memories, and the game will have to go on without us.
I'll miss the way Genshin made me feel when I was exploring Dragonspine for the first time, or when I got the 50/50 on Eula with minutes to spare on the Banner, or the time when I gave the Weapon Banner a try and I got Nahida's signature weapon, having just gotten Nahida minutes prior.
I'll miss the way Destiny made me feel when I had my friends rallying around me in support of my attempts on the hardest of challenges the game had to give. When I solo'd raids and dungeons, when I helped teach them to others, when I met friend after friend, the late-nights, the joke-filled days.
If you've been reading to this point, thank you for listening to my story, and I hope we can look back on the time we spent on games like these with smiles on our faces, no matter if we enjoy the game anymore or not. We'll always have the memories of those early days. The memories of how these games used to make us feel.

One of the issue I have with lots of modern days is the abuse of the FOMO. I absolutely freaking hate how they abuse of that to make you keep playing. I quit Genshin, didn't bother with ToF, couldn't even look at Lost Ark, and for a stupid reason I jumped onto HSR... but with a more casual mindset. Hoyoverse also has the issue that you can't skip their cutscenes, like, ALL QUESTS are stuck behind bland, stiff and long ass talk that I don't have the time for. I hate that the game is forcing you to take so many minutes just to smash repeatedly one button/key to skip asap because you can't actually do a full skip.
Tbh the only game I keep coming back to, where the devs themselves tell people to back off from time to time just to take a break of the game and without using the FOMO formula, is FFXIV. Hell, their trial game is so damn long it takes months to complete without paying a cent. It's far from being perfect and I do take lots of breaks but at least whenever there's new content, I don't need to fear that I'm gonna miss out if I wait a week, two, or three months.
Aside from that one, I'll stick to offline games without planned events. One time buy and done with it.

I feel like characters are wasted and some have not gotten updates to their lore lore years, look at venti for example, he is an archon and he hasnt gotten any aknowledgement since the 1.x updates.
After 3 years I feel like we weren't heard, despite surveys, and I was a dumbass and thought, "maybe its taking them too much time" and then I saw our feedback, our months of complains on star rail, it hurts so much being treated like trash tbh.
It all came to a head last month (September) when I fell in love with final fantasy 14, and that kinda sealed the deal
I spent 3 years on this game, and I feel I have many regrets, for one part this game gave me so many happy moments, but it gave me so much sadness, bc I hoped for something that will never come, and I decided to accept it, I would've loved to come to that conclusion sooner

Frustration is the sole thing it makes me feel, and I admit that while I haven't played many gacha games, it's the first one to actually frustrate me with its gacha system. I don't want to spend money on it specifically because of that, and I can't even imagine still being there in one year. I haven't even touched it since I got Eula. Though at worst, I probably will go back to it for Fontaine for a while, but I don't know how long I'll be willing to continue playing it. And it's a shame, because I do love many characters. Fundamentally it's more or less about what your goals are for the game. The issue I see is that as much as some people hate to admit they play mostly for the gambling aspect.
But that in itself just introduces a self inflicted grind the reality is that new End Game doesn't mean much its just a Vertical treadmill to justify grinding Artifacts
Getting more and more characters doesn't add complexity or value it's buying a new toy once you've barely touched the old one
I see a lot of people say they "Love the combat" But 75% of those people regurgitate the same crap CC and people on reddit say no attempt at diversifying or looking into the games complexity
But that's only combat and maybe that's not what draws you into the game. For me at least I set my own goals I lm not going to wait for Hoyoverse to make some MMO style wall so I can spend months or years making bigger number's
I set small goal for myself. A DPS Sayu how does she work? She's squish should I bring a shield? Swirling generates Health should I use VV or focus Anemo Damage
If it's exploration I revist places I don't usually go so many amazing places we never revisit and I sometimes collect material there
Maybe the game is just done for you no game will stays fresh forever and maybe moving on is for the best

My goal in Genshin is the outmust basic: play with the characters I like, even if the teams are sub-optimal in consequence. Spiral Abyss aside (whose rewards are ridiculous compared to the expected investment anyway), the game is too easy to bother investing in the gameplay in any shape or form, hence why I don't mind using my fates on characters like Eula. Though, of course if you have fun focusing on the combat, you do you.

