The hot comb. A black women's longest frenemy on this earth. It's like a bee, if you're chill when it's around, you'll be fine but if you move or don't hold that ear...
I always held my ear but still got burned behind the ear and on the neck by my mom as a child. Those things gave me PTSD! If I never see another one it'll be too soon! Was so thrilled when the relaxer kits came out . . .
My mom didn't have an electric one and I really wanted to have bone straight hair and because I was scared of getting burnt it just did not work lol
@@awordindueseasonI never used one so thanks I am natural btw.

I had it once. ever since then. I never went back to having a hot comb.
I really appreciate how Brad takes time to compliment these women's natural hair as well as the end result. To this day so many people are telling black people that their hair would look better straight... It's refreshing to see someone who loves ALL forms of natural hair ❤️
Thats just silly. (The judgers, not you :) )
I just love the natural hair when it’s 4A-4C, I’m white with blonde 1C hair, so it sort of breaks my heart that I can’t do little Afro puffs.
Yes! I don’t understand why people don’t think it’s beautiful. It’s just a different texture of hair, plus it REALLY suits some girls I couldn’t imagine them without it :)
all hair is beautiful! i don’t know why the haters are jealous of natural hair because they don’t know the struggle of it. i have curly hair myself, but it’s sad people are getting hated on natural hair :c
「GraceTendo」 im sure it’s super hard to deal with! Props to you guys for making it look so good 😁
Can we see more curly/coily natural styles? Silk presses are art but styling natural hair to hold its own curl or a Bantu knot is BEAUTIFUL. Would love to see some of that!
I think because he’s a hairstylist he watches videos that are involved with hairstylist like silk presses. But I would love some natural hair reacts
I completely agree!
He should watch Jess ridley! She us so good at coloring and styling her natural hair
@@jyiahosbornes1461 Good point. If there are nice deva cut/curly cut transformations out there, he could react to those.

me a bald man when brad posts: "yes i definitely need to know about 4c hair"
Then again as a bald man....why do u need to know about any hair...🤣
same hahaha
honestly it’s great to be educated either way 😁
Yea, I have the straightest hair possible and yup.
Imagine his wife asking him to help her and he slays her and is impressed 😂👏
Proof that not every Black girl you see with long (or short), thick, straighten hair is wearing a wig or weave. I have dealt with people making a lot of assumptions about my hair. And if we do decide to wear weaves or wigs that's okay too!! I know I personally love to switch it up and go natural, wear wigs, braids, and other protective styles. Much love to everyone open to learning about other people's hair!!
omg this! so many people think my natural hair is a wig (nothing wrong with that) like noo this is mine lol
🗣🗣 people act like we don’t have our own beautiful hair....they be so amazed 😂😅😁
One of my best friends has mixed twin daughters who just turned 3 years old. They have combination 4b/4c hair and my friend has really struggled with their hair because being white, we just don’t have experience with it and it’s a bit of a learning curve. So about 6 months ago I became fascinated (somewhat obsessed lol) with watching videos on caring for 4c hair and I’ve been practicing on her daughters. I want her girls to love their hair, just the way it is (I don’t use any heat on them yet) so I’ve been getting pretty good at braids and twists and did a ton of product research. I even ordered some beads and stuff from amazon and they get so excited every time I come do their hair. I’m no professional so I’m so grateful for these videos!
Or that we have to ne mixed to have wavy hair
Why do you need to prove yourself to others? Do you need others to recognize you to feel validated as a person?
i love how all the black girls are coming together in this comment section talking about how they hate hot combs
And point out that Brad doesn't know what type 4 hair looks like. I get it they rarely learn about black/natural hair, but it is false misinformation. Not every black girl has 4c hair.

