That long section of shaft should be made of collapsible shaft. JIC.

I installed a Uni-Steer Rack & Pinion 12 years ago (when they were much cheaper) in my 68 Fastback. I then sold the original steering box, ram, ram bracket, control-valve, inner and outer tie-rods, idler arm, center-link, rag-joint, and small hoses for $250. I was able to use the OEM pump. The set-up works like a charm and it weighs much less than what it replaced. It is a vast improvement over FoMoCo / Bendix set-up. The rack is actually a GM piece of the mid-1980's, but with unique bracketry--which I slightly modified and reinforced. The only electronics I have on my FB is the MSD Box of the mid 1990's--when they were still made in the USA. Finally, allow me to suggest that any money or time that you invest in a car, should be invested in a car that is very solid and appreciating in value. Doing so, will help you get into the next, better car.

Good job on sorting this out, I'm looking at doing a similar setup. One thing I'd recommend is at 7 minutes you only use set screws on that shaft, drill that shaft, and use a through bolt to make it more secure. It would be a bummer to loose steering after all this nice work and put the car in a ditch. Thank you for the tip about just buying the motor instead of getting it from a yard myself.

Thanks for the tip. I am going to work on this tomorrow and will definitely change to through bolts!