My issue with genshin is more of the obligation of logging on everyday. At first, in my honeymoon phase, I loved logging in because I could play for hours and hours, but then my bad habits kicked in and I started spending hours everyday exploring the areas until 100%ing them all, as I have a completionist spirit and wanted to see that beautiful golden 100% everywhere on the map (and for that I take accountability- that’s my fault if I have that obsession). Now, this is bad because now I do not have anything else to do. But while with other games, if I finish the content I can just… stop playing and go play something else, with Genshin I still need to log on every day for a bunch of boring, menial tasks. I’m not even talking about artifact grinding, I don’t play the abyss except sometimes when I’m just particularly bored. It’s daily commission, refreshing the teapot, trying to reach the max level in the battle pass; since 3.6 I have never gotten past level 30 anymore because I just don’t care enough to do all the stuff to advance it, cause it’s all stuff I’ve done a million times before. Events are nice, but they present another issue, they give me more FOMO than banners. Most important events have story significance and I love genshin’s lore, but I can’t enjoy the story because it’s either presented in a slow, boring way because Paimon infodumps everything (this is something that happens in all story content in Genshin, don’t get me wrong, but in events this just shines even more). And if you miss an event, that sucks, I guess you won’t know about this piece of lore then! I wasn’t playing in 1.2 and was in hiatus during 2.3 which meant I missed Albedo-centric events despite the fact that he’s my favourite character, and I also missed his BiS weapon because OF COURSE I DID.
If I could just have the strength to actually go in hiatus for a few months I’m sure it would help me feel magic towards Genshin again. I played from 1.6 to 2.2 initially, only to drop it at 2.3 because I felt burned out, then came back in 3.0, and although I felt burned out again after 3.5 (the Dehya situation definitely didn’t help) I kept playing until now at 3.8. I wish I had the strength to go hiatus again.

I always tell my friends (who are still pretty new to the game) that early game genshin is like a completely different game than late game genshin. When I started playing the game I had a blast, and that kept going even until Inazuma. I think the game is more fun when your characters are still weak, because domains story quest etc. feel more rewarding. The burnout for me started in Inazuma i think when the chasm released, because at that point my fav characters were built and new content was just scanning the map for puzzles and chests to get the exploration percantage to 100. Combat became a joke and it got worse when sumeru released along with the dendro bs. I made a hyperbloom team with ayato shinobu and nahida and I was shocked how broken this dmg was. That being said there was a really long time where I basically froze the game and did only my comissions and the events, not even using my resin. Had the advantage that i accumulated about 18 million mora so now the leveling is way more pleasant. Sadly Sumeru was for me disappointing, besides the amazing archon quest the region itself was super boring for me and the way to long world quests took a toll on my impatient adhd ass, when i completed on of the aranara quests i remember leaving my pc super pissed and I couldnt even tell why. I think that was the first time I realized how burned out I was from the game. Funnily enough, that is why I made all my other non sumero regions (except enkanomiya, fuck that shit) to 100% exploration.
In a nutshell the magic of genshin goes away as soon as you have your first working late game teams, after that the daily gameplay sadly consists only about getting def-infested artifacts.
This is why I love the games events, and fontaine is making me super excited because the region is like no other for me, it has this modern vibe that the others dont have and I hope the devs wont disappoint me this time.

When I started the game, I fell in love the world, the story, characters, its exploration and the combat system designed around elemental reactions. One year passed, Inazuma came and I was still having fun, with one new region to explore. Then, in Feb 2022, Elden ring came and being the souls fan I am, I played that, but when I returned to Genshin, I felt that I didn't really care about it anymore. This was quite surprising because it was around the time Yae Miko's banner had come out, a character who I had wanted(and still got) ever since the trailer for Inazuma dropped. At that time, the 'explore Enkanomiya' event was running and I completely skipped it. Then Sumeru came, and while I did play the story quest, I had little to no understanding of how dendro or its reactions worked, until I got Nahida(on her rerun banner).

