  • This is an overview of the course from its beginnings which charts the epics from cultures that exalt freedom and virtue, through their Christianization and development of what we might call the 'Western values' of freedom and dignity, which I argue are a direct consequence of the Biblical view of human nature being reflected culturally in the countries where it was received as the word of God.
I look at 1984 as the final text on the course, in order to show the departure from a belief in human freedom and human dignity, 1984 demonstrating his belief in where human society would be heading with the totalitarian scientific mindset of the transhumanists of his day. I make some contrasts between Huxley and Orwell, but agree with Huxley that their vision is ultimately the same, even if the means for eventual human degradation might differ.
