  • It's why many golfers slice and struggle to hit farther, straighter drives. Starting your downswing with hip turn brings in many problems that cause higher scores. For one, you have a greater chance of swinging over the top when you. Second, you miss out on using the hips as a power source to hit the ball much farther. One of the most profound things I learned about driving the ball well was slowing down my hip turn. It goes against everything you hear in the golf swing, but it's changes everything. This golf tip shows you how to use your hips in the correct sequence to drive farther and straighter.

    This is exactly why I try to ignore the hips completely in my swing. Some time ago Tom you mentioned in the members area of your online golf school that if we just focus on turning the shoulders properly the hips and legs will take care of themselves. When I do that with the driver, I can smash it 280 plus with good weather and relatively dry ground.

      PS By the way, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them.
      If you've not already joined, have you considered enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level? That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying/resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise, plus advanced level instruction, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. The value in terms of what you get for the low price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet.
      And if you would like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that is delivering the referenced results.
      As you are now coming to understand, one does not need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought.

    Great explanation. It was hard to find info about this. I picked up golf again after about ten years off and I was pulling the driver bad then hitting some wild cuts, with random great drives here and there. I’m flexible and tall with really long arms, and after filming myself for some time, I could see my hips were beating my arms to the ball by a lot. I’ve been focusing on keeping the hips a little more still on the downswing and starting the downswing with my arms. It’s made a huge difference in consistency and even added a few yards of carry.

    I suffered from the “fire the hips first” mania and caused me to do the exact thing you explained in this video. Got some lessons and my teacher told me to start the downswing with my arms and “keep my hips still” as long as I could as a feel. Never been hitting better. It’s all about adjusting to your swing faults. Great video. Would love to see your take on the new and actual golf swing mania “SHALLOW THE CLUB”.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Месяц назад +1

      Nice job!!
      When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help in overcoming this, correctly engaging their hips and fixing their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition.
      The move you are likely referring to is a feature of a two-plane type of motion that has the golfer taking the club straight back off the ball and then lifting it, thereby setting the arms on a different plane than the shoulders. This necessitates a shallowing move in order to get the club on a good downswing path. What I teach is a one-plane motion in which the club takes essentially the same path back and through, tracing the natural geometry of the inclined swing circle preestablished at address. It's a very centered, powerful, body-friendly, low-maintenance motion.
      Taking it straight back is a disconnecting move that puts the hands and club in the "Zone of Uncertainty". They don't know what to do from there. Do they crash straight back down in an effort to hit at the ball? Do they drop down and try to find that perfect "slot" each and every swing? Do they get stuck behind us by overcompensating? In other words, we disrupt the natural geometry of the swing preestablished at address when we force the club out and up - or, conversely, snatch/roll it to the inside - thereby taking it off the plane of that inclined circle. Instead, why not just put them in the "slot" to begin with and preset the ideal downswing path before it even happens?!
      While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

    This is a great video! When my driver starts going everywhere except straight, I will remember how my swing was on the last swing. 9 out of 10 times, my hips jump out in front before my upper body which leads to the dreaded "Over the TOP"! Excellent !! Glad to hear such an advice! Everybody try to lead weekenders to turn the hips as fast as possible. I don’t think it helps. Your colleague Malaska used to say that turning the hips is a fact not a deliberate motion. Sometimes I try not to turn the hips at the driving range and when I’m filmed you can see they eventually turn ( there’s what you feel vs what you do). However, they turn following the whole swing motion not by initiating it and the gain of power and consistency is huge. Bravo monsieur !

      Thanks - I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you!!
      You are absolutely correct. When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When rotated too early, all bets are off. Sadly, the "firing the hips" move is routinely either improperly conveyed or misinterpreted, and as a result far too many amateur golfers are afflicted with a premature spinout of the hips in the downswing - even as early as in the transition. We see it all the time with paths that are steep and/or routed across the ball from the outside, causing a host of poor impact conditions and undesirable shots.
      I appreciate your message and support!!

    My instructor has said the same thing. He noticed that I was moving my right foot way too early and as a result my hips were moving laterally too quickly. Watching this video just solidified everything! I still struggle sometimes but if I feel like I’m keeping my right foot planted for as long as possible, then I start to actually hit my drives decently

      Thanks Clyde - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
      I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally love the feel as well as how they help to keep my hands quiet through the zone.
      Now, having said that, I recently purchased a new set of PXG's, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently.
      Having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf.

This last video is what I’ve been looking for as I was firing my hips too much thinking that it’s the right thing to do. I was slicing my driver and didn’t know why. Tom, I’ve followed your swing lessons for a couple of yrs with success. Recently I started opening my stance with all of my clubs and I feel like I get through the ball more powerfully and more consistent (I’m 62 yrs old). I can even hit a draw this way. Does this make any sense? I’d like to see a video on this at some point.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  10 месяцев назад +2

      It does make sense. Consider that in the swing system I teach, we flare both feet outward 10-20 degrees in our setup to facilitate the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power move that also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If one were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then their hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action can cause a variety of path issues and/or also place strain on the lead knee and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to move laterally and turn through into the finish but will be fighting the body in the process.
      So, if an open stance performs well for you, then I have no issue with it as long as it doesn't affect your alignment.
      By the way, you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. As touched upon above, it all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
      Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Keep up the great work!

