In the darkest age of Japan, endless war leaves a country divided. It is the middle of the 16th Century in Feudal Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. Ten legendary warlords strive for supremacy as conspiracies and conflicts wither the empire. Only one will rise above all to win the heart of a nation as the new shogun...The others will die by his sword.
Take on the role of one Daimyo, the clan leader, and use military engagements, economics and diplomacy to achieve the ultimate goal: re-unite Japan under his supreme command and become the new Shogun - the undisputed ruler of a pacified nation.

Seconded, even I don't know how to rank all the different hero units in the game.
Nor do I, which is why I haven’t done it yet, since I never really use them. Hopefully this series will give me some experience with them all so by the end of it I’ll be able to make a meaningful list.

Rank cavalry or ranged units next, (horse archers should probably go on the ranged list). Also please do clan over view on the rise of the samurai factions.
In my first game in Shogun 2 (my first total war) I've played Oda (to play rp) and always recruited samouraï yari and strangely it's hard to conquer the map :D but after I watched all of you legendary campaign I realised I'm dump to do that.
Now for top 5 naginata and a top 5 katana list. I don’t know why things being put onto lists are entertaining.
I don’t know either but people love lists, that’s why I keep coming back to them.
Playing as Oda: Long Yari Ashigaru and matchlock Ashigaru woth Bow Ashigaru for the long range hitting power.
When I played the Ottomo I only used Yari Samurai, along side their over power bow Samurai, because I trough that they were the best unit of this specification, I had no idea that they were better units of this kind.
Are you sure you mean Ottomo and not Chosokabe ?
Ottomo have guns and Chosokabe have the bows as far as I remember.

I really enjoy your let's plays either shogun or any other game and always have a good laugh. Your top lists on shogun are really detailed and really well edited and you can tell the work and time you put into this not to mention the way it helped me on my personal shogun 2 experience and it just bothers me that such good content it's left with less attention than it actually deserves. Anyway keep up with your channel and best of luck on the future :)
This one may be a bit difficult to give a title to, but how about a list of the top alternative units to use in Shogun 2? In other words no ashigaru, no katana samurai, naginata samurai, bow warrior monks or yari calvary.
Could also use a ranking of all missile units, siege included.
What about buffed Yari Samurai?
I've got Satsuma late game Otomo pumping out Level 5 Yari & Naginata Samurai with 11 and 15 armour respectively.
It might be orth noting however that I'm running Darthmod and not vanilla so the anti cav bonus for both are nearly identical.

are there any videos on efficient tech tree / economy /town builds? I think this is where my failures may br
how do you counter long yari-heavy armies? attacvking long-yari-heavy stacks in sieges, how do you counter them? tear them apart by range? that's tough with the fund reduction to get any worth-while ranged units
Of course the Oda come in first, Long Yari are godlike, fear be given to the mere peasant with a pike.
And don't forget the clan buffs

you can make the yari samurai better by downloading a mod called 'yari fix' or something or other which gives yari samurai the ability to go into yari wall, making them a (sorta) worthy investment

Is it possible to use a double yari wall with a yari ashigaru and a yari samurai? The yari samurai have slightly shorter yaris, dont they?
The Date bulletproof samurai is the only unique unit wwith an unit cap, while more powerful ones (shimazu heavy gunners, donderbus cav...) are unlimited. It looks like an oversight.
Still waiting the top naginata units list. I hope it is done sometime.

Oda Long Yari Ashigaru can beat Shimazu Katana Samurai even on a 1v1 for as long as they're on Yari Wall.
Long Yari Ashigaru are best,really good numbers,nice price plus u can plague enemy with them.And Im talking about Single and multiplayer.

I know this might be overdue, but would you trust Naginata Samurai over Yari Samurai and why?
of course use artillery on them and that will break apart the wall real fast not only in forcing them to come to you but land a clean hit on them and there will be plenty of holes in there ranks. and they drop real fast especially the long yari ones.

Setiawan Setiawan It doesnt work, an army unupgraded oda long yari with archer support can easily destroy a death-stack of fully upgraded shimazu katana samurai.

