If the review is too long to watch in one sitting (let's be honest, it is for most people), there are time stamps in the description! Hopefully those make getting through the full video more comfortable. :)
Retropolis Zone Hahah, thankfully, it is the perfect kind of review for me 'u' Really, i love how much time you spend talking anout those games, it is really entertaining for me, and i hope it is for more people too ^u^
I actually prefer long form reviews. I appreciate the effort you put into all of your work and I've watched the entirety of your "Quickies Don't Cut It" Series. Thank you so much :)
I like in depth reviews like this because i usually watch videos while doing something else, so I re watch these often. The format also allows for detail and I love how you pick out little things. Very well done, subbed.
With these hour and a half long reviews I speculate that in 2021 he will have a 10 hour review on Pong. EDIT: Well, we're in 2021 and im still waiting for that 10 hour vid
Retropolis Zone You will probably say this like: “The graphics are simple and do what they need to do, same with the colour scheme. The simple black background make the white ball and blocks easy to see.”
I know that making videos this long isn't the best way to get popular but I'm really glad there are people like you who make things like this. This was an excellent thorough analysis. Thank you for making it.
This review is straight up fantastic. The amount of depth and detail put into this game, I never realized it until watching your video. RZ time and again your content never fails to catch my attention and I always look forward to more of your content. Please keep up the good work and do not change your style. Regardless of video length we do not see videos of this quality and depth in the community, so I say make videos as long as needed, because when it comes out you better believe that we enjoy it from start to finish. Thank you for time and please keep creating content!
Jak and Daxter is one of my favorite PS2 titles, and I’m glad this review showed all of its strengths and weaknesses with properly structured thoughts and opinions about the game as a whole. Looking back at some of the suggestions made about the stages and their respective gimmicks, I think you nailed how to expand upon them very well. On the final boss fight though, I think what would’ve been more interesting for light eco at the end would be that instead of picking up a cluster of it, the large cluster that the beams form would drop small clusters of the 4 types. You would then have to pick up at least 2 clusters of each color. Also a possible way to explain why Daxter could only get changed back there would be if the eco beams can only be activated by the precursor robot, and the sages themselves don’t have the ability to concentrate their eco channeling abilities enough to form a light eco cluster. (Those are just my thoughts though) Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this in-depth look at Jak and Daxter. Looking forward to the next review whenever that is! 😁👍
Loved the hell out of this game and its sequels when I was in high school and I'm really impressed with what Naughty Dog was able to do so early on in the ps2's life cycle. Definitely need to give this series a replay one of these days. Great critique as always my dude! Honestly not sure how you're able to go into such detail and keep the pace of the video up at the same time. Watched in two chunks and and they both flew by. :D
wow man, I gotta say I am extremely impressed. this is by far one of the best reviews I've ever seen, not a single detail was overlooked and i'm not left feeling like there's much more to be said. you really did a fantastic job picking apart every single aspect of this game in a very fair way. these are the kinds of videos i look to as inspiration in my own content, you absolutely knocked it out of the park here. the wait for this one was definitely worth it. i also noticed you seem to be very familiar with speedruns, i saw you pulling off some of those uppercut spin jumps off the ledges for extra distance and that cheeky reference to bonesaw's famous GDQ run
Thanks for the detailed comment, man! I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! Lately I've really been doubting if this direction is going to work. I feel like I've been pushing the length of these beyond what a lot of people are willing to see through, and it's been making me very uncertain about what to do with my channel going forward. It does me good to know that there are at least some people out there who love the type of content that I gradually gravitate towards making now. I really don't try to make these videos so long, it's naturally what happens now. :(
well for me i'm definitely the type to sit through a 2 hour review all in one sitting (i watched this all at once this morning) just because i find it all really interesting. this kind of in-depth analysis type review is probably my favorite kind of video now, you and exo are some of my favorite youtubers too. i know there are plenty of people who just dont have the time or patience for reviews of this length but in my opinion if thats how long you want to make your videos then by all means you should! while not everyone will, there are plenty of people like me that'll watch and enjoy the whole thing, so don't be too hard on yourself. personally i would strive to make videos this detailed and well structured, as is mine are typically only 15-20 minutes long and i end up feeling i could've said a lot more in retrospect. in that sense, it's better to make a video as long as it needs to be when you can look back on it without any regrets.
just finished, and completely agree with everything you've said. I can't wait for your analysis on Jak 2. Do note that there's a bug in Jak 2 that can prevent you from progressing on the original PS2 release (www.neoseeker.com/forums/4966/t314278-someone-please-help-find-keira/) (which I unfortunately had as a kid and could never finish until beating the HD trilogy years later). in all honesty, jak 2 is kinda buggy in general but it's still a good game, i think it's better than 3. 3 felt rushed. also, the PS3 HD collection is an excellent way to play. I don't recommend the Vita port as it suffers from some bad framerate issues but the PS3 version is great and fixes some of the bugs in Jak 2.
