COUPLE OF POINTS TO MAKE CLEAR :-) ... I smashed that window as furthest from child seats, our eldest wasn't in the car so no chance of unbuckling car seats and didn't want to risk alarm going off for ages and distressing them, tape made it much harder, spark plug ceramic in the corner works, definately should have used the air bag wedge 7:30 in hindsight, insurance would cover glass for £50 excess but as bank holiday there would have been several days to get replaced apparently. No one hurt or worried, no need to call emergency services and after a postage refund all in all it ended up costing £30 so not the end of the world and all sorted now. :-)

The best tip for locked keys is what you discovered yourself - airbags work a treat, the door will flex a lot further than you expect but don’t get too adventurous as you can bend it permanently. Also when trying to smash a window give it some, for some reason people seem to always just give gentle taps hit it and it goes. Just to clarify I work for the emergency services hence the practice, both for locked keys in vehicles and breaking windows 😀

My father got locked out of his car while fishing once. He was a long way in land and while wondering what to do a random guy passing by came to his aid. He wipped out a bit of plastic handing, that you see around boxes sometimes and had the door open in seconds. He smiled politely and said there you go pal. That was fantastic, said my dad, how did you learn that? He smiled and said he stole cars for a living and merrily went on his way. My dad showed me how this was done and i have used it to help several people who found themselves in the same predicament. Can't do it on modern cars however. I once helped a guy who had locked himself out of his Honda Civic while popping into the paper shop on his way to work. His keys where still in the ignition and the car was still running. The car had a rear quarter light that was open and luckily it had electric Windows. I went across the road to a little DIY shop, that was owned by a friend of mine and borrowed a length of half inch quarter round bead and poked it through the rear quarter light and operated the electric window to gain entry. Good dead done for the day i carried on to work. Happy days. Great video Tim.

You had me rolling with the "wait for it" as the keys were clearly dangling in the ignition!
Either way you look at it, Tim, it's time for a beer 🍺.
As usual, well done sir. Tim to the rescue. I'm sure Jo is thrilled to have her car put right again.
Here's my tip: Even though newer vehicles are equipped with chipped keys, I always have an inexpensive spare made that only unlocks the vehicle (no chip), and keep that hidden away somewhere in the vehicle. This is my insurance against inadvertent lock outs and it's saved me numerous times on different vehicles over the years.

In the 90s, I had an old white E-Reg MG Metro, and was travelling to work, up the A12, nr. Colchester in Essex. I heard some knocking and so pulled over into a layby to inspect. Hazard warnings were on etc. In the days before central locking and mobile phones, you could lock the car by pressing down on the black plastic button inside the car and then by holding the door handle release in the up position and then shutting the door, whilst holding it up, negating the use of car keys, and this become muscle memory, second nature, you just didn't think about it. So, as I got out of my car and shut the door (because I didn't want to lose the door to passing traffic), you can guess what happened. I inspected the knocking noise, car still running, and hazards flashing. As I went back to get in, I was flummoxed and then it dawned on me what I had done. I ended up having to leave my car (locked and on tick over), walk across a barbed wire fence, over a v.muddy field to the nearest farmhouse, that would hopefully have a landline. I called my dad, and he drove 14 miles to me, to drop my spare key off. What a fool. Never again.

I applaud your apparent calmness in that kind of tough situation. Fortunately, you were able to get the kiddos out safely. And well don't on taking the DIY approach to replacing the window. Your face at the end was priceless though.

Our roadside assistance company here in the states, AAA - American Automobile Association, uses those inflatable pads. When they get the door pried enough, they slide a metal rod in and they use the metal rod to push the unlock button for the door. In the case of your children being in the car though, breaking the window was the right thing to do. So glad it all worked out.

Top Tip : If one must break a window to get in to grab the keys, you can use one of the small, spring-loaded center punches. They are inexpensive and work very well in the corner of the glass. I first saw one used by fire fighters to get into a vehicle to rescue a pinned occupant.

I once owned a VW golf that occasionally decided to activate central locking at random times. This once happened with keys in the ignition and away from home so no spares. I called called my insurers who sent out a recovery guy that used the air pillow and a plastic wedge. Pump then wedge, then pump some more etc til a big enough gap was achieved to slip in a coat hanger and open the door from the handle inside. Whole thing took less than 10 mins. It was amazing how much the door would bend with the window up. Recovery guy said he hadn't had one break yet! Best of all, it didn't cost me a penny.....

This is a great video after-the-fact! Great ending drama too! Anyway, you covered all of my advice within the video--inflatable bags, roadside assistance service, and porcelain chips--save one: make and stash a spare valet key. A valet key can open the doors even if it cannot start the car (because it isn't chipped), and it is inexpensive.

