I've never had luck, until this year. I saw a video where the man cut 50% of the green tops when they reached about 10 inches tall. He said by doing that the energy is directed to the bulbs. He came back and had a second cut the same way. Eat the top greens. Sooo I did this and I can say that my onions are actually growing and not wanting to bolt!!

I seen where a lady took n cut the tops, washed them n dried them then cut them in bite size pieces then placed them in a water bottle and put them in the freezer and when cooking just shook out what she needed. I did the same thing what a great way to preserve n use onions.

I've planted red onion " starts" from Tractor Supply a couple of years ago. I planted them in a galvanized 100 gallon water trough filled with my own year old compost. I didn't sift it first. They grew great as well as the yellows. They grew about your baseball sized. Which is the size I usually buy. I didn't add any fertilizer. The compst was made from hardwood leaves, pine needles, horse manure, and kitchen scraps mixed with our very sandy soil. I'm in South Central Texas, zone 8b an hour South of Austin.

I’ve been watching y’all for a long time and have just loved your RUclips channel. I had originally started watching it because of the canning, which I still do. But then, when I found out you guys had a lot of property and you were growing stuff well that just made it even more interesting. I live over here in Oregon in a Apartment, in fact a studio apartment. I’ve been here 12 years. I started growing veggies in pots. Tomatoes, zucchini, bell peppers and carrots. When the Covid hit I was told I couldn’t grow anything! Are you kidding me. Didn’t make sense to me when they were letting people grow flowers in pots. The fear that was put into people over this stuff is ridiculous. Whoever sent you those wagons that was awesome. If I had a big garden I would be using a wagon just like it. Blessings to you and your husband and thank you for sharing your knowledge in your pressure canning and with your gardening you have a blessed weekend and a great week moving forward.🙏🏼♥️

Not braiding... the onion blades are trimmed to about 6 inches and they are placed into 4 strings hung from a nail. Easy and super neat. I have used his way for years. Makes it so easy to hang them and get good airflow, preventing rotting. Looks like how its done in Italy.

Yeah, the nitrogen will do it. The number of your leaves equates to the onion layers that the bulb will contain. As you know, it does this way early before bulb set. A lot of leaves? Gonna be a big onion provided the conditions, food and day lengths are timed appropriate for the variety you're growing.
Sandy conditions are best, but if you have heavier soils, gently loosen the soil around the bulb during bulb setting to encourage it to expand rather than condense tighter.

Last winter one large white one grew on my compost. I went out to add more fruit & veggies scraps we collected and saw log green stems. I pulled them out. Bam one big white onion. Maybe put lots veggie scrapes under you soil. Compost in place. Later i learned that from Robbie bd Gary's RUclips Channel!

I live in the mile high New Mexican desert. Our onions are always small, even with sand we have been trying to make into dirt every year. Our reds are tiny, the others are medium small. Last year we left harvesting way too late and we couldn’t find them. This year the ones that escaped harvest last year tried to flower, but I nipped off the flower and the bulbs developed into the size of yellow onions. Our reds now are medium small. I may try to do that same method next year, leave the small ones behind and remove the flower stalk next year.

I grow purple onions and they are big. We live in south texas and my trick is 1 part mushroom dirt 1 part hog manure Mix the 2 together and put it 2” thick down the row and tiller it. Then plant onions. My hog manure is a year old before I use it. Makes for big onions. especially purple

Yes cutting the top off and ringing them and doing the fish fertilizer should do the job. And use the tops to make pesto with. Good luck

I would be very happy to have my onions grow as large as yours, mine just don't get big. However, they are mine and no matter the size I'm thrilled! We also never grow enough. It seems that the more I grow the more we use ! lol I love your videos.

I just moved to Florida from Michigan in November of 2021. I garden in collapsibled us felt bags. I Rv full time and space is of the essence. I planted yellow onion’s for the first time and from what I can tell are doing fine. The tops I have cut off and use like green onions. I plan on dehydrating some before they dry. Will keep you posted as they come along and so sorry I have no tips (as of yet) to offer. God Bless

I am outside of Chattanooga. I usually don't get good size onions. This year, I put bulbs in the ground in November and I didn't fertilize, or water, or anything. I pretty much neglected them the whole time they have been in the ground. Low and behold, they are still kicking in the ground, and they are the absolute biggest onions I have EVER grown. I can't figure it out, but I sure wish I could. The red onions are the biggest of all three, and normally they don't get big for me at all.

I wonder if to get more substantial red onions you might need to adjust the soil profile where you plant them. Comparatively they have a higher mineral content than other onions. Red onion has folate, thiamine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and manganese, so perhaps remineralizing that soil could be the difference❤️🙏🏼🇺🇸 Good Luck!

That sounds like a great idea. Do you have any ideas on how to get the necessary minerals into the soil? Not many fertilizers have minerals or they don't let them on the packaging. Thanks for sharing

@@Shortcake39553 possibilities could be Glacial Rock Dust or Azomite, different but both remineralize. Epsom salts for the magnesium can help, baked and powdered eggs shells are great for calcium, and even adding banana peels (I put mine in a blender) will add potassium.