Thanks for the comment and notifying me of the bug! Would be kind of shit not being able to progress, haha. And I will be playing the PS2 version for the review, as I did with Jak 1 here. :)
Thanks for the link, I didn't know about that either. Personally, I tried playing Jak 2 for the PS2 and didn't like it too much. The hub world isn't fun to move around in, the egg-hunt and racing quests there aren't too good, the vehicle controls may work well for large areas but just crash into everything in this game, and the game is bleeding with that edgedark late 2000s era cheese (that last part I don't mind too much, but it does date the game worse than its predecessor). Also, really minor, but I'm confused why you can steal cars in this game whenever you want. I could never bring myself to do so. I'm supposed to be the good guy, and these people are shown not to be bad, rather oppressed. So why would I ever steal their cars?
i also got this bug, was the most devastating thing to realize as a kid that the only option was to start the game all over again, after spending months trying to beat it.
I definitely agree Jak 2 is the inferior game compared to the original but it's also essential and still fairly challenging. also you can steal cars because GTA was big at the time :)
it's the immersive storyline and interesting characters that got me into the game in the first place; the great gameplay is what made this one of my all time favorite games
Its like a full-length documentary about a PS2 platformer! Really appreciate the attention to detail and technical information that went into this review, great job with this one!
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is the best one, IMO. I really enjoyed the collect-a-thon aspect that had a lot of personality. Sequels where they broke with the format were not as fun. I own the HD remaster, which is probably the best version.
One of my beloved games series, this game in particular actually saved my life...long story short, i would go to Sentinel Beach towards the Ruins, there's one structure that has an nook behind it on the ground, i would walk inside there and get cozy, listen to the soft music and gaze upon the stars whilst reflecting. This was a much needed haven for me, and allowed me to find answers i needed while simultaneously putting my soul at ease.
Damn, this is nearly 2 hours. You're mad. Also thank you for this. I remember never getting into this game or collect-a-thons i general but i loved the graphics and voice acting for the first 2 or 3 hours i managed to play before giving up.
@MusicAndKeyboard Great statement to hear from you. I’m glad there are some people out there who are legitimately trying to push through some preconceived notions
That power cell outside of spider cave is genius. I remember having a real hard time with it as a kid, then finally got it and 100% my game for the first time. Then my older brother and little cousin came over, like, 2 hours after this, and my cousin started a new game, of course saving over my 100% save. Good times, good times.
Great, thorough review (as always, naturally) of one of my favorite games of all time. I hope you intend to cover Jak 2 and 3 in the future, though I imagine you won't enjoy them quite as much honestly. As someone who specifically DOES enjoy well-developed stories and characters in his games regardless of their genre, I have enormous love for the writing in the sequels as well as the the fundamentals of their new mechanics, but compared to the original they are whiplash-inducingly inconsistent from moment to moment. They have the same strong fundamentals as the original but choose to barely lean on those fundamentals for some reason, and really suffer for it gameplay-wise. They're not bad by any means but even as a story-lover in games I return to Precursor Legacy the most often for its shear consistency of quality and unabashed platforming emphasis. Also kudos for giving Samos such love in this video - he is a majorly underrated character in general lol and his VA deserves so much goddamn credit for bringing him to life so enjoyably.
I loved the Jak and Daxter series on the PS2. I've been replaying it off and on for years since it came out, and it's affected how I look at video games entirely and has set the bar so high that I can't enjoy a lot of what comes out now. Which sucks, because I'm not sure there's a series or game that's quite like Jak was.
I have played this game for years ever since it came out and still play it constantly and have never seen the trip animation until this video. That is amazing!
I haven't played the game or any games from the Jak and Daxter series, as I've dabbled only a little bit into Playstation exclusives, but I gotta say, this looks like a title I'd really enjoy. The controls alone just seem like a dream come true, and the rest of the game seems to be very enjoyable as a whole. If I ever have the chance, I'll definitely pick this one up! Keep up the good work!