I have a tip. The xc90 drain plugs for the sunroof are cheap rubber that corroded over time. Change them out before a big rainfall because if you don't then the floorboards of your car will have a foot of water and that causes extensive damage.

When i did exactly same thing and locked our 9 month daughter in the car I used some of that plastic strip that comes wrapped around large parcels. You bend it in half and push it through door seal and pop it over lock button(assumuming it's on top of the door) once around button pull it tight and lift at same time. Worked for me and did it for a few frirends.

No other choice but to smash and will be doing this Tuesday. I also have to take the replacement window out of a car at the junk yard.

I'm glad this worked out! Personally I would have tried popping the lock with a wire coathanger first. You just untwist it so just the hook is left, push the hook into the door near the lock by way of the window lining, catch the mechanism and pop the lock up. Perhaps this doesn't work on newer cars though, we haven't done that since our late 90's model cars.
My mom frequently locked us out. 3 times in one day once. Also once I had to climb through the back window of a windstar, you know, those windows that push out?
I was like 9 and the smallest.
I was wearing a skirt, we were at a hardware store, nobody had or sold a coat hanger nearby, and I needed a hoist to get in. I'm sure the image and the embarrassment is evident. 😂
Wire hangers are rare now of course, but if it works, might be good thing to keep on hand, we try to keep a few because they come in handy for a lot of unusual things.

This might be BS, but I did hear once that If your spare key is at another location you can get them to phone you on a mobile phone and press the ‘unlock’ button next to their phone while you hold your phone next to the car...it’s supposed to unlock through the phone line...worth a shot! 😉

You should be able to disable the auto lock feature using Volvo's VIDA/DICE software, or visiting your dealer if you have a particularly friendly one. Took a surprising amount of force to smash the glass!

    • @volvoxc1937
      @volvoxc1937 5 лет назад

there are two auto-lock features, and the one that locks when reaching 7km/h can be disabled in the menus by owner (mine is). That might be coming into play here as the other auto-lock feature of the key fob is not physically possible to lock the keys in, other than unlock and throw the keys back in an open window (not really locked in then). From the manual : "Automatic re-locking : If the doors are unlocked, the locks will automatically reengage (re-lock) and the
alarm will rearm after 2 minutes unless a door or the tailgate has been opened. NOTE: To help prevent accidentally locking the keys in the vehicle, the central locking system is
designed to unlock the doors immediately if the key is left in the ignition switch, the vehicle is locked using the lock button on the door and the door is then closed." So only if the keys were on front seat (as he said) and central locking was hit (by accident or maybe trying to unlock the back doors?) and front door then closed could this happen.

Had a similar problem recently. A woman had locked her keys and kids in the car during the baking heat. Luckily I had a tool which (the one you've ordered) is apparently designed to break glass; however, the kickback and impact off the first hit jarred my arm. It did eventually break the glass but it wasn't any faster. Best way is to use a large flat head screwdriver and insert this inbetween the window and rubber seal, then just twist. This should squeeze the glass at the weak point making it shatter. No excess force required and no damage to yourself or the vehicle. Happy days!

I went to the inter webs and bought a blank key with just the chip for about $14. It comes with instructions on how to program the chip - "turn car on accessory, pump break four times, stick finger up nose and hum "Dancing Queen" etc. trick was to get it cut. Told the kid at the local hardware store if it didn't work I wouldn't ask for money back. He did it for free and it worked.. Small town in Kentucky. Love your family and projects!

Locked my keys in the boot of my old Freelander 2 and got the AA out. Their data base on accessing the car was wrong and they had to pull down the back seat to fish out the keys. I was over a 100 Mike’s from home. It took a few or those air bags and then bending the door top back once the keys were retrieved. Been much more careful with keys since. Thankfully the Freelander window is much easier to deal with as I had them out a few time with their common fault of lock failures. Sadly not at the time it could have come in handy.

Top tips for de-fogging the front windscreen (if you haven't got a heated windscreen):
1/ Turn heater on full blast
    2/ Turn A/C on
    3/ Turn inside recirculation off
    4/ Crack open front windows
    Also anti- fogging liquid helps.
I can't take credit for this, as someone did a scientific experiment video on RUclips, though I can vouch it does work!

Fair bit of work in that window never mind the cost. Still trying to figure out how a Volvo can lock you out? In my S40 I had the key fail well away from home, eventually it allowed the car to start (2 hours of trying later) but I had to get a new key coded to the car, they cannot recode existing keys, you basically have to throw it away (even though it opens the car and disables the alarm) . I ended up for awhile travelling with 2 keys such was the untimeliness of the key failure. That is why I drive an Audi with a proper key as does my wife and daughter :) I still like Volvo though, some day far from now an XC40 has my name on it :)

I saw ceramic used on a RUclips site once where they just throw a piece at the window and it shatters it. I have those breakers in the car and house. Very valuable. Just noticed you have nobs on the doors. You may be able to thread through those wrappers that parcels come wrapped in. You thread it through and create a loop round the nob and hey presto. That said, I think they make the nobs straight these days so you can't hook it on properly. It's worked for me in the past though if you are gentle with it.

