Heidi’s story | Getting a cancer diagnosis with no interpreter.

Heidi's cancer diagnosis shook her world, but as a deaf person it was the absence of an interpreter that truly isolated her in that moment.
Heidi was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018. Like many Deaf people living in the UK, English is a second language, her first being British Sign Language, so she found the communication around her diagnosis difficult. She didn’t always have access to an interpreter, and her family aren’t close by, so couldn’t help with translation.
Being diagnosed with cancer can be frightening enough, without having additional barriers to contend with. Everyone should have access to cancer information and support, and we will do whatever it takes to make sure that happens.
