I would give almost anything to see this film restored and colorized. It was meant to be shot in color, with the costumes all dyed to match the old portraits and even some to match the color of Norma Shearer's eyes. A breathtaking film from a time when movies were meant to be events.
Colonizing black and white films is defacing great art, should never be done.
May this never be colorized 🙏
All the movies depicting Marie Antoinette seem to forget she was 14 when she came to France...she is always depicted as a mature woman.
In fairness, that's because they're usually using one actress to depict her from that point up until she died at age 37. Although I guess they could get a younger actress for the earlier scenes and switch midway through the movie, but they probably want the continuity of using one actress throughout.
@@Luanna801 I was thinking the same thing when I saw this movie and the 2006 one. They only want to keep it as one actress just because their popular or just got popular from a movie. Just because your an A-list doesn't mean that the movie will always be good, it's just security.
Her husband Louis was a teenager too, and they casted an actor who looks like he's 40
It may not be the most historically accurate but it’s beautiful to have these black and white movies
I am waiting for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has planning to restore and remastering this movie in Sepiatone with a new 4K restoration on Blu-ray for celebrating 80th Anniversary.
I enjoyed this movie. I really like Norma Shearer, but Robert Morley actually broke my heart a little bit as the pompous but sweet weirdo version of King Louie. He knew about his wife's love for another but dealt with that and his impending death with kindness and love for his wife and children.
Don't use this movie to revise for a history test though🤔
Underrated classic!!!
Absolutely. Norma Shearer gave an all time performance
This is the best and classic movie of Marie Antoinette! They pulled out all the stops making this with the exception of not making it in color.
They went over budget surprisingly! Lol
@@garzapinups I am not surprised. The Versailles set is probably more splendid than the real Versailles!
A hear later, MGM filmed in technicolor the "Wizard of Oz", but MGM as being the biggest studio, was tight when it came to make a technicolor movie. Imagine, at that time, Hedy Lamarr, known as the most beautiful woman in the world, never had put her in a technicolor movie, she had to go to Paramount and do two movies for them in technicolor, 11 years later.
@@noel888 Louis B Mayer did not think the audience cared about technical innovations if they could see stars in a good story. He felt Technicolor- which added 60% to the budget- was suitable only for fantasies such as Oz, and that its gaudiness meant that players and elaborate sets got lost in it. For the industry's leading studio, MGM was slow to embrace color, and Norma quit before it did.
This film was made on a time when France still had one more invasion of Germany ahead. The film portrays a queen of old france when it was still old france. Antoinette for them must be what making a film about martin luther king would've been to us.
Excellent, saw on another site . Tyrone, omg , Norma shearer should have won Oscar
Agreed! Brilliant acting, made me cry 😭the love between Marie and Fersen was so romantic and beautiful ❤️ and it broke my heart when Louis got executed 😭
Agreed! They pulled out all the stops on this movie and Norma will always be Marie Antoinette to me!
No, Bette Davis was great in Jezebel and very deserved her Oscar
why cant they make clean cut historical movies like this anymore and the stars back then ahhh! they were so glamourous and beautiful, especially the great tyrone power nobody today has the stature of these movie gods of the golden age of Hollywood!
elchoya100 I agree. It may not be 100% accurate but it's pretty damn close. I love this movie and I've seen it too many times to count.
Uuuuuuhh. 1. This is not historically accurate and 2. "clean cut". ???? not very. But it is supremely Hollywood and very successful in that way.
elchoya 100: I agree with you about the great Tyrone Power. He is perfect as Count Fersen!!!
Love Tyrone Power 💕
Tyrone Power🥰💕
Queen Marie Antoinette of France was such a gorgeous, goodhearted, adorable sweetheart, and that's why I love her. She's by far the most greatest royal Queen in History.
I disagree
$40 a ticket in 2018 prices. I wonder what their non-standard pricing was?
Call me pathetic, but this film made me cry like I haven't in years. Norma made a priceless Antoinette, maybe the best one I've ever seen.
I like this film. Norma was very good, but Robert Morley was better. I think Norma very scenes are at the end of the film, she was really impressive as the doomed queen on the way to guillotine.
That part where they tried to kill the King and Queen.
Being informed and more intelligent is better than being a city puppet.
Classic awesome movie, my favorite Norma Shearer movie besides The Women
I so agree re having this movie & many other movies of this quality colorized. Many old classics have & the color would so enhance & confirm our imagination as to the Brilliance & Splendor. Oh please please do so, before we leave this life 🙏
Nunca olvidé esta maravillosa pelicula ! Madre, voy a ser reina !!!
Magnifique interpretation we Norma Shaerer. Elle allie a la fois la legerete et le courage de Marie-Antoinette.
Por que no se puede ver completa

Bellissimo film italiano ma non sì vede bene?
Perché non passate i film in italiano...non tutti sanno L’inglese grazie

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I guess if Leslie Howard could get away with playing Romeo, Norma could pass as a 14 y.o. princess. Audiences minded less about age in the Golden Age. The moguls would rather make up a grown-up star to look younger than make a kid seem older. Otherwise we would have had Freddie Bartholomew in a white wig and Deanna Durbin with wrinkles.
