If ABC-TV had given Glen Larson the one year push back production date he needed, imagined how many seasons the show would be on the air.

    • @ThomasFishwick
      @ThomasFishwick 2 года назад +11

That wasn't the real problem. Sure ABC messed things up behind the scenes and rushed production, but their biggest mistakes were:-
A: Insisting Sci-Fi was for kids and that Larson create Boxy and Muffet (A boy and his robot dog) to appeal to children. In the first 20 minutes we see a civilisation bombed into extinction, but don't worry about that kids. Here's a cute robot dog...
and B: Larson envisaged Battlestar as a series of TV movies. Two hour long "events" which had scope. About two or three a year, each with high production values. ABC instead insisted it had to be a weekly series. That is why there were so many two parter stories, only they didn't increase the budget (which was already a lot to be honest). That meant stretching it, which is why we got so many filler episodes done on the (relative) cheap and the same six stock effects shots.

@@ThomasFishwick, in the extras on my 13 disc DVD set from Amazon Germany (well worth having) there is a Q&A with Richard Hatch & he says the main problem was, they could not shoot an episode in 7 days which took the production over budget & as popular as it was, they still cancelled it. Such a pity.

The show was pretty good as '70's space opera went. It wasn't doing bad in the ratings, but was extremely expensive to produce which is what did it in. Had today's technology which allows relatively inexpensive visual effect been around then, it probably would have lasted a few season.

@@peepachu When they pitched the show, they knew they would have a better chance of selling the show if they named dropped Battlestar Galactica. A lot of reboots recently have used that tactic, name drop a classic show and sell it as a reboot, even though it has very little to do with the original show. It's a dirty way of selling a show and screws over the fans of the original show who want to see an actual reboot, not a reboot in name only. CHIPS, Bewitched, Land of the Lost all did this, reboot in name only. Starsky and Hutch was close, if they had not made it a comedy, it would have been better.

Personally I think its unfair to compare the two. The original is a classic Space Opera, a swashbuckling adventure with a wide age range on their audience. And I love the sci-fi retro element.
As for the new series being too fast. Well thats a matter of opinion, what I see in the series is more human elements. Death, life, characters with shifting moral cores and almost real consequences to actions.
For me, I sort of prefer the new series, nothing personal but I found the new series more real.

Dude - I'm 18 and I reckon this stuff is pretty fricken good, Especially when you consider the primitive special effects and primitive bluescreen technology of the time.
New BSG is too fast for my liking, the classic BSG is something you can sit down a relax and enjoy watching - however the slower pace does occasionally annoy me in some rare instances when it slows to a crawl.

Second that. The people who like this are just having trouble accepting they're all in their 40's - 60's. BOTH SERIES ROCKED. It's just like Mac PC haters. They luv their Mac's and hate PCS. As a PC user that attitude annoys me. I see the utility of both. I.e. I'm level headed. Basically Mac haters, peeps who just like dogs/or cats and hate the other, and BSG TOS haters of the new series all lump in to the same type of person: SHALLOW, SIMPLE, ELITIST, MONOLITHIC, ARFTARDS!

    • @stanleyjedrzejczyk2966

      1. Some people, like myself at age 10, wanted to see it in the wide-screen, cinema format that was prevalent in the larger chain theaters of the time.
      2. In larger theaters, especially chains like Showcase Cinemas, it was shown in a analogue stereo surround-sound format called Sensurround as an added attraction to draw larger audiences.

No contest. TIE fighters would outrun Cylon raiders. Unlike Imperial Death Stars,Cylon Base Stars can't blow up planets. An Imperial storm trooper would blow a Cylon warrior's face off before he had time to draw his sword. And I've never seen the Cylon Emperor use mind power to choke a subordinate when he got out of line....

    • @danielmahoney1546

Not Imperious Leader, but Count Iblis can.
The Storm Troopers are no better shots than Centurions.
I dont think a TIE can outmaneuver a Raider and a Base Star's compliment of fighters outnumbers a Star Destroyers atleadt 10 -1.
Kamikaze Raiders packed with solonite ramming a Star Destroyer amid ships at the flight decks would rip an ISD in half.

you absolutely dont need to be 'some old guy' to figure out that this laughable pseudo high-tech remake sucks ;)
in the old series you had characters you could identify with, they were believable. the wise commander adama, the daring legend cain, the cowboy starbuck. and what have they done to it? a drunk is second in command on a capital military ship, for the youporn generation weve got a lesbian commanding battlestar pegasus and milksop baltar is making out with his hallucination -oh come on!

I disagree, They should redo SOME of the effects in the show. Particularly the scenes where the vipers are flying against the out of focus landscape - you know, the stuff that wouldn't have even passed back in 1978.
Never assume that CGI remastering is good, sometimes it doesn't fit in visually and it often destroys the "nostalgia value" of the show.
