Approximately four thousand Horsa Gliders were produced until 1946. None of these devices have been preserved. That is why this exact replica with original parts is a very special asset to the museum. The Horsa is twenty meters long and has a wingspan of no less than 27 meters.
In recent months, a team of experts has been working on the device. Where the wings could not yet be mounted in Oosterbeek, both wings are placed on the aircraft in Overloon. The Royal Netherlands Air Force and Army are doing their part to ensure that the Horsa Glider can be admired in its full glory in the museum. At the moment 3D adapters are being made so that the wings can be made final on the device at the end of this year.
During World War II, Horsa gliders were first used in Norway in November 1942. Later they also deployed in the invasion of Sicily, during D-Day, in large numbers during Operation Market Garden with landing zones in and around Wolfheze and Nijmegen and also in Operation Varsity. These aircraft were not only used to transport airborne troops, but also for means of transport such as jeeps, trailers, bicycles and motorcycles, but also heavy weapons such as cannons. With the arrival of these wooden gliders, troops were able to land close to their target.
    Wings of Liberation Museum
Go back in time to the liberation of the Netherlands: the sound of roaring fighter plane engines, heroic pilots and American paratroopers.
The Wings of Liberation Museum tells the compelling story of the liberation of the southern Netherlands at the end of World War II. The museum is situated in the area where, on 17 September 1944, airborne operations as part of Operation Market Garden marked the beginning of the liberation of the southern Netherlands. The timeline comprises the entire period from the occupation in 1940 and the repression years 1940-1944, through to the liberation in the final months of 1944.
The museum has an extensive collection including dioramas, photos, tanks, aircraft, and weaponry that was actually used in Operation Market Garden
Since 1997, Museum Bevrijdende Vleugels has been located at its current location in Best. However, a whole history preceded this!
Museum Bevrijdende Vleugels originated from a temporary exhibition that was organized by Mr Jan Driessen (1921 - 2010) in Veghel on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Operation Market Garden. The exhibition was such a success that it was decided to house his collection in a museum. The museum was located in Veghel from 1984 to 1996
Operation Market Garden is one of the most important military events in Dutch history. In September 1944, the Allies landed men and equipment with 'gliders' on the site that is now right next to the Liberating Wings Museum. Step in the footsteps of the heroes of the 101st Airborne Division and relive the story that would lead to the liberation of the South of the Netherlands. “ Here you are reminded of a time we should never forget, ” said a previous visitor.
“ Impressive place full of important history ”
The museum is part of an extensive complex in the middle of the woods. In various halls you will learn about this impressive operation and view unique aircraft, tracked vehicles, tanks, gliders, army jeeps, Zündapp engines, anti-aircraft guns, cannons and ammunition that were actually used at the end of WWII. On the large terrace of Brasserie 't Boshuys you can take in everything while enjoying a tasty lunch, coffee and cake or a delicious dinner. And especially for children: a playground with a real play castle - with a drawbridge! - and various playground equipment.
