Yeah, it's Black racism pure and simple. Kamala Harris was staring with incredulity as Trump made these crazy claims about the Haitians in Springfield, Ohio. She's heard it all before. "It's the same old show."
@BobCassidy The land on which Springfield, Ohio sits was owned by Native Americans (I think it was Shawnee land, but I’m not entirely sure, someone please correct me if I’m wrong). In 1783 the British signed over the “rights” to the “Ohio Territory” to the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War. The United States subsequently incorporated Ohio into an entity called the “Northwestern Territories”. The Native American tribes living in the area formed a political coalition called the “Western Confederacy”. In 1795 the Western Confederacy was coerced (by threat of violence) to sign the Treaty of Greenville which granted substantial tracts of land to the U.S. When Springfield, OH was founded in 1801 it was done so by colonists who had obtained rights to the land via the threat of government sanctioned violence against the Native inhabitants. A non-native population entered the area and forcibly evicted the native population without the consent of the natives. The person who was interviewed doesn’t like the idea that people who aren’t from a particular area can “replace” the native population of an area. The irony is that’s exactly how the town she lived in was founded. It’s pretty hypocritical and demonstrative of a lack of introspection.
@@BobCassidy I generally don’t really like to apply “right” or “wrong” to people from the past because our modern morality is much different than theirs. I believe that mankind has gotten more compassionate, gentler, and more considerate throughout the ark of history. I don’t think it’s particularly useful to, using the lens of our modern sensibilities, condemn figures from the past who acted in a manner which we would deem inappropriate but at the time was perfectly acceptable. I think almost everyone alive (even the native Americans who 100% fought wars of conquest against each other) in 1800 would see what the settlers did (taking land by force) as perfectly legitimate. I think the general consensus in the post WW2 world has been the opposite - that warfare for the purpose of territorial expansion / conquest is never permissible. I’m not trying to be rude or dismissive at all, I just genuinely don’t see the benefit in applying “right” or “wrong” applying sensibilities and attitudes that didn’t exist at the time the occurrences in discussion happened.
@@valdal3219 I’m not sure what you’re getting at. I don’t think it’s useful to use modern moral sentiment to judge people from the past because I think it’s kind of silly to judge people by a moral standard they were unaware of. I have no problem with calling actions wrong or immoral, but I don’t like taking the leap to calling the person wrong or immoral because the society in which they lived had a much different understanding and practice of morality to our own. I think all that does is ensure that future generations will castigate us for not conforming to a moral doctrine that didn’t exist in our time.
I didn't hear any residents complaining about the landlords price gouging the rent or the companies doing the hiring of the immigrants. And funny how the immigrant workers sound like they are more reliable than Americans to do the jobs. I don't have answers to these issues, but can we at least look at the true sources of the issues?
Yea, as someone that lives in the area of Austin Texas, the city and its surrounding area exploded in size from 2018-2023. Those 'immigrants', people from all over America. Housing prices are up 50%+. And Texas is pretty much a 'build all you want wherever you want' state, and yet prices still skyrocketed. It's pretty much the same in most places in the US. There are companies like RealPage that manage rents across the country and have been, if the US department of Justice is to be believed, a large criminal conspiracy to collude and rise rent prices across the US. It's always much easier to blame immigrants (and this massive fast growth is problematic) then look at the problems happening everywhere that are affecting Americans due to corporate greed.
Respect the father of Aiden Clark and his memory and not use him to politicize this crap. That's where it started and it needs to END here. Stop these urban legends. Stop the madness.
If immigration is legal in the U.S.A., and people immigrate legally, the challenges that come, are not issues for politicians to use as points of persecution. There is no "us vs. them", if those participating in our communities are legally participating. It's all, "us". Problem solving can be done by "us" and for "us". Since petroleum began being extracted in Venezuela in the 30s and until the 70s, Americans lived in gated communities. They had everything they needed inside the community. They spoke English following American studies. They never adapted to the Venezuelan culture and language. Lets be conscious of what Americans do in other countries, especially now that so many American retirees go to live in other more affordable countries. They form their own communities and almost never learn the language of the country.
There probably is a legit supply and demand mismatch too for housing that is also driving up prices, but that's fixable. Springfield can easily build their way out of it if their legacy residents don't trip over themselves and NIMBY the whole thing. Springfield's population in 1960 was 82,000, compared to 58,000 in 2020. This is a matter of fixing up boarded up properties, and rebuilding housing on plots where abandoned homes have been torn down.
Springfield, Ohio's population in 1960 was over 82,000. By 2020 it was 58,000. Even a 25 percent population increase due to immigration brings it nowhere near its past population. The city can handle the new arrivals. Sure, boarded up houses need to be restored to match housing supply with the higher demand. And more teachers need to be hired for the schools, possibly restoring schools that were shuttered as population declined over the years. But the city can accommodate this larger population because it has. If anything, this issue underscores the need for comprehensive immigration reform -- and that reform would include Federal support to communities to handle the upfront, short-term expenses of hiring teachers, subsidizing new housing construction, etc. In the long term, this is not even an expense -- Uncle Sam and the city of Springfield will benefit far more than the expenses that are being incurred now. As we have seen with every generation of poor economic migrants that have come to America in the past, these immigrants, their children, and their children's children will more than repay any upfront investment made through their contributions to the US economy.
Thank you for being an anti racist and seeing this so call immigration issue as dividing the country. However, refusing to unknownledge the destabilization of foreign countries by the U.S.

