This week, we visit a refreshingly different HDB home in Canberra. Homeowners Shaun and Michelle were inspired after staying at a popular tropical brutalist resort in Bali (The Slow) and really liked the raw yet warm vibes that they wanted to take back home. It's a recent trend, but tropical brutalism has been gaining traction as while the raw concrete vibes are something many people like, that cold and bare finishing makes the space feel somewhat less homely - and the inclusion of plants goes a long way to making it warmer and feeling like a home.
There are many details in their home, but the first that you'd notice is the concrete wind blocks as you enter the apartment. It's a good screen for some privacy, yet open so that the space still feels spacious. These blocks were made by hand in the factory and specially measured as well to fit in the live-edged timber table.
Shaun and Michelle also wanted an open plan kitchen with an island, and opted for open shelving as well despite the fact that it required more maintenance! The wind blocks design actually flows through into the bedroom as well, as it acts as a backdrop to the vanity area. The master bathroom also employs fluted glass to create a more open nature to the bedroom too.
Special thanks to Shaun and Michelle for opening up their beautiful home, for more details on their home please visit: / theheartlandcave

Definitely coz I am a fan of concrete, marble and minimalism
Absolutely. Its kinda like back to basics
no. fake looking.
My dream home does not have a garage (because I think they just encourage hoarding of excess stuff) but I would design in a carport with a decorative cement block passageway to play with light and the breeze and add texture.
I love the feel of the house. It's the first time I have heard of brutalist look and I'm really intrigued by it.
Really glad you think so! It's rare to find such a style that's also balanced with some warmth in the home 😀
1:43 For those who don't know, bomb shelters are required by Singapore's building code since 1996.
Usually, people just use this as a storage room.
True!
Ah, thanks. I was like what?
Brutalist is rarely seen in Singapore. When I go home to Malaysia I try to visit the many brutalist style cafes in Penang / KL. 2 public and national universities in Msia are brutalist in design too - saves on maintenance (no painting needed and looks good with age). Love their appreciation for the design style, and that balcony view!!!!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
mind sharing which unis you're referring to? :)
Brutalist architecture often feature unpainted concrete walls too e.g. Paris' CDG airport's Terminal 1, London's Nat'l Theatre but I heard Singapore building codes makes it compulsory for walls to be painted though?
@@yingqiantan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Im pretty sure!
awww rare for an HDB apartment to adopt the brutalist look and they did it so well! now i want to go to the Slow too T_T
i also like how the doggo doubles up as a ... dry mop hehe
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The $90k reno is brutal
If you got the money, don't cheap out on your sacred home.
@@Uwu-0-0-0 got extra cash to burn on a HDB and don't mind eating into profit margin when house is sold then go for it
Is this a lot for a flat Reno? Seems quite cheep for 5 rooms…
Haha I see what you did there. $90K is okay for what was achieved!
for a 1300sft space, it's fairly reasonable.
This is so different, very nice resort chill feel. First time hearing brutalist look. Nice home to chill & relax after a long day at work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
They achieved their goal the home is beautiful and still warm even with all that concrete
Glad you like it ! Thanks for watching!
It's misty because of the trees opposite. You'll definitely miss the morning dew when there are plans to build more BTO projects hahaha!
😂 Hence the appreciating as long as it's there!
The idea of the 2 sets of full height wooden panels to hide the unsightly bomb shelter as well as to create extra storage areas on the opposite side creates a warm entrance to the house. The ventilated and concrete consoles are nice play of earthly materials. And the use of natural plants to soften the brutalist look is definitely welcomed. The apartment will look great once the plants grow out and some plant creepers will definitely help reduce the bare vertical concrete partitions.
Well said! Love your comment on the plants growing out, hopefully over time it would help break that bare look!
Something different and yet familiar. Tropical Brutalist is a new term for me. Thank you for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is not my personal style but I admire designs that are not cookie cutter and this is definitely one. Everything looks seamless and streamlined. Well done.
Thank you, Hannah! 😁
This is really a very practical and peaceful-vibe house. I will choose this
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Charming home, charming couple.
