  • I Watched @WaqasQazi ( The man, the legend ) Master class and It wasn't as good as it has to be. Don't get me wrong, I learned everything from his RUclips channel and I owe him a lot in that regard, but when it was all about masterclass , it could be much better.
The whole masterclass, which I believe it's more of a complete tutorial, rather than a masterclass is fantastic, but as I said it's not a masterclass by all means. He explains things the way he explained them already in his RUclips channel and for an intermediate/semi-pro colorist, 1000$ for such a class is too much.

If you're interested mostly in actual color grading the majority of it is done in look creation. So when looking for a masterclass that term is probably what you are looking for. Also people should know that the better the people that supply you the content, the more impressive the grades will be. Colorist is just a small credit when you see the hundreds of people scrolling by you at the end of a film. Most of which are rockstars in their fields.

Qazi is a classic "street-smart" guy, who (probably) worked hard to acquire some of the trade skills and people skills. HOWEVER, his pedagogy skills are zero, even lower than that. The jargon, "parking it here", "guys, this is the sauce" and all the other crap without any real method to his madness makes those lessons unusable. Watch even ONE video by Cullen Kelly and there is a man who teaches you how to fish, and not just giving you the proverbial fish. For anyone really, I mean REALLY interested in becoming a pro in any trade, one should focus on learning the WHY, not the HOW. Why am I changing this part of the image? SHOULD I be changing it at all? How much should it be changed?
Cullen really has exactly this beautiful approach and builds upon solid foundations. Dado Valentic knows his stuff (but he is really, REALLY up there, so you need to do your prep work), Alexis Van Hurkman is another one, Darren Mostyn has great teaching skills as well... Lowepost is a good community to be a part of, ACES Central, Mixinglight is TERRIFIC!
    Qazi is a joke.

In classical music, a masterclass is usually a master giving live feedback to students. That WOULD be interesting from colorists. It'd also be interesting to see how a pro colorist would handle amateur footage. (I know the short answer is that they wouldn't. 😅 But it'd be helpful for newbs like me to see how one might go about maximizing suboptimal footage.)

I agree with you that every "masterclass" out there has somehow failed to deliver much more than what's available on RUclips. However, in the case of color grading I know there are a ton of techniques and information in this space that does not exist on RUclips. It's often in the hands of professional colorists who don't want to share their tricks, and academics. So at the end of the day, you have to source that stuff from technical blogs, papers, and networking with colorists. Networking, not because the material requires individual mentorship, but because those people are only willing to share with their friends.

This was what I expected from your masterclass, but it was a nice tutorial for beginners .

My style is based on real-world practices I will never be the user manual reading instructor and again it's ok if that's not how one learns.
I purposely keep my masterclass content out of my RUclips channel. It is not the same.
Plus, the biggest benefit to my masterclass is getting access to a mentor. I can't tell you how many times in my life I would've paid 100,000s of dollars to learn from other's experience than my own. Lost clients by inexperience mistakes costs way more long term than the small price you pay.
All that being said, my next course will be an Over-the-Shoulder experience. It's going to be unlike anything people have seen especially in the post-production world.

Color gradring is an art by itself, and masters don't teach the tools, but are able to pass on something more that will allow you to make the best out of the tools. The tools are numerous and always evolving. RUclips+lot of practice get most people to a descent level. I actually noticed I benefit more from these classes when I already experimented myself. They just give the words and a structure to what I already figured out.

So many people are trying to cash in on digital products... but while some people are very talented... they are not capable of training or teaching. I have watched several of his videos and I find that he uses terms that do not relate to dials or settings... they are vague and open to interpretation. For a while he had this white dude doing some of the tutorials and man he was so much better at explaining what he was thinking and teaching how to apply that to the settings.

I used to watch his videos, NGL, learned a few things from him. Was thinking of considering his masterclass as well...But one fine day, I had a look at his insta page and saw this written in his bio... "businessman first, colorist second". Then and there I was like NAH! Not happening. Don't know why but I got such a bad/weird feeling about him as a "colorist" after reading that! That little description was like a deal breaker for me. I wasn't able to trust him the way I used to anymore. Imagine you go to a doctor for treatment and on his door you see this written "businessman first, doctor second"... would you go inside? I wouldn't. PERIOD.