I thought I would answer some of your questions. Too much heat protectant weighs down the hair. The reason we twist/braid afterwards is to keep the hair stretched as possible w/o having to go in with heat again. The hot comb is the best way to get the roots as straight as possible. Curls make the silk press last longer. We wrap our hair every night to make the style last and to make sure the oils in our hair don't slip out on cotton.
can you explain to me how to do the hair wrap? it's okay if you can't, but i'm 16 years old, and when my hair isn't braided, i sometimes have it straight but i don't know how to wrap it at night.
@@spookyzombie7769 I can try just brush your hair from the front part (at the root) and brush around your head until either your hair stops or you reach all the way around your head. I use pins to secure the ends of the wrap, and then throw a satin scarf on and go to sleep. I hope this helps!
valuable explanations! thank you for taking the time

Finally!! I love how inclusive Mondo is.
Me too!! I don't have that hair but I'm thrilled that stylists are finally on board with learning more about how to work with it! It makes me very excited about what that'll do to the hair industry
Yeah, just curly hair in general tbh
I’m about to start my hairdresser appreciateship and I want to learn about everyone’s hair! Men, woman, children, and just straight hair as well as 4c
Is there anyone else that grew up getting their hair straightened with a hot comb, but not the electric one but the one with the hot comb stove?
Yes, I still talk about it to my mom to this day. Your mom press your hair either when you going to church. You can always tell because someone has a burnt mark in the back of the neck or behind the ears
Back when I was little, I lived in Haiti and they had charcoal stoves so my mom used to straighten my hair in the backyard next to the stove to keep the comb hot😳😳😳
Me..lol....
I still have one ! 😁
I was 8 when the comb slipped out of my mom's hand and the comb landed on my right side of my face . Coco butter was my best friend for two months .....the burned ears yeah I remember all to well.😂😂😂

“You’ve been saving that one for the entire video haven’t you” we love you Brad
I just appreciate how he refers to this hair type as 4c and super curly, and not like how other people will say "textured". All hair is textured, dammit. He doesn't call the hair "nappy" or "kinky", which I appreciate.
I thought kinky wasn’t an insult. So my 4c hair is just really «curly»
Kinky isn’t a bad word! Just the word for super coily hair
I’d describe my 4c hair as kinky cause it is 🤷🏾♀️
It’s funny cause that first girl not even 4c 😭
Calling hair kinky is fine tho! It’s a curl type :3
I just love when Brad talks about Hi-texture/black hair types, and gets so excited about how we style! I would love to see Brad use his products on different hair textures. *Shouts to Brad’s Assistant* Hey boo, I know you can make this happen! We need that video on RUclips for XMONDO HAIR!!
Love his products on my mixed hair!
I'd actually really get behind this. I want to try Brad's products, but I've wasted money before on products that promise great things but just don't work for me because of my heritage. I'd love to see examples.
Agreed, I want to see how it would fair on African descendants.
It’s ok to say “black!” Black and African American aren’t the same :)
Annika Joseph I say both, to each it’s own. Some prefer one, some prefer the other. As a black woman I have the right to choose which I want to be called 😉, it’s all good.
Off topic: Is Brad finally slowly growing his dream mullet?!

That’s so sweet of you to actually take the time out to learn. I know the girls are happy! My natural hair is 3c/4a and I still binge watch all curly hair videos. I just love to see people get their hair done. Even straight hair!
BTW your picture is beautiful!
The fact that you treat their hair as something beautiful and worthy is very important. When your hair is so different than those around you its VERY easy to grow up hating your own hair. I think many black girls go through that as kids and even as adults. So keep telling them their hair is beautiful the way it is! It makes all the difference! You're a great friend!
@@everyonelovesstephanie thank you so much, you are STUNNING! And I agree, it’s so satisfying watching hair transformation videos!
@@keepinitkawaii thank you for saying that! Um no it is not he is not black so he doesn’t have black hair (so no personal experience) and they do little to NO kinky hair classes in cosmetology school so it is normal for non-black stylists to be uneducated.
Brad is doing GREAT in educating himself and other stylists should take note
@@Shay45 ikr I was taken to a white stylist once when I was young and they totally fucked up my hair
Shay45 Very much this. I happen to have some experience with similar hair (my own since I learned how to properly care for it watching black hair care tutorials), but it’s never going to be the same as someone who actually has black hair. If my children happen to have mixed children, I would totally go to the black community to learn as much as I could about their hair types before even attempting to do anything with their hair simply because they know way more about it than I ever will.
"Who knew you liked it that straight, Brad"
Sorry, Brad, that was in fact hilarious. I giggled for a good 5 minutes over it. I had to come back to post this comment.
One the most misleading searches on RUclips is “4C natural hair”... let me tell you... if you have actual 4c hair you will get depressed because everyone thinks that if their hair is dense, kinky, dry or otherwise it’s 4c. If you say it’s not, “you are a natural hair Nazi” gets thrown. Anyway, I love that Brad does these regardless.
Its crazy how you're telling the truth and u didn't get as many likes on your comment as others 😔😔😔
That must be really frustrating if you have 4C hair!! Would you say all three of the women in this video have it?
Why are people always claiming they have 4C hair to act like they're special? Love your hair, but don't lie.
Sigurjon543 true look at the girl in video her hair is definitely not 4c 😂
Trueee! One of the girls definitely had 4a/4b hair it was just dry and needed a protein treatment/hydration