A lot of players are treating the game like a job where they NEED to do certain stuff religiously which weights on them eventually and that's not the game's fault.
As a casual player (who paused the game to write this comment), I always raise an eyebrow at some of the criticism Genshin receives. Sometimes it's more about your mindset while handling the product than the quality of the product itself.

@hachikuji_mayoi That's not the full picture. Most games allow you to replay the story over and over again. Genshin doesn't.
Most Gacha games require you to get new characters so that you can use them in the game's content. And while genshin has constantly updating content. Rarely does it relate to the character you just wished for. It doesn't matter how good the Hydro Archon is if you're using her to play windtrace.
Most games have depth to them which allows players to express themselves in game or devote time to experiencing the mechanics that the game has to offer. Genshin has no such thing.
Genshin ultimately is a collectathon at base with average exploration in it. And that was going to get stale much faster than any other type of game.

Maybe the game will change in the future to have a wider and more advanced form of multiverse and we will be proud to have gotten the characters we had with so much work but for now, it seems monotony and repetition seems to be the norm.

You can decorate your Serinetea Pot, upcoming events, quests, play Genuis Invocation TCG, level up the statues and tree in Dragonspine. I started playing shortly after release and I think the worst mistake a new player can do is to play the game intensely. I made that mistake too and when I ran into the end of content, it came with a bang. Suddenly there was "nothing to do" in the game, and it lasted for what felt like very long time until Dragonspine expansion came. I learned to take things slow and enjoy everything the game offers and I believe that's why I still find it fun, no matter how repetitive the tasks may seem. Comparing it with my experience from other RPGs I played before, I find Genshin better because there are things that are actually new coming regularly, and six weeks cycle is much faster than many months it took the other games to come with any updates. But that's just my experience and to be honest I am not very knowledgeable about current games as I only have time to play one game at a time.

For me personally, I've only played about a month or so. It's a good game, solid mechanics, ect.. but the way content and character progression is locked behind monotones story quests (you can't skip) is just obnoxious. I remember trying to collect the last few shards of light in the Chasm, only to find out that they were locked behind a completely unrelated story quest that took another 10 hours to complete.
Don't get me wrong, the quest turned out to be really interesting.. but to have an open world then lock things away like that is just annoying. Further, due to the requirement of "story keys". You can't just unlock the characters you want, you have to unlock them AND COMPLETE THEM in a specific order. Which again, would be fine.. if not for the fact it takes 2 days to unlock a single questline.
The quest I needed above, required 5 keys to get to the point in the story I could collect those last 3x shards of light. That's 10x days of waiting, all because I didn't know I needed those stories unlocked so I wasn't spending the keys on those stories specifically.
As of this point, beyond logging in to collect my 90 "free" gems for the day (of which I have another 38 days of those left) and collecting/spending realm currency in the teapot.. I've pretty much stopped playing.
That said, I would recommend checking out fontane if you do get a chance. The swimming mechanics/puzzles can be a lot of fun. It's also the closest thing you'll get to flying in the game. lol

I think what made it possible to stick with the game is that I just play it for fun and to relax. The grinding part was never a priority. I think when you remove that “pressure” to have the best of everything it becomes more enjoyable. But hey, that’s just how I play.

  • @inteo_
    @inteo_ Год назад +12

Yeah, I can relate a lot. I started a few weeks after the game released and I've only ever gone hiatus once, however I just don't feel like doing quests anymore. I just log on, do commissions and use resin, which I guess makes the game feel even more boring. I've tried to force myself to do the current summer quest, because I didn't want to miss out on the skin and rewards, but I just end up turning the game volume down and doing something else in the background.
I've heard people say that the people who don't enjoy Genshin are the same people who skip through quests, and while that may be true, there's a reason why I ignore the dialogue in the quest anyway. Like you said, Hoyoverse has repeated the same formula in Genshin for EVERYTHING. They have reused the formula of: Meet the event banner character -> Talk to banner character for 10 minutes -> Paimon summarizes the entire dialogue -> find out there is a problem that only the traveler can solve -> Traveler solves it.
I feel like my friends quitting the game have also contributed to my burnout. Not being able to experience the game with friends has probably made it more boring. I get this sad feeling whenever I check my friends list, and see "has been offline 31 days ago".
Not to mention Honkai Starrail exists which actually feels fun to play and not a chore. (I hope I don't experience the same burnout for this game in the future) All these factors have basically diminished my interest in Genshin.
This is probably a rant that no one will read but I just wanted to express my thoughts. Time to go use my resin I guess.