Absolutely charming all around! 😊
Love it! Never knew brutalism could extend to interior design :)
I know, really eye opening!
Haha! Tropical Brutalist may be the new industrial 2.0. Jokes aside, HDB houses in its bare basic form looks the most brutalist to me 😅. When elements are added for aesthetics over function, it kinda goes against the ethos of a Brutalist design.
Well, I guess Brutalism has now been rebranded and evolved into something entirely diff from its roots. A design style that came about due to poverty is now glamorised. Interesting to see this new trend.
It's also quite a humble architecture due to the cost savings. Brutalist architecture also lets in less sunlight, which in turn reduces heat within the building and so uses less air-conditioning. This is in contrast to the modern glass exterior in office buildings we see today where the central AC has to be blasted all day long and it can still be warm at times.
Glad they managed to pull off the brutalist look with the limited space.
This place is great! I really enjoy brutalist style. My home is actually MCM (which is under renovation). There was an odd add-on in the back in the early 70s that will be redone. I was considering doing this interior in brutalist style. The floors throughout the home are already concrete so I thought about maybe adding more concrete elements into add-on. I am not adding concrete into the original part of the home as I want to keep it true to MCM style it would have had when it was built, but since the back portion isn't original, I don't mind doing something different there. And I have always thought that brutalist meshed well with MCM so I don't think it would look out of place.
The doge has separation anxiety ❤❤
Very unique home
Lovely home, lovely couple.
Thank you so much Clifton! ☺️
this is beautiful.......
Glad you like it!
My kind of style, well done!
Thank you for watching 😍
the ceiling seems unusually lofty for a hdb. would have ended up quite claustrophobic going with the brutalist look. overall it's quite well done. i would have gone with real wood veneer for the doors instead of laminate, and a real cast concrete 'tv console' instead of cement plastered one, it would have gotten closer to actual brutalist effect. moreover, your dog wouldn't be able to cause any scratch on it. ha
Great feedback! Inspiration for others seeing this comment 😎
Hdb may not approve of cast concrete because of the load!
@@ashleytong818 not to worry. for TV console in solid concrete low mid density, it's within HDB floor loading limitation. as long as we are not doing a cast concrete bed
Love the concept of how they did to their master bedroom. Just wondering where is their access point for the common toilet. Seems like they have to also access through their master bedroom
This is so good!
Thanks for watching!
@@StackedHomes I binged watched your content last night. I enjoyed every single second!!!
You deserve the sub!
Ah.. The concrete block placement is a great inspo. I'd change it to glass block, though. 💜
That's a great idea!
Did they hacked down the walls of the master & common toilet to combine into one?
Looks very well done. Was the interior echoey?
Extremely cosy...
Thanks for watching!
Evergrande unfinished building should be decor ed like this
Hahaha good idea!
Very nice house.
It is! Thanks for watching!
too cold for my liking even with their adjustments to the typical style. but they have done a really good job, nice aesthetic feel around the house
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Your ceilings are really high it seems. Canberra is a nice place. :)
Thank you for your kind words!
love the wind blocks, but that is such a chore to keep clean. how do they do it? or they just dont bother to clean it at all?
I suppose the grey concrete makes the dust a lot harder to spot. Probably use a feather duster once in a while!
Really really well done..
Glad you like it!
Did they hack the wall between Room 2 and Master bed room? and Room 2 becomes the bed room and Master room became the vanity area + wardrobe?
just look at the view from the balcony
Great view right? 😁
@@StackedHomes Worth a million I guess
Where is Ruben? he has gone missing
Reuben's on break now 😊
Hey not sure if i will get a reply. But may I know where did the owners get the console behind their Sofa? The one they use to put their plants paintings.
where are her pants from :o its so pretty
LOVE IT! is this the top floor? the ceiling looks especially high
Thanks for watching 🥰
What happens if both owners need to go to the toilet? Also do guests have to access the master bedroom to use the toilet?
The concrete block is nice until you need to dust the dust off.
Beautiful home! It has its unique character. Which ID did you go to?
Hi there, Gail! You can check out their ID with this link:

very original!