I am 34 with 4c hair and honey I will tell you this, 4c hair is BEAUTIFUL, thick and luscious when taken care of properly. I have had my battle with my 4c hair and realized that a short, blonde haircut or a gorgeous lace front wig is my best friend. I applaud these beautiful women for their commitment to embrace their wonderful locs and shrinkage! However, sis, I had flashbacks about being in the kitchen, next to the stove, getting burned by that hot comb because my mama said I was too young for a perm.
Brad: *nervous with the hot comb
Me: *flashes back to when I was 5 and my grandma had the hot comb you put on the gas stove
Then she wipes it of with a paper towel
Then it's too my roots
She's blowing it as she is combing my hair.
Me: immediately starts sweating from fear
The visual I just got from your description lol. #memories
The scariest part is when she check if it’s hot enough by slapping it on her hand
Lol my mom came close to ending my life w her hot comb on several occasions....it builds character😅
I FELT this‼️😩
Lol yes. Never again

Same, sis. I'm 49!
It’s harder than it looks
It’s hard half the time i just put it in a bonnet and sleep lol
I feel like people over complicate it. because my family tried to teach me but I could never get it right until I just made up my own way wich is put it on ur hair like a towel pretending to be a wig, grab both sides with ur hair inside, and just tie a knot with it on the top of ur head. they tell me its wrong but my hair is packed up with is all that matters imo
Girl it's hard. I still have a hard time myself and I'm 28😂Never really learned. My mom always kept her hair done or out of the way and always kept our hair in plaits until I was old enough to do my own hair. Still don't really know i always keep it in a very loose pont tail or bun with a satin hair tye and slap a satin bonnet or or doo rag that is a game changer for me.
Twist or braiding after drying keeps it sectioned and stretched ready for the flatiron
☝🏽And keeps it stretched for prototypical (I might have made that word up but you get my gist) 4c hair that it greatly resists heat stretching and immediately wants to shrink back close to the scalp- its happy place .💜
@@sammy69831 prototyping?
@@jumaraalcantara9939 The word should have just been “typical”.

As someone who cares for my own natural hair, I love way there was a clear difference (to me) with what he critiqued and what he was simply surprised by (because only we really know what works a lot of the time)
I thorough enjoyed watching him clearly appreciate how much work we put in and he was frustrated with us when it didn’t go as planned because it’s still hard work, and we’ve all been there.
Anyway, thanks Brad if you read this for both including natural hair, and for embracing and trying to understand it’s uniqueness
I love that more professional hair stylist are interested in learning how to do different types of hair. I learned by having to do my own hair. Nothing more frustrating than having an appointment with a stylist who has no clue how to do curly hair and then we end up out the money for crapy hairdos. Then having to spend more money on a different stylist, or doing it ourselves.