I agree with pretty much most of what you said. What got me hooked at first was the beautiful world, the amazing music, fun combat and interesting story. This game even had me in tears on some parts, like during Zhongli's story with Azhdaha, and Ruu's quest on Tsurumi Island (actually had tears flowing down this grown man's face). I semi-whaled on this game because I loved it that much, but I regret it in the end. The leveling up is what frustrated me the most. Leveling up your characters took way too long, and WAY too many resources. Further more, the pay off wasn't even worth it. Congratulations, you spent 5 million Mora to level up your character's attack by 0.1%. The final blow to me was leveling up artifacts. You would spend days and thousands of resin to get the artifact with the main stat that you want, only to for you to roll HP and Defense on all of your sub stats. There is no reason for leveling up to be based on sheer luck. The only reason they, and most other gacha games do this is to artificially extend your playtime without having to put the effort to create new content. I just remember saying "this is stupid, I'm done." I quit playing right when Chasm was coming out, but I haven't touched the game sense.
A coworker of mine kept bugging me to play FF14, and when I stopped liking Genshin, I decided to give it a shot. My only regret with that is I didn't start playing sooner. I had no idea what I was missing out on, and the thought of playing an MMO turned me away. I can't believe I was so closed minded on FF14 just because it was an MMO. 90% of the game can be done solo, but that's really closer to 95% now. I've been in love with FF14 for almost 2 years now (started playing when Endwalker came out) and it's been a great ride. I doubt I'll ever come back to Genshin Impact, not unless they do real changes. Wishes are too expensive, so there should be more ways to get Primogems so you don't have to break the wallet every banner. The artifact strongbox is a waste because you can't control the primary stat or substats. There should be away to guarantee you to get the stat you want, even if it's super grindy. Leveling up your character shouldn't be so painful, and the payoff for doing so should be huge, not just an negligible buff in stats. There should be more end game content, not just the Abyss. For all of the good the game does, like the presentation, music, stylization, and characters, these downsides are deal breakers. I do miss this game, and truth be told, I never uninstalled it. Sometimes I want to start it up, but then I just think of all the better things I could be doing with my time, like typing an autobiography in a RUclips comment on a video about a game I haven't played in years.

Fellow endgame player here, experienced nearly the same thing everyone has been talking about in the comments here. Had a wonderful time playing this game, have been here since the first freaking Klee banner. I think I took a hiatus at some point, but it was definitely short because I remember grinding this game quite heavily after I got bored of Animal Crossing. It was magical. The world building was truly something I had never experienced before, and the elemental reaction system was so fresh and fun to use. Then, like everyone else, I took a dip. I just stopped caring for multiple reasons (I started playing other more fun games, school was picking up the pace, and I wanted to spend more time irl with friends). I had known it had reached a pretty bad point when I didn't even finish the second Golden Apple Archipelago, one of my favorite quests.
Up until that point, I was grinding like never before to get a character I had missed a few years back, Kazuha. Once I got him, I felt satisfied. The game was much more fun, for about a few weeks. I dropped it for several months, and have only come back for Wanderer. While I feel I will be playing for a bit longer than the Kazuha period, I will likely take another hiatus.

