L'ancien membre de Supertramp revient en France pour une tournée de concerts dans toute la France. Roger Hodgson a concocté un programme de choix puisqu'il chantera des tubes écrits lorsqu'il faisait partie du célèbre groupe rock mais aussi des titres de sa carrière solo. Les fans devront donc réviser leurs classiques !
L'artiste nous parle de sa tournée française et de ses désaccords avec Rick Davies (ex-partenaire de Roger Hodgson avec Supertramp)...
Supertramp sans Roger n 'était plus Supertramp
I don’t think many people expect to hear Roger Hodgson’s voice when they go to a Supertramp concert or they must be living on another planet. I understand Roger’s uneasiness at having other people sing his very personal songs. The truth is that Supertramp was a 1+1=3 situation. The strenght of the band relied on the contrast between Roger and Rick as well as the tight sound created by all all the members. This is kind of lost in both separate entities now.
I agree. Rick could not lead Supertramp back to the 70's glory and Roger did not achieve the same level of success on his own as hid did with the band. I wonder what would've happened had they stayed together as the powerful unit they were.
Roger is such a kind person... How can Rick be so scoundrel? Roger was the best in Supertramp. His voice, his songs, his presence. I think it would be useless an reunion with Supertramp now. Roger doesn´t need them. It´s sad that they ended up this way, of course...

Yes, it's time Roger stopped whining and recorded some new music...last time he bothered was in 2000 and that's only because this French guy dragged him in the studio in Brittany.
Interesting that he offered to join Supertramp on stage, seems odd that Davis would have turned that down or apparently ignored the offer completely? As for "being the first to announce a tour", Roger's been playing France for the past 3 years so...guess people can't stop throwing their money at him...I did.
if they had an agreement, then roger has every right to make these statements and rick needs to make it right. roger could've effectively ended supertramp in 1983 if he had really wanted to. instead, he let rick have the name. that is extremely generous of roger if you ask me.
But Rick was the founder of supertramp.. he hired roger..

This crybaby is complaining that rick davies is using his songs when in fact the songs that rick davies is using on tour are songs created by Super Tramp which included Roger. Roger wasn't the only contributor and is being a big baby about Rick using them. They were a group and everyone contributed. It seems to be all about ego and money with Roger.

The same problem as for Pink Floyd after Roger (another Roger) Waters departure. Hogdson songs are also Supertramp songs, credited to Hodgson and Davies on the albums, so Supertramp had the rights to play them live. I've seen Supertramp without Roger twice, and they were only playing 4 Roger's songs which is not very much (under a set list of 16 songs, or even more). Pink Floyd were playing much more Roger Waters songs live. Kansas live set-list is 80% Kerry Livgren songs (Livgren left the band in 1984!!); Styx are still playing Dennis DeYoung hits too. I do not see the problem if Roger Hogdson earns royalties on that.
Thats Roger's version of it, remember the importance of listening both sides of the story. There is an interview of Bob Siebenberg saying that Rick and the band had actually opened space for a possible agreement between then. He said that Roger had made it a little bit hard, he came with a lot of conditions that made the whole thing difficult. That's probably because of the fact Roger has been on solo for so long now and he got used to do things his own way
I’m not sure how much of that is true really, will have a look for it though.
Je suis allé le voir dans les loges après son concert au Palais des Congrès à Paris, et notre rencontre a vraiment confirmée ce que je pensait de lui... C'est vraiment un grand artiste qui s'investit beaucoup dans sa musique et dans ses fans. En somme il est généreux et plein de joie de vivre :)
(J'ai 16 ans et sa ne m'empêche pas d'aimer ce que Roger réalise depuis des décennies

C'est toujours un plaisir d'entendre Roger parler de ses fans Français ainsi que de son amour pour ses chansons avec un tel enthousiasme et un tel amour , cela me fait chaud au coeur !
J'ai eu l'opportunité d'une vie, de me rencontrer avec lui dans sa loge a la fin d'un concert le jour de mon anniversaire. Je garde se souvenir en foto mais essencielment dans mon cœur. Cet un homme merveilleux, très gentil, pour moi le plus grand auteur compositeur de tout les temps.

Roger is great !! i adore him
C'est un génie musical, tout simplement. On lui doit les plus grands tubes de ce groupe extraordinaire, et je pense que Rick Davis devait avoir un complexe d'infériorité face à lui, ce qui motive, aujourd'hui, son refus de la voir reprendre la route avec eux.
Quel dommage que, pour une histoire d'égo - alors que Davis est tout aussi bon - ce groupe incroyable soit amputé d'un tel artiste...
Artistiquement et vocalement Davies est bien en dessous de Hodgson, les plus grands succès de Supertramp en sont la preuve flagrante....
Et oui c'est triste, on aurait pu tellement avoir d'autres super singles c'est navrant , une histoire de dualité