when ur Dominican mom didn’t know how to deal with ur natural hair so you’ve had about 8 years of heat damage (I’m 15) 😭😭
Same here sis
FELT THIS. Girl i've never had my natural hair until now and I'm 21. 21!!!! I did a big chop like almost bald and now i have curls I've never seen before
Same girl just Puerto Rican mom 30 now, glad at 12 she stopped and sent me to a lady up the block.
aghdsj gsdhtj baby dont cut your hair you dont have to prove yourself to anybody you’re only 13, and you may regret it, maybe you wont, but you can make a statement without shaving it. i once got my hair braided in a beehive and wore that. that was a statement. i was nervous for people to see me with literally one braid but i got a lot of compliments and my scalp got to breath. lol thats the closest to bald i’ve ever been... you may like something like that first ❤️
Yessss I have had my hair straightened sense I was 3yr old an i had never had my curls embraced until I was i. Highschool an i started taking care of it my self. An i got to see my heat damage curls. Last year for my 21s birthday I cut my hair an now this lock down has gave the chance to learn about my ture curl pattern an about my hair
Your point of view is so refreshing, the humility and willingness to learn and how you hype up naturals 🥺❤️🌻🤗 God bless you dear 👌🏽
just a note hot combs wear used as flat irons back in the day burn or not it got the job done black girl memories
Big facts. I feel like flat irons are a relatively new tool. 20 years ago my hairdresser only used hot combs. Memories.
Im telling you girl ! My little sister and i had hup length hair my hair is 3b, 3c, and 4A all in one head my sister has 4B type hair and my moth fid her thang with the pressing comb in the late 80's and early 90's our hair was bone straight shiny and silky we looked like Pocahontas with our hip length hair . I miss those days so much ! My hair never 👀 heat now i have too mucj aint nobody got time ( or patience) for that love your willingness yo learn about black hair brad
Flat iron was introduced to my hair in 2007.....hot comb on DA STOVE till then
I have to say this. I am happy to see someone who respects and celebrate natural hair!! Thank you Brad Mondo!
I would love to see him react to natural hair routines and see how different everyone does their hair.
When you said “Dominican style blowout” I felt seen. I don’t have 4c hair but it is very curly and extra long and being Dominican I have spent many hours in a salon getting my hair blown out. Typically it takes 5 or 6 hours to blow out my hair.
Girls who know will know: when that hot comb came out, the top of my ears felt a phantom singe. Uh-uhn. No ma'am.
yes, as soon as I saw it I cringed
Yuuup.
That steam burn😣
This reminds me of when I was a kid, my mom took me for a haircut. After the woman had finished, she pulled out the curling iron, and I yelled, incredibly loud, with absolute terror in my voice, at a moment when you could hear a pin drop, "Oh no, please don't!! That's the thing my mom always likes burn me with." Needless to say, she got A LOT of dirty looks, before the hairdresser asked me a few pointed questions to confirm it was not something she did on purpose.

two words: JANAY MICKLES. Her silk presses are stellar.
i love love love her videos!!!
Brad is giving me a leo in romeo+juliet vibe rn
YES!!!!!! Well, his cousin. I couldn't think of why his shirt was working up a memory, but that was it!
Omg yes!! ❤️❤️
YEAH
"Who knew you liked it so straight, Brad?" - I.AM.ON.THE.FLOOR. Brad walked into that like a wide open door.
"Oh she's using a hot comb those combs make me nervous" me too my guy. 😂
I love how you are open to learn about different types of textured hair and how to properly style it. Not a lot of white cosmetologist know how to do black hair and it's refreshing to see one that is willing to learn how to expand his knowledge on how to do it. That's how you build your clientele. My mother was a great stylist and knew how to do different textures of hair. Kudos to you for always wanting to learn and improve your craft.
Plot twist: when Brad says ‘hi beautiful ‘ he’s actually looking at a mirror and talking to himself 😂😭💕
As he should tbh 😂💕
*Self esstem as left the chat*
I reject this theory lmao
The 1st girl's hair is GORGEOUS but looks more like 4B
Bruh that’s not 4b, it’s possibly 4a
@@whatthe640 4A/B. I just know for sure it's definitely not 4C. I think the poster child for luscious 4C curls is Issa Raye
Her hair probably is 4b its just very healthy
*clears throat and leaves chat*
Especially if she uses the denmen brush in the shower 🚿
@@reece6583 to be honest I’ll kinda classify it as a 4a because the coils are pretty big if you get a good look at it but i can see some 4bs in it
Who else’s hair care and styling skills has went 📈📈📈📈📈📈📈📈📈📈📈 since watching him I love him so much and he inspired me to take up hair like if u agree
I love these videos cause I can tell you’re learning. A few answers to your questions and statements:
- you have to use gel and do your edges cause the tiiiiny baby hairs in front often can’t and shouldn’t be straightened. If you put too much heat on them you’ll either burn the skin or damage them leading to no edges
- the twisting after the straightening helps keep the hair straight. It’s like, think of curly hair in humidity, it frizzes and curls right up. But if you put it in a French braid, it wouldn’t be affected as much. Curly hair is just super sensitive and will curl up given the chance