1:13:27 Flock off, featherface, you know it's kinda true! >:( For real though, loved the review and appreciate the game even more now. I always really liked The Precursor Legacy, but didn't think much about it (unlike the sequels, which I constantly thought about) but the review helped me noticing Jak 1 strenghts much more and for that I tip my non-existent hat to you. Looking forward to Sonic BS.
This in-depth look at Jak and Daxter was pretty great to watch. It's one of my favorite games of all time, and you really did it justice by pointing out the smallest details that make it, in my opinion, an amazing platformer, while still recognizing its more underwhelming design decisions.
i liked the red eco, i think the problem was that it was underutilized, if there were more enemies in later levels that took 2 or even 3 hits, it's value would be increased that much more
Fantastic video. They were two things I disagreed with earlier on in the 1/3 half of the video, but I forgot it. (Watched this video over a 3 day period.) Fair amount of criticism is very much appreciated, especially with this particular installment.
24:50 Lmao that was me, I beat the entire game without even knowing Misty Island was a playable stage. Though, it was fun going back and doing so many of the things I missed in the first playthrough, I really liked how you could beat the game any way you wanted.
He should do a 9 Quickie's Don't Cut It review series on the 3 platformer trilogies I most associate with the PS2 which would be Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter
Awesome review, I enjoyed every second of it, but it still felt short to me. Despite the length, there were some things that you still didn't comment on. Particularly, I'm surprised to se no mention at all at the dynamic day and night cycle system and how that affects the visual design of the game. Perhaps that would lead the video to the 2h mark. Awesome effort nonetheless and waiting impatiently for the reviews of the sequels
Thanks a lot, man! I did actually talk about the day and night cycle and the attention to detail in the world, starting from 54:20. Some things were cut, though, particularly a separate discussion about music, and the fact that I find the Power Cells dances to become slightly annoying after a while. I felt I was really pushing length here, so I'm sorry if that bothered you.
You are absolutely right, I totally missed that reference. I guess I expected a little more developement about the topic but, thinking about it, maybe it's no so relevant, since the game does nothing creative with the cycle, it's just for aesthetic purposes and world immersion. Anyway, and as I said, an awesome and really entertaining review!
So I fell asleep early last night (Like at 11 or something) Then I wake up seeing this video uploaded best why to wake up! You did great on this one. Coming from a person who is a big long time fan of Jak and Daxter. I learn a few things, like how you could long jump in the swamp area and make it without help from Flut Flut. Thank you so much! I love when videos can expand my knowledge on a game or anime I love. Looking forward to next video!
Wonderful video thank you for putting so much effort into this game. I love this game and can listen about it for hours and thanks for giving me just that!!
This game needs a full on remaster in the style of Final Fantasy X and XII, and Shadow of the Colossus. I don't think Naughty Dog has it in then to do it themselves and still make it cartoony, but maybe Insomniac or Sucker Punch could figure something out with them to make it happen. This game is BEGGING for a remaster, especially considering how the franchise is merely collecting dust as is right now.
Damn, this scratched an itch I've had for bloody ages! With how much detail and polish was put into this game it's a surprise no one's done a review this in depth before. It's even got a ton of details the average player wouldn't know, heck there was stuff that I didn't know, which was certainly a surprise. If this is the quality I can expect from other reviews I'd definitely have to check them out. (Btw there's a single frame in 1:09:58 that's something I'd recommend people to look at)
The 100% speedrun world record is shorter than this video hahaha. But this is a great video though I love the in depth discussion, agree with most points.
Oh boy can't wait to watch this on my lunch break this is my favorite game series let's see how good you did with your review probably amazing I can already tell
I just wanted to say you can make a save file right after the first cutscene ends as your profile is still at zero percent so you can skip the first cutscene as long as you have watched it once and made a save right after your fine it still does not fix all the other cutscenes.
I know these must take a couple years to complete, but I feel like if you released on a more consistent basis (which again, is pretty unfair to ask of you), people might stick around for these reviews. Personally, I love your review style, and the longer the review, the better it is. Never played Jak and Daxter before, but I think I may give it a go:)
Excellent excellence. Looking forward to you doing the rest of the series, as detailed as you are, I really hope you get into how naughty dog ended up making a great story about a boy becoming a hero, a villain, and a saviour. Although we all know jak 3 was a lot, a lot, of driving, but at least there are some neat little extras and shout outs to prior games and other series if you know where to look. Finally, the script was improved immensely as the series grew, even though the depth of some side characters didn't get much deeper than a puddle, jak and daxter both came a very long way. First words out of jaks mouth in the second, was the best, like oh yeah, I'm ready to kick ass.
you can skip the first cutscene by resetting the console. if anyone want to do so. Edit: Just finished the video, very informative and sports a educated opinion
Kinda wish you could include a "where you can get the game nowdays" segment like before. Was that cut due to already long runtime of the video? Anyway, another great review that got me interested in these games I never played. Your reviews definitely deserve more attention for all the time and effort you clearly put into them. Easily the most detailed and fair game reviews I have seen. Please do not get discouraged by low views and keep doing all sorts of games you love, not just those in demand *cough Mega Man and Sonic cough*.