It is ! Thanks for watching!
Love the house but I hate this video. I need to see more parts of the house. Lovely house!
How does the piping for the sink in the bedroom works?
I love this house! Can share the ID/Contractor?
Thanks for watching, Nisa 🥰 Their ID is Open Studio! 😉
What’s with the dog? 🐕
Hi shaun and michelle, i really love the whole look of your house. I hope youre reasing this! I would like to get a similar dining table fr my first ever home w my husband. May i know where it is from?
@Shaun yes please would likek to know more details too!
I’d like to recommend grey and sanders. You can choose the slab of wood, so it’s unique to you. They have curves that flows naturally. Its my favourite piece! It’s also solid wood :-) hope it helps!!
@@cherylmok4274 ooOoo thank you so much!🙏🏽
I hear from a carpenter friend that slabs tend to crack over time so do be prepared for that!
@@emorcen oh rlly! I’ve been using for a few years now, doing good. Maybe it’ll crack after 10-20 years idk?
hi, what is the breed of the dog
Hi Michelle, you are very chio.
what is the name of this paint colour? really random but it'll be awesome if the owners can share this :)
they hacked all 3 rooms?
Dark look
Thanks for sharing!
may i know who is the interior designer?

🚫 Concrete blocks & concrete wall in kitchen takes away the warmth in this otherwise comfy home for young couple !
Brutalist design were used after WWII due to widespread poverty in many nations !
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I suppose it can have its charm, like how Terrazzo tiles were made from discarded chips from marble slabs and it became a thing!
Dog so strong, he can eat concrete.
Hahaha
brutalism is making a comeback, but I think it can consume comfort and individuality (so harsh!) and it doesn't weather well in our climate. the homeowners were smart to dip toes in and not go head-first.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
im sorry did she say BOMB SHELTER?
Part of Singapore HDB housing requirements.
You should arrange so each video is minimum 8 mins so you can set "mid roll ads" and get more adsense money.
Thanks for your suggestion! 😀
Yes it’s too short. Not enough of it!
@@StackedHomes No please don't change your format, it's perfect the way it is!
I bet bailey has left lots of stinky little 'stories' around the house.
Haha got to make sure they're well trained before committing to porous materials 😂
they gave up an entire room to have double sinks and walk in wardrobe. not sure if they are planning to have kids but they should have bought a 4 room instead
Hey! Well to each their own, perhaps they'd put back the bedroom later on 😌
@@StackedHomes judging by the extensive renovation that includes wall removal and water piping . it's unlikely they will ever change. 5 rooms are an increasing scarcity and anyone who has kids will be able to understand how much space a larger family needs as opposed to a childless couple. I'm not sure how old you are in giving me a reply that's says "to each his own" but I'm just saying that singapore has limited resources and with hdb being a public good, we should consider about needs vs aspirations. consequently it this is a private condo then fair enough they paid for it.
@@libiskit you don't like, then don't buy the house resale la. You're entirely free to reno the house however you want if you buy it.
@@davidngqkalone88 the point is dont bid for a 5 room if you don't intend to have kids since HDB is a subsided good. Saying 'don't like then don't buy' is not addressing my point , because the design in itself is nice- just that they could clearly achieved that w a 4 or even a 3 room apartment
@@libiskit it's a free market, people are free to buy what they want. take that up with the government if you really believe it to be the case, and if enough people agree with you then it will be passed as a law.
You saying that only couples who want kids should have big flats is implying that certain groups should have preferential rights over others, which is a troublesome narrative.
Maybe they bought the flat with the intention of having kids later down the road? That's entirely up to them. They can afford 90k reno what's to stop them from reno the house again in future?
It's so gloomy and dark and dull. For 90k it's really dumb. Its very uncomfortable feeling and doesn't feel like a home at all. But as long as they're happy.
Thanks for sharing Amos! There is quite a bit of work to be done, but as you said - to each their own!
Maybe that’s why the dog felt stress and started chewing concrete.
i prefer it to be mute and no talking 🤢why i hate some accents its so horrible i dont want to hate