I'm sick of this joke like its so overrated and not even funny

Brad..... your hair looks so F****** amazing, I just can’t even focus on anything else 🤯
Hot comb + blue magic= childhood trauma 😂
I SWEARRR 😿😿
And yet still works for me
@@treniesablunt girl I locked my hair up cause I got tired of combing it 😂
it was the pink lotion for me 😔
@@ujung-ahujung-hae7503 the whole class smell you coming in 😂 hair wet like you got a jerry curl
I love so much that Brad is open and likes to learn, although he is so good at his craft. 😊 This is what a professional does - always aiming to add up to their knowledge and to improve their technique.
So wonderful that he's so interested in doing AA hair the safe way. I love this. Thank you.
Watching brad RAISES my self esteem so much
brad just casually saying he doesn't like edges laid!! those some fighting words! not my fight though lololol love your videos!
I mean I don't really either, some people just look 🤦🏽♀️ sometimes and do a little too much for my liking but that's just my opinion. I just do it so they stay down and nothing too dramatic.
Props to Brad. I was nervous about you reviewing, afro textured hair. I love that you didn’t “other” the hair or use demeaning words/descriptors. Kudos!
to anyone with curly hair: you should love your hair texture always but it's okay to straighten it. 🥺
this sounds so weird cuz I worded it wrong lmfao
The blowout is key! A good blow drying session results in a better a press especially if your flat iron is crappy.
Yep that's it. Gotta get it as straight as possible during blow drying. I learned the hard way 😒
“ who knew you liked it so straight brad” omg I’m dying
I'm 56 and I have 4c low porosity hair the salons always used a hot comb on my hair and then bevel, curl and wrap the comb works miracles in our hair. Hi Brad!!
Can we just talk quickly about that gorgeous shirt on brad! He looks like a snack in this episode. 😅😍🤤 hes beautiful for real
I just came to say that those little texts you send out make my day. I just got one that said “damn look at you. You’re killing it today.” While I was doing my makeup, and it almost made me cry. I’m feeling real down today, so thank you.
Uh that first girl is definitely not 4c lol but ok
She's type 4(4a/3c, maybe a bit of 4b).
I think she said "on type 4 hair" in the caption
Yeah the caption just said Type 4
Right. Soon as I saw the thumbnail I was like... Her hair is NOT 4C.
Not a problem, but it is when clickbait & mis typing cause it can confuse other newly naturals etc.
I’m so very confused on hair typing. I assumed this was maybe 4b/c.
She may not even know herself. If she is only going off what someone told her and not seen the actual chart.
He was so professional and respectful to different hair textures than he may be used to thats how you know he is a good hairstylist. Love Brad for that.
you SHOULD REACT TO MICARAH TEWERS SHE USED NAIL CLIPERS TO CUT HER HAIRRrrrrrrrr
btw I love you vidssss and uuuu sskskks xo
Yes!
Yessss! We need this!!
Yess
I think brad should do a persons hair with 4c hair on his channel.
I would love to see Brad react to natural hair styles (bantu knots, perm rods, flexi rods etc) 😊❤️
girl ! i’m so excited to learn about 4C hair and how to do it, i know that not a lot of beauty schools don’t teach you how to do that kind of hair but i wanna learn SO bad, it just opens up your experience and more clients as well
I'm sorry, I can't help but stare *respectfully* at brad's chest. That whole outfit is fire tho
When he said Dominican blow out......dassit someone get this man some mangu w queso frito and salamiiiiiii. 😂😂😂 that surprised me.
I was just looking for this comment
It surprised me too but he lives in New York haha

@@brendadiazayala5458 Yes you do, I have gone there for a couple of years and they cut hair good and bone straighten it. I love you Dominicans!!!!!!!!!!! (I stopped though because I am natural now.)
See this is why brad is king. We told him he needed to learn so he could properly talk about ALL hair and he did!
We Stan a tolerant king.
“Who knew you liked it so sTrAiGhT Brad..” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
