    An X2 remake... *daydreams*
    What I would give

      As much as I love the PSP, especially since I still have a working one and I still play games on it even now... it is a shame that Maverick Hunter X was a PSP exclusive. I think if they had made it for the PS3 or even PS4 (I know it wasn’t out at the time) instead there might have been more of an audience for the remake, and we would have seen an X2-6 remake series. Can you imagine a GOOD version of X6.... that would have been an amazing way to fix that mistake of a game.

    This is an excellent, very well-made, super in-depth review, but I do have to point out: I truly believe that your issues with things like graphics and level designs do have a lot to do with *when* you played the game, as objective as you're trying to be. In 1994, they blew my mind, and I've never had a problem with them or felt they could have been wildly better or anything like that. Of course, it's not a perfect game -- though I'd say, for me, it's one of the closest-to-perfect games out there, and I've replayed it about once a year on average for over two decades now, so I'd think if there were real issues I'd be able to find them in more recent playthroughs with more critical eyes. Of course, I don't feel quite the same way about any of the later entries, basically less as the series goes on, so I'm interested in seeing your takes on all those.

      Thanks man! I hope you didn't misunderstand the review because I think Mega Man X is a great game. The graphics and level design are more personal preferences and I think I stated that in the video. They are very well-made, I just find them a bit underwhelming, but that's again, just a subjective matter.
      The one glaring, more serious problem I see in this game is the Mavericks. Many of them seem to be designed around the use of the dash, which you don't have from the start. Launch Octopus is a nice example of a boss where you are clearly handicapped without the dash because of his attacks that suck you in. Armored Armadillo is also a big offender because you need the Electric Spark to remove his shield and he does a fuck ton of damage to you. I guess what I am trying to say that about half of the eight main levels aren't viable options for a newcomer to take on first. What cements for me that this was an issue is that the dash was made a default power-up from X2 and onwards whereas the rest wasn't, and X2 has its bosses overall more balanced around a vanilla X with no weapons and upgrades.
      I feel this was possibly a flaw carried over from Classic Mega Man, which from what I recall (it's been two years since I've played any of them seriously so excuse me if I'm off the mark here), has this problem to a much bigger degree. By X2, most of the X games seem to have smoothed over this quirk and X1 kinda feels like it's a stepping stone to that end goal; it addressed the boss issue but didn't entirely fix it yet. That's what I think, anyway. :)

      Armored Armadillo isn't that hard without the dash considering all his moves and attack patterns are predictable after a couple of tries, I actually like how it becomes a matter of timing your charge shot and shooting the level 2 shot with good timing while he's shooting at you so that he's unable to block.
      The only ones that I find notably difficult without the dash are Chameleon and Octopus, but then again I've beaten this game like 12 times.

      Augh, yeah, I tried doing some no-boots runs, and the way Octo soaks you up while you're absolutely helpless just completely bothered me away from it. Eventually I tried it again, though, and just used a debug hack to turn boots on and off for bits like that. I really want to make my custom version/mod someday, because it will ultimately include a menu option that lets you turn armors off and back on after you obtain them! :x

    The health pickup farm-place right before the final boss (you know what I'm talking about) is the most genius kind of generosity I've ever seen in a video game, and what should've been in EVERY X GAME, period.

    • @Ender41948
      @Ender41948 6 лет назад +12

      Genius generosity, except that it has to take an eternity between final boss attempts to refill your subtanks, even more if you have 4 empty ones that need refilling? Personally, I think the subtanks you have should just fill on their own when the final boss starts, so you don't have to waste time mind-numbingly grinding. Grinding. In a sidescolling shooter.

      In X³ there is not a need for energy farming after you collect either the "Master Chip" (Golden Armor) or the "Head Enhancement Chip" which let's you slowly regain health and fill "Sub Tanks" by standing still.

    I would say that the original has some of the tightest designs of the series.Everything holds up and no stinker stages.The remake on the psp was very well done and Viles addition was cool.I was really surprised at how well the models looked in game and how smooth the animations were.Too bad the remakes of X2 and X3 with a properly playable Zero never happened.