I allways took the yari samurai as a basic antiproyectile unit.
While I've only been watching you for a week or two now, I've already seen how much you love the Yari Ashigaru. Unrelated question, but since you mentioned it....is multiplayer still even a thing with this game? As a long time total war fan, I'm curious of expanding into that realm of the total war gameplay
I've been a long time total war fan and i play shogun 2 relatively regularly however chances of finding someone to do campaign with is extremely low unless you have a friend that's up for it and avatars conquest mode is full of veteran players who have the best stat units and the occasional noob unfortunately...

what makes these peasants more useful is that you can use them as a occupation force because their low upkeep cost.
Where would Ikko Ikki Yari Ashigaru go on this list? Larger unit size and inferior stats diminish with veterancy.
It’s the other way around, they get better with veterancy due to their larger numbers. They start out worse than regular Yari Ashigaru but after gaining some experience they become better. I talk about it in my Ikko Ikki overview.

Quick question for a noob player like me: My campaign map in Shogun 2 isn't a parchment-esque thingy like Donkey's. Like... Its all fog and black instead of showing a map with outlined provinces. Is it a graphics setting or a mod or something?
Other people have asked me this too and I’m honestly not sure, it’s not a mod, so it’s probably a graphics option, not sure which one though.

Looks like Top Gear or The Grand Tour. Definitely a weird recording glitch and not something I put in there on purpose, I've had this thing a couple of times where my recording software will pick up my second monitor or what's behind the game for a split second.

What exactly is bugged in your mind? In my almost 2000 hours I don’t remember encountering more than 1 or 2 bugs.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP Well , I've played this game for nearly 4K hours . And I believe the most different between us is I played is "Multiplayer" mode . And I found it had couples of bugs and unbalanced changes .

The absolute top is mixing yari with long yariso you have a dubble wall.
i kinda like yari ronin, using the dirty cheap province buffed, chevron loan sword for frontline, yari ronin is best for counter flank, more compact, cheap and much stronger than yari samurai. sadly not only lost their master, they lost ability to rapid adcance as well

Generally, sometimes I do challenge campaigns on lower difficulties but those are the exception.
The funny thing about yari samurai is that even nuns are better at anti-cav. The nuns have a lower bonus against cav but far higher stats, including morale, so they do better. Give them 1-2 upgrades vs cav in mp and they are astounding horse choppers. 🔪 🐴

@@MrSmartDonkeyLP it would be great to get an overview of the different types of infantry, their strengths and weaknesses, how to maintain a good economy, how the honour and loyalty system works, ect, the game itself it daunting to new players, and the in game tutorial isnt too good.
When you trained your whole life on the art of spear, just be killed by some peasant that was recently coerced to join the army.
Where do Naganata Samuri place on this list?
They’re a Naginata unit, not a Yari unit. But if you wanted to add them to this list I’d probably put them at #2 or #3.

Frankly, i love strategy games where even the basic units (in this case, ashigaru) have purpose and functionality even into the late game. It feels like the more advanced units are adding nuance complexity to your tactics as the game progresses, rather than simply reinventing the wheel.

3-Samurai, they do have rapid advance
2-Long ashigaru, Oda exclusive they'd win but exclusive
1-Ashigaru, simply yarimazing

Maybe he rated them that way because they’re universally available to every clan unlike Long Yaris which are unique to the Oda? I think that certainly gives them some more value.

I also like that I can recruit YA anywhere which is great for emergencies. In my stacks I use Longs, they are a better unit in battle. However with the building requirements I think them less useful in the strategic map.

How to get yari ronin?
They're only available to recruit for the Ikko Ikki but other clans get them in a very rare special event as well, but that's usually only a single unit and it happens once every 3 campaigns on average.

I can't remember which one any more, but I have always played with a mod that removes the yari wall ability just for reasons seen in this video. The most basic unit shouldn't be the most OP. Still use a lot of yari ashigaru, though, as they're fantastic for keeping enemies occupied while flanking with katanas, naginatas, and cavalry.
wouldn' be better search for a mod (if exists) thatputs yari wall on most of the yari wall
@@antlantis1234 The problem with that is that the yari wall for the ashigaru unit is so great because of their huge number of spears. Yari hero in yari wall would still not be all that good. Yari ashigaru would still be way OP for a starting, basic unit.