    Hi Tom! I’ve also found another way of achieving “quiet hips”…put the trail foot slightly back. It prevents the opening of the hips or aggressive swinging (which promotes early firing of the hips).
    If you tried to do either of those while your trail foot is set back, you will fall over in the follow through of the swing.
    Plus a bonus of the trail foot being set back is the baby draws in the drives 😉

    That is definitely my problem Tom. I believe I fire the hips first which causes an over-the-top, outside to in, or very steep club path. Which leads to slices and/or snap hooks. What would a good drill be to create muscle memory to delay the hips from firing early?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  10 месяцев назад

      You're definitely not alone, and nice job recognizing that in your swing!
      The lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. I can’t separate hips/torso with driver, so think this may be worth trying. Gotten a few lessons and he says, “swing out to the right” or he puts an obstacle inside the ball for me to try to miss. It’s not clicking at all. Irons aren’t what they were either, but manageable. Question, if you’re keeping your right foot down, is there any intentional weight transfer? Thanks for the video, subbed!

      Welcome to "the dark side", Todd, where the spoils of "conventional" instruction - chronic inconsistency, physical pain, and endless frustration - yield to the fruits of body-friendly enjoyment of this great game for a lifetime. 😎
      The notion of a “weight” shift in the golf swing has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. In fact, here is Jack Nicklaus on weight shift: "I don't believe in a lateral shift," says Nicklaus. "Of course not. I believe in staying on the ball." Asked what he thinks about teachers who advocate a weight shift, he answers, "They don't know how to play." Now, there is certainly an allowance for a transfer of “pressure” into the trail side. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club back and around us during the takeaway and backswing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thus our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful motion.
      While there are certainly plenty of videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

I noticed even though im firing with my shoulders the hips automatically clear!

      Nice job figuring that out!
      When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. I’ve read that one should start transferring the weight from the right foot to the left foot before completion of the backswing. Some say by a slight fall to the left first. I find that hard to do. Tom, what in your view starts the downswing? What actually starts the transition from backswing to downswing?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Paul,
      We can read, watch, and listen to a lot of stuff in the realm of golf "instruction", and that will make our understanding of swing mechanics about as clear as mud. (Perhaps that's what Mr. Hogan meant when he said "the secret's in the dirt"....? 😎)
      First of all, the need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point.
      Now, having settled that, how to initiate the downswing is a loaded question because it is so dependent on individual tendencies that I cannot give a generalized answer. If I tell you that it's a lateral hip slide but your downswing already naturally has sufficient forward force, then you'll hit pushes and/or hooks all day long, and if I tell you to rotate your hips but you are already naturally applying enough outward force, then your destination is pull/slice city! I could also say the shoulders, or dropping the hands, or getting the lead arm off the chest, or rolling your trail foot targetward, or increasing pressure into the lead leg, etc. Whew! You get what I'm saying, right?....
      This is why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.

    I think what this comes down to is the disconnect and subjectivity of feel to reality. What feels like starting with your hips can differ greatly from person to person for any variety of reasons. I definitely did worse when i followed an online video of firing with hips but I think my outcome wasnt what they were intending

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  10 месяцев назад

When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off.
      As a related example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. @johnsahhar7599 10 месяцев назад

      Tom, I think the lateral targetward action you reference is a very small shift but it prevents the dreaded spin out. In my experience, when I look at good swings in slow motion, the targetward shift allows the upper trail arm and elbow to stay on the trail rib cage and come through the hitting/delivery area without being ahead of the body (pulls, hooks and maybe last second attempts to hold the face off from closing) or behind the chest and trail hip (pushes and slices and maybe flips to try and save the shot). You could also say this allows for more centeredness and balance and allows the chest to cover the ball better at impact. The point for me that is reinforced is that when the shoulders work properly, the hips don't lurch forward to start the down swing and the trail arm, elbow and hips tend to fall into place when the tempo is good. Not firing the hips leads to better sequence. Another great video. Thank you. @@SagutoGolf

    @sagutogolf Tom, I'm assuming this is more for the non S&T crowd? For us that follow you, if your weight is forward (and more for the driver) the delayed hips is built in, correct?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  10 месяцев назад +1

      Actually, everything I teach here is aligned with the Stack and Tilt system, but yes - we do need to keep the general audience in mind. For example, in S&T the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line.
      It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - which again are fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my RUclips content.

    Do I need to flip the wrist for driver to hit up or hold the shaft down just like Iron you have talked about?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 месяцев назад

      NO! It's the same action as with the irons.
      I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder/armpit), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact.
      So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )
      For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice have caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver.