Actually, if you know a little history of Supertramp and the Hodgson/Davies songwriting credit it was very much like Lennon/ McCartney… although they were both given songwriting credit on songs they wrote their songs separately.
When Rodger would introduce his songs to the band they were fully orchestrated right down to the drum parts so, no, the Rodger Hodgson songs were not ‘created’ by Supertramp but they were ‘made famous’ by Supertramp.
So it is, Roger wrote beautiful songs on Supertramp just like Rick!
The other members of the band were also essential to the whole work.
Therefore, I think Roger's useless selfishness to say "my songs, my voice"... bullshit!
I saw an interview where he cited Lennon/McCartney as an example of a partnership agreement. Okay, but despite Roger's good songs, but can't compare with McCartney, Lennon, or Harrison and their successful solo careers after the Beatles´s end.
If Roger Hodgson has not returned to supertramp, at least for the request of many fans, is because Rick Davis has not allowed it. Rick Davis is very angry with Roger Hudgson, but I say that Rick should make a side that resentment and think about all their (Supertramp) fans, including me.

Quoique j'aime bien ses albums solo studio sur lesquels il ne reprend aucune chanson de Supertramp - sauf sur son deuxième ''Hai Hai'' sur lequel il reprend une de ses propres composition ''Land Ho'' qui n'était parut que sur un single en face B de la chanson ''Summer Romance'' de Rick Davies en 1974. J'ai toujours préféré son ancien groupe qui, suite à son départ en 1983, a sorti certains de ses meilleurs albums, dont ''Brother Where You Bound'' avec David Gilmour à la guitare solo sur la longue pièce-titre. Et les autres albums subséquents ''Free as a Bird'', ''Some Things Never Change'' et ''Slow Motion''. Ce qui m'énerve de Roger, c'est qu'il se sent obligé de s'afficher partout en tournée comme l'''ex-chanteur de Supertramp'', est-ce que Supertramp s'affichaient eux comme l'''ancien groupe de Roger Hodgson'' ? Non ! Il n'avait pas besoin de faire ça, comme quoi le groupe pouvait très bien se passer de lui. Mais il semble que Roger ne peut se passer de Supertramp, la preuve c'est qu'il est obligé de s'afficher partout comme l'ex de... Comme le chantaient les Beatles : ''...boy, you're gonna carry that weight for a long time...''

Roger Hodgson est l'un des artistes les plus étonnants, chanteurs, auteurs-compositeurs, compositeurs que j'aie jamais connu. J'aime ses concerts! Ils sont pleins de sentiment et aussi édifiante et beaucoup d'amour. Je n'ai jamais rien vécu de tel auparavant, à un concert de musique comme je le fais avec Roger. Il est très, très spécial! concert Supertramp avait froid et manquait de la chaleur et le sentiment de la musique je me montre à Roger. Une connexion coeur belle aux chansons.
@noxomox Unfortunately, you are not viewing it in the context of what was agreed to by Roger and Rick, as well as the legal standing of all of it. The right to the name "Supertramp" is now owned by Rick Davies. The copyright for the *recordings on the albums* of the Supertramp songs are held by a record label (A&M if I recall correctly). The copyright for the songs themselves are held by Roger for the songs he wrote and by Rick for the songs he wrote. There is no joint copyright.
@noxomox I don't think it's all about money for Roger. I just read some old news article about Roger releasing his Supertramp hits for free download. And what Rick is doing is just lame, how can you disagree with that, only a fool would do that.
Thnk about it as a trademark, Rick in the other hand maybe wants money using the Supertramp trademark to get to the skies. While Supertramp actually is none else than Roger Hodgson. Disagree with me if you want, but I don't think anyone understands you
@noxomox Also, Roger does not want Supertramp to disband; it's very clear in all his interviews. However, there is the two matters of (a) Rick performing Roger's songs, which is contrary to their agreement and (b) using Roger's voice as part of the promotion of the current incarnation of Supertramp, again in violation of the agreement they had. I think Roger has every right to be angry and to speak out so that fans are not misled by what they are paying to see when they go to see "Supertramp".

Eles são duas metades de um todo. Nunca serão completos um sem o outro (na música). Seria uma grande demonstração de humildade de ambos, voltar a cantar juntos... em nome da música que eles fizeram a nós todos gostar. Dificilmente isso ocorrerá, mas somos todos "Dreamers"..!
They are part of one together. Never will be complete one without the other (in music). There could be a great demonstrations of humility if they come to sing togheter again. It´s almost impossible... we are dreamers !

Roger Hodgson était l'âme de Supertramp, Rick Davies n'en est que l'ombre car il n'a jamais eu et n'aura jamais ni la créativité ni le talent de Hodgson et souffre d'in complexe d'infériorité flagrant !!!
Rick est incroyablement talentueux aussi, il a écrit la moitié des chansons de supertramp :)
Je te conseille d'aller voir "another man's woman" joué en live à Londres en 1997, son solo est à couper le souffle... Malheureusement Rick est clairement sous-estimé et méconnu...
Hodgson est vraiment talentueux aussi, mais c'est grâce à sa collaboration avec Rick qu'est né Supertramp. Goodbye Stranger, Another man's woman, Rudy, Lover Boy, Gone Hollywood et pleins d'autres musiques ont étés écrites par Rick Davies!
Personnellement, je pense que Hodgson n'aurait jamais eu une telle réputation sans Rick.
