    The induction roar of a K5 engine is pretty much the main reason I wanted a gsxs1000f. One of my all time favourite engines. Always fancied test riding a katana to see how they directly compare. The useable low down torque is absolutely brilliant.

    I love inline 4 engines, I just can't own them as I'd lose my license. Everything about them is made so that the fun is only at much illegal speeds. I like what Suzuki did hear though, definitely a bike that stands out from the basic Japanese bikes.

    You really should add a 4 cylinder bike to your collection, I've had over a dozen 4s(400s, 600s, 750s and 1000s) and like you always loved the smoothness of an inline four but saying that probably the best four I had was a V4, the little Honda RVF, the sound alone of a high reving V4 is addictive.

    I took one of these out a month or so back. I had the isea it would be as good as the first Katana that I owned new many years ago. The first Katana was a bike that was nothing less than incredible, the engine was superb and the handling was brilliant for the time it was built.
    I thought the new Katan might find a place along side my other bikes, I was seriously wrong. Compared to the first Katana the new one is bland and uninspiring. It dosnt come close to matching what was an incredible bike many years ago. My biggest issue was not being able to feel planted on the bike, I never felt like I was comfortable or that the bike felt natural to ride.
    The one I owned many years ago fitted like a glove and inspired balls out confidence in what the bike could do. The new one did nothing even close.

      I've had this happen with various different things over the years. But when i've actually gone back to trying them again today, you realise the feeling you had back then just isn't the same today. I believe this is what rose tinted glasses refers to.
      So if you had said you tried the new one today and went straight to the older bike again and the older is better, i'd be more likely to believe it.
      Even my elderly father who's in his 80's now, still raves about his 1976 Honda 750 four F1 and in his eyes, nothing can beat it. My sv650 would trounce it in every department but in his head, it wouldn't lol.

    It looks a whole lot better in black than silver. I was a fan of the original when it was released. A fantastic looking bike and has stood the test of time. Unfortunately this one fails around the handlebar area. Because its a more upright position the bars make it look like a big scooter. They have gone for retro by using the styling out of their back catalogue a-la Z900RS but they’ve tried to amalgamate an upright riding position into it. The problem with the Katana is that the original was designed with low handlebars that integrated with the bodywork and the sports ethos of the bike. Remember that the 1000cc version was basically a race bike on the road. This bike emotes the bodywork of the past but Suzuki have given it an upright riding position a-la the Z900RS, CB1000 and the Speed Twin and it just doesn’t work aesthetically. Most comments I’ve seen online for the bike are negative, and unfortunately I would have to concur. A missed opportunity I feel.

      Banditmanuk totally agree. I’ve just bought a Gsx S1000. The black one looks nice but here in Oz the katana is $3000 more than a Gsx S and the 12l tank on the Katana is a joke. I think Suzuki missed the mark on this one.

    • @tcpiptv
      @tcpiptv 4 года назад

      @@jameshind6644 It missed the mark only because Suzuki didn't use the newer GSX-R 1000 package with electronics (which the Katana name deserves). Otherwise the cyberpunk styling is spot on. There are currently loads of unsold 2017 GSX-R 1000's sitting at the docks in Australia (I was thinking about getting a 2020 model but it's impossible). Suzuki should have thought about a way of re-purposing them (well maybe they have for a MK II?).

    • @jameshind6644
      @jameshind6644 4 года назад +1

      tcpiptv It missed the mark on a number of items. Tiny fuel tank, $3000 price difference with an updated console it’s basically a restyled Gsx S1000 with a bigger price tag. Suzuki are known for value for money motorcycles I’m not sure where the value is on this bike. Now if they had included more electronics and a more powerful engine for the current price then they could have had a winner. To me they are trying to sell this bike on the back of the originals cult status.

    Sturgis Motorsports (my local dealer) got a new Katana last week. It is a very handsome motorcycle, for sure. I, like you, have never owned an in line four. I never cared for the "bumblebee in a can" sound of many of the 600cc varieties, but the Katana you're on sounds really nice. My VMAX 1200, with its stock pipes, has a nice deep sound. I'd like to hear this Katana in the flesh. Looking forward to your follow up on this.

    I had a 98 katana and loved it, just wish it was bigger than 600. Now this katana has a bigger engine but to me looks terrible

    How does it compare to the Street Triple R? Bigger engine and less cylinders I know, but I’ve had my Triumph since 2012 and absolutely love it but thinking about a possible change next year and the Katana is one that’s caught my eye.

    I’ve owned 4 Suzukis, and never had a problem with low speed feeling. The engines were also bombproof . Putting aside the plus points though, the best place to view the Katana from , is onboard.
    It’s .... mother in law ugly. 🧙🏻‍♀️

      John LEON agreed on the vfr 750, RC 30 etc, but I always liked the naked styled bikes. The GS 850, 1000, Z1, CB750 four and so on. 🍻

    I seem to recall a 'ginger child' quip of yours from days gone by. This is the ginger kid in the Suzuki range. GSXS 750/1000 looks way better. Nicely done TMF, thanks as always.

      @karlosh9286 4 года назад

      Yeah, the Z900RS looks a lot better to me too. Only the radiator position on the Z900RS looks a bit naff, but it's not that bad. Z900RS has a good sized fuel tank (17L) instead of the 12L on the Katana. Small fuel tanks are just such a pain in the posterior. In a choice between the 2, I'd have the Z900RS. I wouldn't need the extra 29 BHP of the Katana.

    I wanted to like it but Suzuki went so cheap on this bike. No electronic throttle with cruise control, no quickshifter as standard is a joke. Cable clutch,rubber brake lines, this thing is not a premium bike and the micro tank just spoil it

    They should turbocharged it and made it a h2 killa... unfortunately this bike nothing special.

    Striking looks. 12 litre fuel tank is a bit too small. Yeah I'd like a 4 cylinder bike, but I think that'll be a much cheaper and less powerful Honda CB650R in a year or two.
    The question is when are you going to get a 4 cylinder bike ? I guess you can borrow so many, you don't need to buy one !

    Eine Katana soll das sein, so so. Man nehme einen Aufkleber und klebe diesen Katana Aufkleber auf den Tank, und schon steht eine Katana vor dir!!!. Suzuki macht es sich verdammt leicht ein neues Modell zu bezeichnen, ist es doch nur eine GSX 1000S mit anderer Tankform. Eine serienmäßige Katana mit Hochlenker hat es nie gegeben. Mal gespannt ob sie dieses Teil in weiß und blau anmalen, dann steht plötzlich eine " Wes Cooley Replika. Vor dir. Es ist einfach nur eine Irreführung und Betrug was uns da vorgesetzt wird. Diese sogenannte Katana, hat mit dem original absolut nichts zu tun, weder optisch noch sonst was.