    • @Maxodex

      I thought he was referring to the hadouken? lol

    • @thecowwarrior3
      @thecowwarrior3 8 лет назад +7

      Maybe he was. I don't consider the Hadoken one of the games weapons, I consider it more of an Easter egg. I always found it too clunky and unreliable to be very useful anyway.
      I thought he was referring to the charged Chameleon Sting, which allows the player to breeze right through the games toughest platforming sections.

    • @Gardow
      @Gardow 8 лет назад +7

      The Hadoken is required to get 100% completion, so one could consider it both a weapon and a silly easter egg. And as a one-hit kill on any boss, it was definitely worth getting proficient at. It had the highest damage output of any weapon.
      That said I thought he was referring to the Chameleon Sting as well, it's easily just as overpowered. It doesn't take as much effort to obtain either, so it could be considered even more broken.

    • @dmas-uncut8450
      @dmas-uncut8450 7 лет назад +1

      I think it's charged Sting Chameleon because it doesn't require 100% health to use =\

    • @Pensive_Scarlet
      @Pensive_Scarlet 7 лет назад +1

      It's a bit broken, but it seems like they were expecting the player to take on the Chameleon as one of the last bosses. Like the review said, he's a bit of a pain the earlier on you try to tackle him. Also, by the time you get to the Sigma levels, it's really obvious they understand the power of the charged Sting. There are a couple of segments that seem like they're literally intended to soak up its weapons energy.

    12:25 Yep completly agree with this issue first time I jump into Megaman X (well actually it was Maverick Hunter X) and this was the first time I ever played a Megaman game I got completly destroy by Sting Cameleon and Armored Armadillo to the point I have take a break from the game for several month assuming it was one of these stupid insanely hardcore game... then I come back to it take on Chill Penguin realising he was way easier than Cameleon and Armadillo and after that I tried other stage got reckt by the boss until I tried Spark Mandrill and realise bosses have a weakness to exploit, knowing that it was just a matter of knowing who is weak against what, but yeah for newcomers to the Megaman games that pick Armadillo and Cameleon good lord these 2 are brutal.

    12:30 imo the only super hard 1st pick would have to be Launch Octopus. Without dash he's crazy hard. But it is quite possible to beat them all without the dash, Maverick Hunter X even proved this by hiding the dash in Storm Eagles stage instead of placing it directly on your path in Chill Penguins stage.

  • @Shadsilvson11
    @Shadsilvson11 9 лет назад +14

    The SNES game is great (despite being more frustrating than the NES games IMO). My biggest problem with the game though is the forced failure scenario. When I got to Sigma's Fortress I found Vile to be unrelentingly tough. I put up a good fight but was losing. Then I found out the hard way I was supposed to lose to progress the story. You know what happened? I wasted all my sub tanks trying to beat him before realizing I wasn't supposed to, brutally punishing me for simply not knowing better.

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  9 лет назад +11

      +Shadsilvson11 I've never really given that any second thought, probably because Vile still doesn't have a health bar the second time you face him. That said, I can see how this would be an issue. Mega Man X can definitely have some frustration and tediousness to it, but not to the point all the fun is sucked out in my opinion.

      Do you seriously think it's more frustrating? Even with the absurdly vast amount of options the series give you? You barely can choose how to handle things in the classic series. In the X series you can cheese almost everything with advanced strategies or upgrades, which is greart for starters

    Personally I think Maverick Hunter X would've sold better if they put it on the Nintendo DS instead of on the PSP, since more of the target audience of Mega Man fans would have had the Nintendo handheld. Same deal with Mega Man Powered Up.

    You're right about the dash ability being necessary to defeat some of the Mavericks. I suspect this is why it's a default ability in the following X titles. Oddly enough as a kid I'd always face Armored Armadillo second (after Chill Penguin), and I'd beat him without using charged shots so he wouldn't use his "energy reversal" ability.
    I played MHX many years ago and I hated, hated, hated the music replacement in Vile mode. As I was really excited to play as Vile, that kinda ruined the game for me!