Sorry to hear that he fooled you. I knew ahead of time that his class would not be great . Also color grading is so subjective. I’ve seen him do things where halfway through it’s great and then he makes it worse and worse and worse. But color grading really is your opinion of what looks good. it should be an educated opinion but still… There are no hard facts on how warm or how cold a shot should be.
Watching people like Darren Mostyn and Cullen Kelly Will get you much further.
And also, color grading is like being a musician… Some people can play an instrument just OK and other people can play an instrument magnificently. Something you have to be born with.

Classes from online sources are meant for beginners. They’re trying to reach everyone possible.
You reach a point in a skill where the only way to get questions you actually have answered you need to make mistakes, practices, do your own experimenting, and assisting/interning.
In photo work I tried all the classes, but none of them answered the very specific questions I had. You have to find those on your own in many cases. It’s crappy but it’s true.

So I do agree with some of the things you said in this video. Especially the suggestion you made about him doing walkthroughs of him actually grading client work and talking us through his thought process and why he does whatever he does. At this stage I would really enjoy that. I do also have to say that the weekly color grading challenges in the Facebook group (that you participate in after the course) do offer this via his critiques and feedback. They can be immensely helpful in refining your skills for real world experiences. Also masterclasses can exist for different skill levels. There can be (and are) masterclasses for beginners, intermediates, and advanced pros. It’s interesting that you went into it with the expectations that you did. Everything about how he markets his teachings and the course in the webinars, marketing videos, and descriptions on the site is the opposite of what you expected. He literally says that the course will “give you what you need to go from beginner to pro” as a freelancer and from “zero to hero”. And in that regard, I think the course combined with the Facebook group challenges absolutely delivers on that in you’re willing to put in the work. Am I claiming that he’s the best colorist or teacher? No. But IMO, he does provide a product that delivers on what it says it will do.

    • @MDFariasMusic
      @MDFariasMusic Год назад +1

My only complaint about the weekly challenges is that they changed to only a select few being critiqued by Qazi himself. You do get critiques from others on your post but going into it it was kind of like put out there that you’d be getting feedback from him personally but then that changed because the group and amount of submissions got too high. I also feel that for the course that as his techniques change that he would update those parts within the course. I also feel the way the modules are organized could be better.

For example the movie Knives Out, when you look at the actors skin it’s almost like you can see their pores. Is that noise/grain, post sharpness added, or is it the camera be filmed with. If this is done in post how can you achieve it. It’s hard to get someone who’s so big and with so many followers to respond to your questions. And you aren’t the first person who’s said it was disappointing for the price. There’s a whole Reddit page about it.

The masterclass sucks, but the problems you're talking about are totally fixable + using Arri footage doesn't really make things easier. It actually makes things noticably harder because increased DR gives more room for decisions to be made, and possibly making the wrong decision.

I’m a big fan of Qazi and have benefited a lot from his YT videos so it’s hard for me to see so many comments below of people ripping on him. I don’t know him personally at all.

Mentality, his own POV, how he handle a project, showing workflow not the possible ways and ... There are a lot that i can list here you could do but he didn't. Specially avoiding explaining the basics and going through every single explanation, because it says masterclass, not a complete guide or full beginners tutorial

Demand your money back! You paid for a master class and received an advanced beginners class.

I really really like Waqas Qazi but the honest truth is, unless there was NO single davinci resolve TUTORIAL out there, and you happen to be a TOTAL BEGINNER, $1000 is just TOO MUCH for the tutorial.

@@Cyrusyami you learn some stuff only working with pros. And pro colorist fee start from 500$ a day... why he should spend time on RUclips...? I am trying to do my stuff here on RUclips, but I have no time for it... to make a good RUclips video you need time and if you work time is money....

His course is worth what his perpetual discount code is - 500$ and even then it isn't worth it because there is no value ad and the way he tries to hook you into it is very old school internet marketing which died out due to poor conversion rates. The ol - sit in a pre-recorded outdated webinar - forced to sit through it - usually just a rehash of easy already out there information - try to plug his wares to create an urgency etc. He posts constantly, which means he is not that busy as a colorist and most likely makes more money via RUclips than he does with grading at this point and good for him he found his niche but for those trying to make a career out of it - got to do research into better resources if one can. again nothing against him - learned a lot from him but then ventured off as the wealth of information is out there for free.