50:26 Speaking of which, Crash Team Racing did had open areas, and still managed to look waaaay better imo than Spyro trilogy, even 3 which was a year later. It somehow avoided flat shading or fogging at the far distance which plagued most if not all fifth gen games with open areas. Insomniac otherwise was and still is one of the best Sony devs in technical terms, but Naughty Dog was just built different.
I haven't played this game in a long while. I remember liking it a lot. It's a good thing the PS2 game is still pretty cheap on ebay. Can't wait for it to be delivered to my adress. HD collection is surprisingly pricey. I'd like to play Sly games again as well, but I honestly can't wrap my head around the fact that both PS2 and PS3 versions are damn pricey.
Dude, thanks for the closed captions. Now I will understand perfectly the video. Maybe if you enable the viewers making closed captions for your video,I can give ya a brazilian portuguese subtitle.
Looking forward to the 98064389044890553337890257837885479954477 hour video talking about every pixel for an hour nah jk looking forward to watching this
This video was awesome, now where's Jak 2 and 3 (and maybe X/Daxter/The Lost Frontier) Guess I'll watch all those Sonic Vids and the Crash Trilogy in the meantime 🤷♂️
If the review is too long to watch in one sitting (let's be honest, it is for most people), there are time stamps in the description! Hopefully those make getting through the full video more comfortable. :)
Retropolis Zone Yay, you did it man! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

That's OK, Michael. BTW, do you have the collection for the PS3?
With these hour and a half long reviews I speculate that in 2021 he will have a 10 hour review on Pong.

Movies got nothing on Quickies Don't Cut It.
Marius Urucu agreed.
Marius Urucu Except Black Panther
Jak and Daxter is one of my favorite PS2 titles, and I’m glad this review showed all of its strengths and weaknesses with properly structured thoughts and opinions about the game as a whole.

Retropolis:"Jak and Daxter isn't that hard"
Jak2: "Hold my beer...."
I was literally thinking that when writing down that Jak 1 was a bit too easy for my liking, haha. That Jak 2 review is gonna be something...
Looking forward to it :)
the perfect Jak and Daxter review does not exi....
>a whole ass almost 2 hours about one of my favourite childhood games
lemme get uhhhh yes
My favorite level in the game was snowy mountain, especially at night. The music fitted perfectly too
"More unpolished than J's review about this game"
I heard it right? XD
Drago 303 How will J ever recover?
By finding RZ and cutting off his Ethernet
Yup
More unpolished than ,,,,, DEEZ NUTZ ?
Playing this game natively on PC is a literal dream.
I wish all reviews were this in depth, informative and entertaining! Great job.
Loved the hell out of this game and its sequels when I was in high school and I'm really impressed with what Naughty Dog was able to do so early on in the ps2's life cycle. Definitely need to give this series a replay one of these days.

My favorite game forever and always. I think I’ve beaten it about 50 times 100% and will never get sick of it
just finished, and completely agree with everything you've said.

You should do a Jak 2 review
So when are going to do the Jak 2 and 3 review? It's been 3 years 😆😍.
PS4 Remasters
2017: Crash Trilogy
2018: Spyro
2019: Crash Team Racing
2020: Jak and Daxter??? Please!
1:17:25-Ooooooh, now THAT'S a freezer burn.
Glad to know I've done the game justice for a big fan of the series! Thanks for the comment proper. :D
Wonderful video thank you for putting so much effort into this game. I love this game and can listen about it for hours and thanks for giving me just that!!
Awesome review man, are you gonna review Jak II?
Never thought I would live to see a video longer than X7
8 hour ride ahead of me. This video’ll make me sit back and chew up an hour and 45 minutes. Thank you.
-speedrunner of Jak and Daxter
Love these long ass reviews. Thank you for the premium content, boy.
Great video as always.
25:00 You can only go to Misty Island if Batman says you can (Kevin Conroy)
This game needs a full on remaster in the style of Final Fantasy X and XII, and Shadow of the Colossus. I don't think Naughty Dog has it in then to do it themselves and still make it cartoony, but maybe Insomniac or Sucker Punch could figure something out with them to make it happen. This game is BEGGING for a remaster, especially considering how the franchise is merely collecting dust as is right now.
