The poetry always came first with Cohen. I have a few of his books within reach as I write this. He was the first to take a poke at his voice and later surrounded himself with great musicians. ☮️ Master Poet

This is great poetry! You have to listen to the feeling and transcendent meaning.

My eldest daughter used this song walking down a running carpet in the desert for her wedding! She was always drawn to this old song, same as her Momma! Glad to see you experience it young man 😽🎶

This is in my top 3 of his songs. So long Marianne is also amazing! Great reaction . Cohen was an amazing poet putting it into song. Very deep sometimes. I think he was amazing. He’s talking about a woman he knew who lived on the St. Lawrence River. Love this man. So much. He may be too deep for many listeners.

Had the good luck to go to his concert in Portsmouth UK around 1975, while a student at Winchester Textile College, everything was perfect and went well overtime so we missed our train home, such a wonderful memory. Thank you for this reaction and never mind I have two of his concert DVD's.

Charlie Daniels (the guy from Devil Went Down to Georgia) was in Leonard’s band at this time.

On the album this is a bit faster. I watched a documentary about this concert and I seem to remember that he was kinda high for this, And he wasn't always all that comfortable singing early on anyway. Poet first. So many people just loved when he conveyed it through music, so he did. Thank Goodness!!!
Oh, and, you cracked me up when you were bursting in to laughter at the beginning,I've definitely never heard that reaction to this song, and I got a kick out of it💜 and dozing at the end😂End of a long day heh?

have always loved Leonard Cohen, I like his poems and many of his songs.
I never liked Suzanne very much.
    her voice is velvet.
he is a man I would have loved to have known.

Your reaction felt disrespectful and your inclination to fall asleep instead of addressing the lyrics made me wonder if you were really listening

Well, his reaction is his real reaction. Coming from generations of hiphop and rap, I’m surprised he listened in the first place. Leonard did seem a bit sleepy in this performance though.