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  9 лет назад +1

      +Luke Jones Yeah, with the Leg Armor you can dash under Armored Armadillo's projectiles, making the fight a lot more doable. Without the dash, though, Mega Man X is a serious flick in the nuts. I often hear it is considered one of the most well-designed games of all time, but I fail to understand why. Hell, I think Mega Man X2 is better designed; smoother in terms of progression and more fair.
      Mega Man X is a great game, an absolute classic and an important installment in the Mega Man franchise, but whenever I read all the sequels are inferior I kinda scratch my head.

    • @ChopStickzP3
      @ChopStickzP3 8 лет назад +1

      +Retropolis Zone I believe the intro stage is the reason people say it's one of the most well designed games of all time. The intro stage shows you everything you can, or will later do, without actually saying much and spamming boring tutorial messages. It would be easier to explain it with visuals, but I'll try to without 'em and trust your memory of the stage.
      The second you begin to walk in the intro stage, an enemy small enough to jump over comes rolling towards you. This shows a new player that some enemies can be passed without actually shooting the buster and taking the risk of receiving damage. Then when you take a few more steps to the right, you see a larger enemy, which shows one that some obstacles can only be passed by destroying them. After that, you come across the enemies in the air, which shows the player they can combine these two things. Now let's skip ahead to the first of the two mini-bosses. After you destroy the bee, the road you're on falls down and you're seemingly stuck in a pit. Here's the thing: you run to the right side where a ridiculously narrow drop that's not much wider than X's body is and once you go down it, you see that X can slide down walls. You then experiment with this new discovery and immediately learn you can wall jump. Then right after you exit the pit, you can test your new found abilities by getting the health at the bottom of the next pit if you desire. Now let's go to the end of the level, after you lose to Vile. Right before Vile destroys X, you see a huge blast come from the left side of the screen. A second later, you see Zero DASHING into the fight. When Zero talks to X, he tells him you WILL become as strong as me, therefore implying one can do everything Zero does. (charged shots & dash)
      Let's not forget the amazing atmosphere the intro stage created, which is something later games lacked.
      To add more to the claim, I believe this tutorial method helps the player connect with X. The game doesn't treat the player like they're an idiot that is incapable of experimenting with the few buttons on the controller. Instead, the game throws you into a problematic, yet simple situation and forces you to learn how to deal with it as if the player were X. X is a robot that isn't meant to be a fighter, but he has to be one. So even X is completely ignorant of his own abilities as he storms the bases, just like the player.
      I hope I explained this well enough. There's a guy on this site with the name Egoraptor and he made a video about this and many other things that made the game so great. So if you want a more thorough explanation of everything in my post and why others believe X1 is superior, I suggest you look up his Megaman X video.
      Oh, and you actually don't need the leg upgrade to beat the game.

    Regarding the health bar, I'd assume that it's not a matter of X's defenses being weaker than classic Mega Man's, instead being a matter of the enemies having more advanced weaponry than the kind Mega Man would have fought against. I'd assume that X would be at least as tanky against classic enemies as classic Mega Man. Alternatively, it's also entirely reasonable that Dr. Light simply didn't want to give X full power right out the gate before his system integrity could be verified, you know, just in case he went maverick.

    I will say, in terms of the bosses and level order, the game seems to be designed so that a new player will only be able to take on Chill Penguin. Sting Chameleon and Armored Armadillo were designed to be deceptively possible to outwit, but they aren't easy. I have beat them with the X-buster in later years though, so it is possible. The other bosses early in the game, are less accessible, due to more difficult levels. Flame Mammoth's level is hard to get through without doing Chill Penguin first. Storm Eagle is hard to survive without the dash, Spark Mandrill's level is dangerous at the get go with electric sparks on the ground to avoid while taking on high HP enemies without any powers. Boomer Kuwanger's level is hard, until you get like the tornado and dash, but once you get that, the boss himself is very easy and I often beat him 3rd or 4th, to beat Sting Chameleon early and get invincibility from charging up. High HP enemies that die quick to the tornado or fire, seem to act as gates, and we see them all over the levels of Launch Octopus, Boomer Kuwanger, and Spark Mandrill, and they ultimately act as barriers, to funnel you towards Sting Chameleon, Chill Penguin, and Armored Armadillo, the easiest levels from the get go. I bought Mega Man X for $20 used in 1995, shortly after Christmas and I got Secret of Mana for the same price the same day. I completed all 8 Mavericks in like three days and got as far as Vile and beat him. Then I lost a bit of interest and started spending more time on Secret of Mana. But I would revisit Mega Man X every so often and eventually found all the secrets and beat Sigma. I'm still astonished as a kid though, having gotten the SNES the Christmas of 1994 with SMW and All Stars, the first games I would follow them up with would be among the best. I wanted A Link to the Past but stores didn't want to carry it, hence why that guy in the store suggested Secret of Mana to me.