A well done summary of this story. It covers so many aspects of the current human condition; Dying city brings back businesses that require a rapid influx of workers, housing and city resources become affected, crisis event occurs, social media and narcissistic politicians take advantage. So sad.
No one is talking about how the companies in Ohio who brought in thousands of Haitians failed to consider the economic and social consequences of this plan. As usual, they were strictly interested in the bottom line
I'm the last person to stick up for corporate businesses, but it's on the city. They bring in business. They know who sets up shop. They approve everything. They know what that entails. It's their responsibility to plan for and adjust for whatever social or economic issues it brings. Rent increases aren't only happening in Springfield OH. It's happening everywhere. Springfield just happens to have a perfect scapegoat and Vance has a perfect example to back up his empty claims. Vance was blaming rent increases on immigrants at the RNC, it's almost like this was planned in advance. To give the example of Springfield to back up hia idiotic proposal that Immigrants are the source of all of your ills. That has been the narrative of the entire campaign. Blame everything on immigrants. It's nonsense. He expects everyone to look at Springfields rent problems and conclude that because an influx of people caused rents to spike, that must be the case across the US. But if it weren't Haitians, it would have to be someone else moving to Springfield to cause the same effect. If it wasn't someone else, then there would be no new business and the town would continue to decline. He expects everyone to look at a tragic accident and condemn an entire population for the mistake of one person. He manufactured this entire thing and Springfield is paying for it. He didn't just use the death of a child for his political gain, he used the entire town.
@@tripe2237 It's also on the medical centre to recruit doctors and RNs and physician assistants and so forth who can communicate in Haitian or French, if a sizable portion of the Haitians speak pretty standard French. Maybe, they bring family members and neighbours and even their children and grandchildren with them to medical appointments so the medical personnel can speak with them properly at no cost. @@dinkster1729 Right. It's growing pains for the city. Every city has delt with these things in the past. Adjust for the population. Why is it that 1970's Springfield was able to deal with that number of people but 2024 Springfield can't? The answer is it can. They just have to plan for it and make adjustments. Unfortunately, it's more politically convenient for some people to make the problems worse or make them seem as bad as possible. Exactly. Or, maybe, recruit some French-speaking medical personnel and teachers. Set up bilingual programmes in the schools. Their ability to speak French may be these students' greatest assets. Also, teach them English, of course.
Big opportunity here for government to do some good. Survey employers from the Springfield-like communities of the country, find out who needs a few good employees, then back at the border, if you're going to admit these people anyway, send a manageable number spread out across the country, with the job lead in hand, and the employers ready to receive them. Don't allow 20,000 to one place. Instead, send 500 spread amongst 40 Springfields. Put stipulations on their border entry that they must go where they're setup to be received.
It's very noticeable that at no point did you engage with Trump and Vance having no issue with spreading a vile and racist lie that has no actual evidence from Springfield to back it up.

"no where on the planet is it acceptable for another culture to create a majority population by replacing the native population" Is that so, Ms. White Resident of North America??
So if we look at the timeline that’s being pointed out, the town went into decline during Obama, in 2017 (Trump administration) businesses started setting up shop creating jobs. During this time Haiti was experiencing terrible natural disasters like devastating earthquakes and hurricanes forcing them to lose their homes and that is why they came to the states. They did not leave Haiti to specifically work in Springfield. But as more immigrants come from Haiti because of the civil and governmental unrest that came out of the poverty from the natural disasters, they’ve searched for places where other Haitians live so they joined their friends, families and similar culture, not necessarily because of the jobs. If you’re going to report on this, you should give full context. You are somewhat correct in that it did cause a housing and resource shortage for the existing residents, and those residents do have a right to be upset that they are being displaced and veterans can’t get resources because they are having to wait in line behind the folks who have TPS. Please do the right thing, abs share the full context when acting as a journalist. Americans depend on you to do so in order to make informed decisions instead of conjecture that can lead to continued misinformation.

Yeah, it's Black racism pure and simple. Kamala Harris was staring with incredulity as Trump made these crazy claims about the Haitians in Springfield, Ohio. She's heard it all before. "It's the same old show."
We know why.
did I hear correctly that locals weren't cool with others "invading" or replacing the "native population"?
Native Americans entered the chat.
I went by a campus demonstration for gaza and a sign read “not on stolen land”. Oh the irony.
@BobCassidy
The land on which Springfield, Ohio sits was owned by Native Americans (I think it was Shawnee land, but I’m not entirely sure, someone please correct me if I’m wrong).

America's melting pot is not without challenges. Let's meet those challenges with govt. help, not baiting.
This world is a competition over limited resources. Us vs them is sometimes useful.

Its amazing to me, in a dark way, how willing some people are to loosen their own screws.
REITs are raising rental costs, not immigrants. Blame Wall Street.
This hurt my heart

Immigration creates waves. It always has everywhere. How you react is up to you, right?
So... Always following Free Market theory is now wrong? Which is it Conservatives?

You are somewhat correct in that it did cause a housing and resource shortage for the existing residents, and those residents do have a right to be upset that they are being displaced and veterans can’t get resources because they are having to wait in line behind the folks who have TPS.