King Koleyolis III That’s what I’d love to see! Maybe add a few more types of Eco and 50-100 more Power Cells to collect, and more Flut Flut stages!
Angel Molina Brighter colors, better character models, some more subtle nods to Jak II and 3, a better secret ending, there's a lot of potential here.
(Btw there's a single frame in 1:09:58 that's something I'd recommend people to look at)
Sorry you don't have more views on this, the time and effort were obviously immense but really I enjoyed watching!
I'd love to see a Jak II if you get the chance, maybe a Jak 3 too but we all know that was a big let down!
I always thought the plot twist was Gol Acheron was Dee Snider the whole time lol
Yeah! He is back!
Sort of. This isn't Sonic or Mega Man, after all. ;)
The 100% speedrun world record is shorter than this video hahaha. But this is a great video though I love the in depth discussion, agree with most points.
Oh boy can't wait to watch this on my lunch break this is my favorite game series let's see how good you did with your review probably amazing I can already tell
I hope you'll like it, man. :D
Love to throw some Retropolis on at 2x speed and think critically about my favorite games!
Just subbed, got a PS2 today, so excited to play this again, thanks for this! 😀
You working on a Jak II review?
Nope, unfortunately. This video performed pretty terribly. It seems there isn't as much interest in Jak and Daxter anymore.
@@RetropolisZone Thats cause its an hour 1 45. Just make a 45 minutes video
Jak 2 please! ☺
Ah I really missed eating my pizza while watching a new review from RZ. Good job as always.
you can skip the first cutscene by resetting the console. if anyone want to do so.
54:34
Thanx 4 the middle finger!!!
:D
Loved every minute of this video. I’m guessing no Jak 2?
Great review. Would love too see you do Jak2!
Dude, thanks for the closed captions. Now I will understand perfectly the video. Maybe if you enable the viewers making closed captions for your video,I can give ya a brazilian portuguese subtitle.
Nice to see the closed captions actually benefit people! It's no problem adding them, man. I'd have to check out about viewers making translations. :)
Retropolis Zone Actually,I don't really know if I will have patience enough to do this...like...almost two hours...but I'll try.
Hehe yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. You don't have to do it for me, but I thank you for the consideration regardless. :)
I had no clue you could blow up the pelican, I'm in stitches
Damn bro love this analysis.
25:00 by a kid you mean Darksydephil, right?
Will we be getting the rest of the jak series soon? Also, will you cover Ratchet and Clank, and if so all of it or just the ps2 titles?
If jak 1 is this long I’m kind of terrified to see how long jak 2 and 3 will be
Shorter. This video was too long for its own good.
54:34 I'm not sure if you purposefully flipped us all off.
Oh I'm sure it was completely intentional and it put a smile on my face.
really curious about your opinions on Jak 2 now
8:33 Did you say “This is egg-cellent” because you were talking about Precursor Orbs and they’re shaped like eggs? Clever.
I've always felt the Jak & Daxter series was more narratively focused than gameplay focused- not that the gameplay lacked for it.
Dude you're awesome.
Shots fired at J.
Another great review
Ok I didn't know you could kill the Pelican
Do jack 2 and 3!
If you hate the hand holding in this game, I hope you do Skyward Sword one day. Should be a great rant. 🍿
Looking forward to the 98064389044890553337890257837885479954477 hour video talking about every pixel for an hour nah jk looking forward to watching this
Fucking amazin video. I love this game so much and i really love Quickies Don't Cut It. Please don't kill the series. ;-;
This video was awesome, now where's Jak 2 and 3 (and maybe X/Daxter/The Lost Frontier)
Guess I'll watch all those Sonic Vids and the Crash Trilogy in the meantime 🤷♂️
Woah, I never knew you could blow up the pelican lol
I plan on getting the ps4 ports but i heard there glitchy is that true
I don't have experience with the PS4 ports. From what I've heard the sequels have some issues but not Jak 1.
why is the review longer than the game itself
ikr, the game is only 24 minutes long
Hey not everyone is a gdq speed runner lol
So is sonic CD cancelled?
No, it's the next video.
I recommend you give a chance for Crash TwinSanity,is for far the best Crash game ever made.
Retropolis Zone Got it. Thanks!
How can I play this game Since I don’t have a PS2?
3:03 “Alzaymers” at least it isn’t advengure
Jak 2?
