    I would give almost anything to see this film restored and colorized. It was meant to be shot in color, with the costumes all dyed to match the old portraits and even some to match the color of Norma Shearer's eyes. A breathtaking film from a time when movies were meant to be events.

      Colonizing black and white films is defacing great art, should never be done.

    All the movies depicting Marie Antoinette seem to forget she was 14 when she came to France...she is always depicted as a mature woman.

    • @Luanna801
      @Luanna801 2 года назад +10

      In fairness, that's because they're usually using one actress to depict her from that point up until she died at age 37. Although I guess they could get a younger actress for the earlier scenes and switch midway through the movie, but they probably want the continuity of using one actress throughout.

      @@Luanna801 I was thinking the same thing when I saw this movie and the 2006 one. They only want to keep it as one actress just because their popular or just got popular from a movie. Just because your an A-list doesn't mean that the movie will always be good, it's just security.

    It may not be the most historically accurate but it’s beautiful to have these black and white movies

    I am waiting for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has planning to restore and remastering this movie in Sepiatone with a new 4K restoration on Blu-ray for celebrating 80th Anniversary.

    I enjoyed this movie. I really like Norma Shearer, but Robert Morley actually broke my heart a little bit as the pompous but sweet weirdo version of King Louie. He knew about his wife's love for another but dealt with that and his impending death with kindness and love for his wife and children.
    Don't use this movie to revise for a history test though🤔

      A hear later, MGM filmed in technicolor the "Wizard of Oz", but MGM as being the biggest studio, was tight when it came to make a technicolor movie. Imagine, at that time, Hedy Lamarr, known as the most beautiful woman in the world, never had put her in a technicolor movie, she had to go to Paramount and do two movies for them in technicolor, 11 years later.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 Год назад

      @@noel888 Louis B Mayer did not think the audience cared about technical innovations if they could see stars in a good story. He felt Technicolor- which added 60% to the budget- was suitable only for fantasies such as Oz, and that its gaudiness meant that players and elaborate sets got lost in it. For the industry's leading studio, MGM was slow to embrace color, and Norma quit before it did.

    This film was made on a time when France still had one more invasion of Germany ahead. The film portrays a queen of old france when it was still old france. Antoinette for them must be what making a film about martin luther king would've been to us.

    I guess if Leslie Howard could get away with playing Romeo, Norma could pass as a 14 y.o. princess. Audiences minded less about age in the Golden Age. The moguls would rather make up a grown-up star to look younger than make a kid seem older. Otherwise we would have had Freddie Bartholomew in a white wig and Deanna Durbin with wrinkles.