Genshin nowadays just feels unnecessarily clunky, especially when star rail became a thing.
The snappiness of star rail makes every clunk in genshin an eyesore and it ticks me off every time I get annoyed by the most mundane thing I have to do in genshin. Literally every complaint genshin had they optimised it in star rail and let genshin rot in its own base because it’s a cash cow regardless of how dated it’s starting to feel.
People keep bringing up the open world vs turn based argument but every optimisation done in star rail has nothing to do with game type nor scale.
You don’t have to wait 5s to open up the party screen, every teleporter heals you the moment you get there and you don’t have to stay ABSOLUTELY STILL for 5s for the heal to happen, you can choose the daily quests you want to do and not having the balloon escort shoved deep down into your throat, etc etc.
And from 3.0 genshin became more linear to the extent that half of the “open” world are locked behind quests intertwined with other quests, when I saw a dendroculus on the minimap and realised it’s blocked behind a rock that requires me to finish off a quest that I cannot start cuz the NPC is occupied by another quest it was over for me, it annoyed me off the game and I never came back.

man….. i felt this in my SOUL. i remember when i started playing like it was yesterday - it was sometime during the first run of the gaa, just before inazuma’s release. i would hop on every day, so eager to go through the story and explore the regions. i can even vividly recall pulling for kazuha, my first five star! now, it’s a miracle if i manage to play after a few months. it was definitely the monotony that did it for me - the frustrating grind for materials, the bland fetch quests and commissions, the repetitive slog that is the spiral abyss (and don’t worry, i’ve barely touched the card game, too.). after sumeru and nahida’s releases, i gradually lost interest in the game. it felt more like a chore to log in than it should be, which was when i knew i was burnt out. i don’t even keep track of what patch the game’s on or what banners are running - i’ve pretty much fallen out of love. and while i do still deeply treasure the time i spent in genshin, the honeymoon phase is over. i don’t think i’ll ever enjoy it as much as i used to. we’ve got a few years to go before the final region comes out, so i hope hyv fixes at least some of the game’s issues before then. it wouldn’t be enough for me to stay, but as an old player who’s only following genshin’s development for the story right now, it’d be nice to see! I’ve played since like 1.5 and I took a break after losing so many 50/50s because I had gotten so annoyed. Then Sumeru came out and I got back into the game and loved exploring the rainforest. There were things I wanted to do / level up characters, but I had to progress the archon story. Having to catch up on that felt like a genuine chore because of the “this character is involved in another quest” so I’d have to go and do that one to progress. The story was so boring and took way too long to complete, but I eventually did it because I needed to unlock the bosses to build my characters.
But basically now that Fontaine is coming out, I want to be super excited for the new area, but knowing that I have days worth of story content I’ll need to beat in order to actually enjoy the area genuinely stresses me out. I played with my bestest of friends back then, I made the new account just when she’d started and we had the same type of experience, I ended up competing to see who could get the higher AR - ultimately I won.
She was a Yanfei main and I maimed Anemo Lumine (still my preferred Lumine) and I kept actively trying to understand how the game, elements and artefacts worked, which put me in-front of her and got me to help her a lot of the time, odd since she was the one who actually watched genshin content at the time.
First time I pulled, I got Noelle, then Ningguang, I still love Ningguang to this day just like back then, and my first 5 star was Mona, I was so excited to tell my best friend - she’s kind of a Mona simp now lol - and I remember dragging Mona around everywhere with my impractical team of Anemo Lumine, Ningguang, Diona and Mona
We’d keep racing, I got Mona c1 on standard banner and got Ayaya, who I built and now cherish greatly, she got Venti (I was very jealous lmao, but he came in clutch for her bc we would struggle with the ascension domains and she said she really needed a crowd control support)
We used to go to each others teapots super duper often, at like 1AM, both not wanting to wake our families up, we’d just text via the genshin system, and I remember showing her around the festival area I made and the floating islands with the teapot money we get as compensation for the teapots closing for a while. (I also showed off the Raiden plushie I got that she couldn’t bc she was stuck with the Archon quest at the time which I beat solely for the plushie hehe)
When she was about to build Kuki, her device crashed and that account was lost, but she eventually made a new one, and we still play together sometimes but it doesn’t feel the same anymore.
I’m glad that I knew back then that these moments would eventually pass, and I’m glad I enjoyed them as much as I did back then.
Genshin gave so many of us only the best gaming experiences, huh.