I seem to recall hearing that at least in some cars, the mechanical key will open the doors even without the electronic driving-fob. it might be cheaper to just get a 'door key' made for your car.. tho I don't know much about the model you have specifically, but there might be a 'cheap' option to just get a doors-only key made. I'd contact the dealership to ask.

The easiest thing to do is get a magnetic key box and stick it to the underside of the car. When you have children, they can get locked in the car for many reasons. Some children lock themselves in for fun but when they can’t open the door can get very upset. In my case my then 3 year old son locked himself into the car and let the hand break off “so that he could drive” I didn’t have time to leave him to get anything to break the glass or get the key. But was able to retrieve the key under the car. He is 20 now and we recall the story fondly now.

By far the easiest way to break a toughened car window is with an automatic centre punch. (Couple of quid from Screwfix or similar outlet)
For the sake of my reputation I must add that I know this from car mechanics, and not car theft, being my trade.
There is also the use of a breakglass hammer (as seen on public transport) but who has one of them handy when you need one! Well actually I do, but as it's in my toolbox, which would be in the locked boot so therefore not much use. As I've already got what you're giving away don't add me to a metaphoric hat you draw winners from.

Wouldnt it be easyer to call locksmith ? Althou 20 pounds for a vindow is fine price

Didn't think of a centre punch, plenty of those in the garage. I think my downfall was trying to be clever with taping up the window! Oh well, we learn!

bren106 "By far the easiest way" is to have a hider key that no one but the owners know where it is. I have had one on every vehicle including motorcycles for the last 40 years.

Yes, that would work, I might do the same thing. Where do you put it? (and, where do you live?)

"Andy Taylor" I put it at the front left of my undercarriage and I live at 1 Main Street ,USA in a white house, and the car is a 2010 blue ford Focus Station wagon parked in my driveway with and a sign with arrow that reads hider key underneath.

Automatic centre punch, spark plug porcelain part, ceramic anything from my 1980's motor trade days. Also you should have just called Autoglass and got it on your fully comprehensive insurance, usually £50 excess and they supply and fit and can travel to you. Still good learning experience and chance for a video.

      @TheRestorationCouple  5 лет назад

Yes we have done autoglass for the windscreens in the past but there was quite a wait for this part and if the window had actually turned up next day it would have been fine. Oh well let’s hope there’s no next time!

The tape was stopping you from breaking the glass. You need to use something that focuses the pressure like a Phillips screw driver or an awl and hit it with a hammer. You have to overcome the tension in the glass. Flat tools will generally bounce off it.

    • @TheRestorationCouple
      @TheRestorationCouple  5 лет назад

Yep. I basically laminated it with the tape! Shame as it would have saved the 1000’s of glass bits finding their way everywhere!

slim jim ... either for the interior handle or linkage ... the door opens. locksmith would have that open door open in 10 minutes. (note "slim jim" is a sausage stick in the USA but also a door opening tool slang).

Lots of small pieces of sparkplug is better than one large piece, it's a right pain to replace a car door window, you're bending the glass against the curve and it won't take much before it would brake but it depends on how much play the window has in the frame and door

Not the easiest thing to work on the XC90 but a nice thing for the money you can pick them up for now. And a nice upgrade from the old Mazda. As for tips all I will say is never be tempted to try the old myth of “shorting” anything all you will do on A modern vehicle of any type is spike a BCM/ECU causing a big headache and big bill. Generally still cheaper to smash a window... as for your Volvo key they are a fortune due to the type(assuming it’s the older one piece plastic type)

Probably Cheaper to smash windscreen and then call insurance for a replacement (would be a big "stone chip" lol) although it would be pretty naughty considering the facts lol mine is ruined already and i can rightfully have mine replaced (probably £50 excess)

cheap 9.99 remote locking kit off ebay, keep one fob at home 2nd taped/stuffed into somewhere under the car. cheaper than a volvo key, btw friend was quatoed about 180 up here in york for one when he broke his.
as to the locking kit, if anyone found it and got in, well they would be a car thief, and if a car thief wants to be in your car he's not going to waste time looking for a spare fob anyway... and once in without the real coded key your not starting the engine anyway.

If you are ever in your car and you need to get out in an emergency but your seat belt won’t open. Rip the reversing mirror off and smash the face on your gear stick. The glass will break into large pieces instead of small ones and you can use it to cut your belt free.