      I could imagine why dash jumping would be a little awkward on the psp but the ps2 version seemed just as responsive because the DS2 is just a great controller. You could probably get more awkward with the GC port of the collection.

      It wasn't due to the psp controls because it worked perfectly when using a snes emulator. It was specifically the Megaman X maverick hunters psp game that was the problem. Also I played the GC version and had no problem with the controls. Thanks for the input👍🏼

    Whew! Finally beat this game. 100 %'d it, even! Actually pretty easy once you start getting weapons and upgrades. And contrary to the popular opinion, I think Sigma's final form is *_REALLY EASY._* Seriously, you can *_completely cheese it_* by continuously standing on the edge of one of the platforms (the lasers can't hit you at the very edge, and all of Sigma's own attacks _always_ miss like this as well) and do a hop and a Rolling Shield shot whenever the platform stops for a sec. 's *_super-easy_* like that xD

Never got around to playing X series so I look forward to checking your perspectives on it's sequels too. Overall a very enjoyable review to watch through. I never played any of the X spinoff branch of the Mega Man franchise, but this review did pique some curiosity for me to perhaps try it out on the Wii U's downloadable service someday soon. I'm a platformer veteran who's played games that require you to revisit stages and explore with new abilities in order to obtain missed items, so this isn't a big deal for me, but glad that you included reasons why people who prefer linear platforming and a straight progression either should play this with a guide in hand or otherwise just avoid it.
    Nice coverage of the PSP remake as well. The prices those cartridges sell for on auction sites is outrageous if you want my honest opinion on that.

    That was good, nice work. As you know I started out with Maverick Hunter X first. I think I might prefer that version because of the animated cutscenes (As I'm a fan of anime) and graphics. I find myself playing that version more. Though I have nothing against the original at all either after playing it on emulator. They're both good in their own way. Though I wasn't keen on Vile mode either. I would've preferred to play as Zero but they though it would be too predictable.

      +Darkstar263 I am an indecisive person so I can't really say for sure which of the two versions I like better. One day it's the SNES version, while the other it might be the PSP one. What matters most to me is that Maverick Hunter X faithfully recreates the original game and is thus a fine remake; the graphics, music and additional dialog and voice acting all come down to preferences and opinions.

    The knockback! D:< ...I always wanted to make a simple hack that added some minor improvements. One touch up would be to give the armor a similar bonus like that special shield in Mega Man 8 that keeps enemies from knocking you about. I'd also like to mod the Escape Velocity like you mentioned, so you can get out of any stage you haven't beaten yet. One of my favorite game flow patterns is to collect the four armors before beating any bosses, then go after the bosses in a pattern that lets me experience the four changeable levels without the changes. Of course, if anyone else is interested in doing this, there IS already an existing hack with a little debug thing that lets you turn on all the armors at will. You can even do the intro level with the armors like this, which is really fun for casual speed freaks! :D

    Mega Man X is my favorite Mega Man game as a kid, but I can acknowledge the game has some issues, the only bosses that I cannot beat as 1st boss choices are Storm Eagle and Launch Octopus, Eagle just knocks you off with wind which can only be really countered with the Dash, while Octopus' tornado tentacle drain is pretty much unavoidable without the Dash.
    Some people say that weapons are overpowered, I personally think they are just fun as hell, which later installments just seem to fail at, fun and powerful should be the prime objective of the weapons, graphically I love this game, looks amazing and god the soundtrack....Art!
    Storywise, yeah, your gonna need a wiki if your more concerned with the lore of the Mega Man X games, hell, most games on the SNES don't really bring out the story all that well....the Lag this game suffers from...I actually enjoy, it doesn't ruin the experience for me.
    Mega Man X Maverick Hunter.....it has a lot of good things going for it, it really does.....but the overall graphic style of the game and how the Mavericks are shown during the game just look and feel stupid, my favorites, being Mandrill, Octopus, Armadillo and Eagle were just ruined by this remake, the extra Vile mode seems cool but no, it's not enough, this remake is not worth the time.