I started playing at around 1.4-1.5. The first time experience was amazing and I played daily. The story was so engaging too but as time went on it started to become stagnant and I got more and more burntout. Recently, I became more busy with college so I stopped playing, it was already exhausting at that point and it was just adding more stress instead of helping. I have no regrets and I lost any FOMO. I did return for a bit but only for Kaeya's new outfit. I'll play it at my own pace but for now it just isn't feasible and until they have a story that I am interested in and want to immerse myself in or until Dainsleif is announced then I won't really come back lol

Genshin is one of the three games I play and i joined in 2020. I joined genshin not because of the trend but because I liked open world games. I never got bored of it or burnt out. I only missed a few days because I was sick or busy. I just do some dailies and farming and finish in 20 mins. I think if you're bored of the game, its not for you. Don't play a game you don't like just because it's popular.

"Don't play a game you don't like." How to know that I will dislike the grinding system and the events of Genshin if I have not played once. In fact, I started since launch because it is a beautiful open world, not because it is popular, I continued playing for almost a year but I quit because the game was boring and repetitive and the community is toxic.

Just because you get burned out on a game you used to like doesn’t mean the game isn’t for you, it’s completely normal for a person to get burned out on games. I get burned out on Deep Rock Galactic, Darktide or Insurgency from time to time but I hop in and have a damn good time. Those games will probably get boring for me one day for one reason or another but I enjoy them until then.

imagine calling genshin open world. an open world doesn't have borders to limit you, and has the whole map unlocked the moment you step in. it's vast indeed, not open.

hey, this video really hit home for me. i made so many friends through this game, grew my art account, and had so much fun on it during my online classes, and it distracted me from the more depressing elements of my life. now, i just cant get back into it, ive stopped talking to those friends as often since we just have different interests now, and ive lost a lot of interactions and followers on my page because i dont draw it anymore. this video made me feel a lot better about everything, knowing that im not the only one with these feelings and gripes about the game. also youre funny as hell man, here's a sub - hope to see you grow on here!

10:00 there are some in development. biggest being Wuthering waves. Genshin really needs a decent competitor. To be fair they recently mentioned wanting to implement some feature from Star rail into genshin. They mentioned the event archive and hinted at something like the simualte universe to come to genshin. Simulate universe = a rouge lite mode in HSR (Star rail)

Hinted at SU coming to Genshin? Ohoho, I'll believe it when I see it. Otherwise, they aren't doing jack shit as far as I can see. They want to stay in their comfort development zone. They want to cater this game to the non-gamers who don't want to figure out how stuff works, Waifu/Husbando simps, and gay/lesbian shippers. After all of this, they seal their ears with wax hoping the complaints of the actual gamers who are demanding actual gameplay will eventually go away.
Genshin isn't really a combat game. It's sort of a visual novel, with a side of exploration. The combat barely exists. It is there to make the exploration more meaningful and to justify their Gacha's existence.

There was an event back in 2.2 called Labyrinth Warriors, which is basically the SU equivalent of Genshin. That was one event that they would probably not bring back since it involved playable characters (Xinyan & Childe) and was voiced.
And so far voiced events won't come back except for GAA. It came back in 2.8 but somehow not on 3.8

I don't believe that WW will be able to make a good competitor to genshin. They will have to really make a divine game, and they have to spend millions on advertising. But genshin will soon also have anime from ufotable, which will bring even more players to genshin, and from this ww can bend into obscurity on the wave of genshin's hype. Although ww will most likely definitely be more popular than tof.

@@iosis9324 Wuwa has a $100m budget, the same as Genshin had. Mihoyo are only spending about a tenth of Genshin's income on the game itself every year so Kuro have a pretty good chance at matching its content output and marketing, especially since they'll probably put a bigger emphasis on combat for things like events. A good thing for them to do (unlike ToF) would be *not* launching the month before Genshin's most hyped patch of the year. If Kuro put it out right before Natlan comes out, they're shooting themselves in the foot.
