  • D-Day Anniversary LIVE: France Honours Veteran WWII Soldiers Who Fought Against Nazi Germany
Former members of the military as well as current and former public officials are expected to jump out of C-47 transport planes to mark D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations. A group of American veterans are expected to attend ahead of it. Reports state that this year might mark the last time D-Day is celebrated with the World War II's veteran soldiers.
In the year 1944, the West decided to fight Hitler and take back the French land of Normandy from Nazi Germany. Soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, Belgium, Norway, Poland, Luxembourg, Greece, Czechoslovakia, New Zealand and Australia, started the naval mission. An allied invasion of Normandy, this operation contributed to the subsequent defeat of Hitler and Nazi Germany. Watch Firstpost's live coverage to know more.

PS They fought and died so my life could be peaceful, I was born December 1944. I did have older friends who were there.

Our familial WWII veteran died in 2011, He was my father in law, and was shot down in a B24 over Poland, and not only one of the few lucky ones to get out, but also one of the very early ones. He came down a chute just like these, and broke his ankle on the landing, in German held territory. They didn't have the luxury of landing in prepared fields, especially when he held it until all of his crew bailed, and then went last, although that one fella here looks like he might have gotten a bit of a rough ride, hopefully he was fine. A lot of them back then ended up in trees, and were sometimes shot still hanging there.
He credits the Polish partisans 100% with his escape, and said they were steadfastly committed and truly heroic, some of them coming very close to losing their lives on more than one occasion, one literally within about three feet, when he was buried in a hay stack and the Germans were pitchforking it to make sure it was empty. Luckily he had taken the time to get to the very center of the stack, and the tines came just shy of reaching him. Hail to the heroes who were not so lucky, as well as those who were.
I was a little hacked at the French govt WRT Ukraine early in that invasion, but that has OH SO disappeared. Macron seems to have gotten religion, so to speak, and it is marvelous to see. Hopefully he will encourage our politicians to grow some balls. We should have been providing all the weapons we are now, and the OK to use them over Russian soil, with caveats, and a few others, like a few Tomahawks to take out the Kerch and keep it out early on. So many fewer Ukrainians would have died, and they would be so much closer to victory than they are now if we had.
I remember when the last dough boy died, and it won't be too long before we lose our last WWII veteran, they are really getting up there in age, and many of them, including my father in law, falsified their records to enter before 18.