    • @RetropolisZone

      The boss thing is really a flaw. Storm Eagle, Launch Octopus and Armored Armadillo... you are so blatantly handicapped when you take them on as first choices,

    • @xebenatrosxeracroft5178
      @xebenatrosxeracroft5178 8 лет назад

      You have a chance with Eagle, albeit a slim chance, Octopus is just unbeatable as a first as well, as he can heal himself when he grabs you, and as for Armadillo, you can beat him if you can jump his lasers and roll attacks are avoidable, the only real option as a first choice among the 3 is Armadillo and that is if you've had experience with the game.

    • @RetropolisZone
      @RetropolisZone  8 лет назад

      Oh yeah, you have a chance with Eagle and Armadillo, but they aren't well designed for a first pick. Armadillo has a ridiculous damage output and you do piss damage to him with a buster. It's literally like a 10 to 1 ratio or something, I think.

    Maverick Hunter X was pretty good as remakes go. I didn't really like the item placements being rearranged, but that wasn't a deal breaker. Definitely worth it for the "What If" Vile mode scenario and the "Day of Sigma" anime to prequel the first Mega Man X game.
    MegaMan: Powered Up, on the other hand... I did like the ability to be able to play as the different Robot Masters when they were defeated using the Buster only. I did like the optional difficulty settings for each stage, and the ability to unlock Roll and ProtoMan as playable characters... But the character art style, completely redesigning all the stages, changing the boss weaknesses, adding two un-numbered Robot Masters that weren't in the original, and giving MegaMan the abilities to slide and Charge Shot before the third and fourth adventures... It just felt like something went awfully screwy with the MegaMan timeline.

    "the engine is missing some of that blast processing"
    Yeah bro, so the console. You can't just compare the SNES CPU with a genesis. if there was ONE thing the genesis Exceeded over the SNES it's the ammount of shit it could render on screen at the same time thanks to it's processing power. This is why most detailed SNES games had a slower pace, like Donkey Kong Country, but less consuming games could allow for high speed moments, like Super Metroid, or F Zero.
    Megaman X is no exception to this rule. It needs basic backgrounds like Metroid so it can render more sprites. What i can give you, is that the art department of the First and second X is... kind of a lack luster. Still feels like pre SNES games. When Megaman 7 and Rockman and Forte had WAY better art direction. Also X 3, but that game came out around the end of the console life span.... but well, also did Rockman and Forte.
    The Snes, could do a lot of things, render more colors, had a GREAT sound chip. But it was still a 16 bit console , and when it came to PROCESSING, it was a lackluster, even compared to the genesis, And the genesis was already getting old when the SNES came out. This ain't a Megaman X problem, this was a SNES problem.