      I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you, Jose', and I hope it performs well when you put it into practice!
      Yes - overactive legs can certainly create swing path and impact problems. Consider that when kicking a soccer ball the trail leg approaches the ball from the inside while the lead leg provides a stable, solid impact zone for your trail foot to consistently and powerfully strike the ball. In the golf swing the club approaches the ball from the inside while the legs provide stability to keep the swing's low point intact. If you "fire" your legs prematurely, then impact and shot shape will be inconsistent at best. Instead, use those powerful legs to your advantage by deploying them properly and in the correct sequence.

      That absolutely still applies, Steve! I always look forward to your driver advice. Thanks to you, it's no longer the worst club in my bag (that would be my 3 wood 😆). I seem to recall you saying a long time ago that you should also delay hip turn slightly when using irons. Do I have that right?
    Also, slightly off-topic, but when you set up your driver shot, do you set up with the club head centered on the ball, or off the toe? I've heard that the latter can help you hit it straighter - somehow your body adjusts on the downswing so that you actually hit it flush - but I have yet to try it.

      As for driver setup, I align the ball with the center of the clubface because I am confident it will return to the same spot on the way down. However, I have heard of some folks placing it more towards the toe while others say more towards the heel. Anyway, it's simple enough to experiment with at the range, so why not try it and see what works best for you?

      Having said that, if you already have the proper downswing action then this lesson probably does not apply to you, and that is perfectly fine. You see, I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. Actually, Robert, here is a video from my channel's old archives featuring Mr. Hogan speaking about this: ruclips.net/video/iejRWhuB7y8/видео.html
      Have a look at how much his hips are moving laterally. This targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Here are a couple of lesson videos specific to this topic:
      - ruclips.net/video/dB4ItR3guGU/видео.html
      - ruclips.net/video/I5XYgKopTb4/видео.html
      When properly deployed in the correct sequencing, our hips are a tremendous source of power. When rotated too early, all bets are off.
      Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  4 месяца назад +1

      Not something I think about, Bill, as a manufactured "squatting" move is not a necessary component of this swing system. If the "leveraging of the ground" doesn't happen on autopilot, then the "feel" we like to ingrain is tucking the butt under the hips through the zone, which causes the belt buckle to raise up a few inches from pre- to post-impact. It can be likened to a high jumper pushing off his or her lead leg as they propel themselves upward and over the bar. This releases the spine from flexion to extension - a very powerful move.

    My personal opinion is that most amateurs need to follow the advice in this video. Most people are not using the arms and shoulders enough and are using their hips too much and too soon. Stabilize the lower body in transition and swing down more aggressively. The hips will react to the swinging arms and turn through contact where the power is needed. The exception to this is the better player who has fully developed the speed of their arm and wrist action. These players are prone to hooking and may benefit from a more aggressive hip action early in the downswing.

      Hi Martin,
      It's not a matter of "who" said it; it really comes down to "how" they actually did it. For example, a comment on this same video from Edward stated: "I use to have the same issue, and saw Moe Norman obsess over keeping the right foot planted until after the swing, changed my game for the better."
Yes, you can start with the hips, but not simply by spinning them! The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews.

    ok Tom...I get what you are saying and love your teaching....however when I look at slow motion of Ben Hogan he sure looks like his first move in transition is to shift his hips ever so slightly forward and the arms are not moving....are my eyes deceiving me? Is the hips first move something that only elite players can execute correctly after 10000 hours of practice?

      No - your eyes are not deceiving you, and it is actually a very accurate observation!
(Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while the head - and thus the swing center - remains in place.) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition.
      It is important to understand that I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. @@SagutoGolf Hi Tom
      Thanks for the extensive response. I joined your online school the other day.
      I totally get what you are saying and doing. You are the best that I have come across at articulating a simple repeatable swing that lets you enjoy the game of golf. Your method and template totally resonate with me. Keep up the good work!!

      No need for confusion. When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. @@SagutoGolf By the way, I’m bombing it with the Lagshot driver, so much so that I’m thinking of using it on the course! I seem to hit it better than my real drivers. Strange. Maybe you could do a video about exactly what the Lagshot trainers do for us. I can tell you that my backswing has a much slower tempo with the Lagshot driver. Then I whip it down into the ball and BOOM. Is this device trying to teach us to take that same tempo and whip feel to the real driver? Hmm…. Anyway, I’m really surprised at the capacity of this driver to hit bombs.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  10 месяцев назад

      Yes, Kenneth - this swing key also applies to the irons. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ruclips.net/video/o0xscMyN3v8/видео.html

    So Tom, isn’t that a result of not using the ground to start the downswing? It seems like all of the pros push into their lead foot keeping the body stable into the swing and keeping their hips driving the swing forward and pushing up, not spinning in a circle. Bryson and Rory have some great videos showing how to get the power from the ground.

    • @SagutoGolf

      Hi Mike,
      The lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. (Yes - one "feel" for accomplishing this is to increase pressure into the lead leg/foot at the transition.) Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Here are a couple of lesson videos specific to this topic:
