- Recorded 3/3/20. Going with the generic title on this one. This is a Federal 2001-DC located at Wabash and Harrison in downtown Chicago. Stood on top of the Hilton parking garage a block south. Chicago has 94 2001s, 14 Modulators, and 4DSAs. This siren sits in the shadows of an apartment building, and has been blocked from much of the UV exposure. As a result, the decals have been preserved absolutely beautifully for the last 23 years. Any other siren in Chicago the decals have long since faded.

Afaik the 2001's do fast wail in emergencies and not alternate like the Mod's and DSA's.

@@thetoekster6728 but when it does..it sounds like an old school air raid siren's wailing...I know, because I live about a mile from a 2001-130 in my hometown of Valparaiso, in Porter county ind.. theirs does Alert, and attack "wail" for about, 3 or 5 minutes.
This video just doesn’t do justice in showing how close this thing actually is to that brown building 😂

At my roundabout there's a blue flood siren and if you a straight again you will see an sircom siren it's used for floods or nuclear meltdown or for a lighting warning

My story’s about sirens and stuff lol
One time me and like 4 of my friends were helping a teacher move stuff out of her room ( it was the end of the year). We were on the opposite side of the school, and the tornado siren in our school starts. Our siren sounds like, a long beep (like 15 secs) then it either says “this is a drill” or “bad weather. Seek shelter”. At first we just though it was the speaker in that particular classroom was broken, but then it screamed “Bad weather. Seek shelter. This is not a drill.” So we naturally panicked. The halls were flooded with teachers and students trying to get to their area to hide. We pushed through the crowd. We ended up waiting a full on 2 hours.
Another time, we were all coming back from lunch ( across the school) and we were in the halls. We heard the long beep. Then it said “lockdown. Lockdown.” One of the teachers I don’t have muttered, “kids, run.” We bolted for the nearest class. I had 1 other classmate with me. In the room with me and her was:
-an small class (26ish students)
-2 teachers
We were all huddled in the corner crying until the siren said, “sorry, I hit the wrong button. It’s a lockout.” We all kinda looked at each other like, “what in the heck just happened”
We went back to class and our teacher spent the rest of the day telling us about the sirens and drills, etc. still scares me to think about.

This is majestic! I love how the trains pass right in front of the siren before the test, that just adds to the perfect experience here. Is there a map of Chicago's stuff? I've always been interested in seeing where & what their stuff is.
I think that there is a siren map of Illinois but I dont know.

Just to clear out the false info that some people are spreading, This siren is electromechanical and it isn't from the "broken siren video". The siren you were hearing in the 2010 video was a Federal Signal Modulator, which is an electronic siren that can produce that tone which is Alternate Wail.
The Modulator 6024 has Fast Wail Custom 690HZ tone. And the 2001s, such as this one, has the real Fast Wail signal and runs Fast Wail along with Alternate Wail.

this is the yellow collored 2001-SRN so we usally call it SRNB so people have benn confuesed the Federal Signal Logo is big.
Finally they replaced it with t
something less creepy than the one that went off for that tornado in 2006
They never replaced them, however they don’t use the ‘creepy’ tone anymore.

Petition: get noie and burns to start putting long explanations of the “broken” siren sound at the beginning of each Chicago video, and disable all the comments.

I knew all these comments would happen because of that modulator that did alt wail and they think it was brokey and not knowing this is a completely different siren. But amazing shot!

Dude they are putting more “creepy” sirens. They’re just more downtown. Those creepy ones are signal modulators playing the alternate wail tone. To me it’s the least scary tone they can play. Listen to the Kuwaitt modulator test. That gave me chills.

That’s a 2nd gen I’m pretty sure. It says dc on the rotator box and iirc that indicates that it’s a 2nd gen.

2001s and Modulators are still in production today. 2001s began in 1988, Modulators in 1995. Chicago's system was installed in 1997.

in ky/wv im on the border of ky and wv but in willamson wv the fire dept plays this everyday at 5pm and you can hear it from far away
Funny thing is, that siren has been there about a decade longer than that building. The building went up in 2006.
I notice something similar happened recently to the 2001 near Canal and 16th (just NW of Chinatown). Used to be in an empty lot, now there's a nondescript concrete building next to it which pretty much blocks all of the sound to the south.

I have been curious about sirens located in a place surrounded by tall buildings. Does their sound cover less than a 1 mile radius from the siren location? I like how that siren sound echoes off the buildings. Would sirens like this one be placed closer together in consideration of noisy traffic and multiple surrounding large buildings?
Yes, the tall buildings drastically reduce their range. There are 12 sirens in the immediate downtown Chicago area. If the buildings weren't there, the area would be covered fine by 3-4 sirens. This particular siren probably has an effective range of a quarter mile. There's another 2001 3 blocks west of this one, and a Modulator about 4 blocks to the southeast.