    I totally understand your gripe about not having the "Dash" upgrade at the beginning of the game and how you do require it to complete certain tasks in the game, however, to be fair it's also the only one of "Dr Lights" capsules that aren't hidden in any way. Not only is it not hidden, but as soon as you play "Chill Penguins" stage the game forces you to obtain it in order to progress. I feel like you might have being a little hard on the game because of the necessity of having it, not only that but the game just feels so slow until you aquire it. You should consider how presenting the Dash mechanic in this manner helps to familiarize the player with the concept of hidden unlockable capsules scattered through out the game, which was obviously a first for the series. By giving the player the Dash function it provides a sense of depth and mystery while also giving them motivation to explore by hinting at the potential to become much more powerful and gain new abilities in the process. It manages to provide the player with one of the most important abilities in the game without giving them to much at the beginning. If you would gain the Armor Ability or the Ability to charge special weapons prematurely in the game then you lose the sense of feeling yourself become more powerful as the game progresses. That is just my opinion anyway. Fortunately they found a way to include the dash ability at the beginning of future installments while still being able to provide an unlockable "Upgrade" for it as well. By the way "Sigma" went "Maverick" because during the fight between "Sigma & Zero" Sigma breaks the red crystal on "Zeros" forehead which contained the "Maverick" virus that was developed by "Dr. Wiley" which in turn infects "Sigma" & then slowly begins to spread amongst the other reploids. Also I wish you would have mentioned the fact that Ryus' "Hadoken" is a hidden unlockable ability, but it is what it is. You never really mentioned if you have played "MegaMan 7" on the "SNES". If you haven't you should I feel like you would enjoy it quite a bit. It has balanced weapons, a charming art style, vividly colorful graphics and backgrounds, hidden collectibles, it checks all the boxes while also providing a reasonably challenging experience.

Also, not once I have heard someone complaint about things like the dash not being there by default, the fact that it was an upgrade get you get by chance makes it so much more rewarding and appreciative.

      Games can handhold and then the opposite is games being unfair/obtuse because reasons. If the Dash not being there by default wasn't an issue, then why was it made a default power-up for every subsequent Mega Man X game? I wouldn't mind the dash not being there by default if it didn't feel like many of the bosses were designed around you having it.

      @@RetropolisZone Back then, most of the people that would be playing the original would be coming in from the classic series. Remember how 3 and 4 got lower scores because a new feature supposedly ruined the pacing? So from both a plot and development standpoint, it makes sense for a sequel to have an unlockable from the previous game.

    • @bubbykins4864
      @bubbykins4864 3 года назад

      Wouldn't a different leg part potentially ruin the pacing? The regular dash would have reduced review scores and sales as is (You do realize there'd be people jumping ship from the classic series, right? You do know how people disliked the charge shot initially for pacing problems, RIGHT!?), and considering how much love the original X still gets, it would have reduced X2 and X3 sales even further than the Cx4 chip (and jump to 5th-gen consoles, in X3's case) already did (and sales fuel most continued game production (except for 2, which was developed off the clock)). From X2 onwards, they expected most Classic fans to have already played an earlier X title (and/or Mega Man and Bass, in the case of X5 onwards), and gotten familiar with the dash by extension. They couldn't expect to do that with 3 (which introduced the slide, which had the same perceived pacing issues as the charge shot) or 4 (the charge shot came from here).

    if maverick hunter was released on an actual system and not a portable I'm convinced it would have sold very well...i really hated it and crisis core were released on a hand held

    Newcomers won't likely be good against Sting Chameleon? He's like specifically the first boss I beat in X. He's piss easy.

    14:55 The valid reason is to introduce the dash and let players realize its usefulness. There's a reason why its placed in the easiest stage and in a way in which its impossible to not take. Also, the dash was added as you were saying in all the games that came after. I don't see the necessity of complaining so much about it.

    I beat Sting Chameleon as my first choice, having never played the game before.
    Of course, it took me 10 lives, and I had to exploit his AI by camping the two upper corners, but it worked?

    a dutch PSN account?
    The major problem with Maverick hunter X is that the controls are a little wonky, and performing a wall dash jump is almost impossible and really inconsistent in the PSP port.
    The SNES version has better controls, but Maverick hunter X is a prettier package, and well worth it just for vile mode and the short movie for fans.

    Man, I still have no actual idea why the dash is an upgrade in X1. It practically forces you to do Chill Penguin's stage first (and admittedly, he's also the easiest Maverick in the game, so he's a great first choice).
    but glhf if you don't know that lol
    That happened to me as a kid and I wasn't a fan of X1 for a long time because I kept getting stuck on bosses without the dash or any powerups (and had shamefully never booted up Chill Penguin's stage). Stages were mostly pretty easy, but I couldn't make a dent on the bosses with X's paltry starting health and my general inexperience.
    as an aside, I love the cheesy instrument samples in the SNES X games so much
