Good stuff, as ever! To add a failsafe to an existing setup, insert a loop of #9 bank line, or even mason's line, between each grommet and its guy line.

I appreciate your detail in presenting this DYI project. I have everything needed for this project at the house. I’m going to build out five of these tarp steaks, with the bank line and toggles attached this weekend. This tip is going to make a quick tarp or poncho setup to beat a rain shower much better. Nothing worse than fighting with steaks, cordage and knits when trying to hurry with a tarp setup in the rain. Be safe and have a great weekend.

Brilliant, Black. Bankline is much cheaper and replaceable than a tarp or poncho, so a sacrificial breakaway "joint" is a great idea. Love the toggle idea and crafting them from a lightweight, plastic, coat hanger would never have occurred to me. The bottle cap idea might be great in some parts of the country, but I live and usually camp in rocky areas that necessitate some sort of hammer and very sturdy stakes (that doesn't negate the concept though!).

I seen a guy use those little bungee cords that come in those sets from walmart and other stores, they use the red ones with the ball on the ends to make a bungee guy line, they stretch and save the corners of those tarps.

I’ve done something similar using wood dowels. I first saw wooden “dog legs” by an old timer almost 65 years ago 😳 I was too young to understand their usage but over time I was around enough guys who were using them and taught me about them. I would bet that they’ve been used a thousand years or more. I have actually noticed them on chuck wagon tarps in some Charlie Russel paintings.

Great idea of putting the line on the peg instead of the tarp. I use light bank line too but instead of cutting a coat hanger, I use those plastic kitchen blocks out of DIY stores 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Great idea using a toggle made from a plastic coat hanger. When I camp for a week or more in one spot and want to be comfortable. I use a heavy duty tarp (20’ x 30’) that have metal D-rings every yard. I place a pole in every D-ring and secure it with a guy rope that I made featuring a slide toggle for tensioning, a spring tensioner that is attached to the rope and a crimped loop of rope attached to the other end of the tensioner and to a large sand peg. No pegs come out and the tarp never has ripped.

Great idea with the toggle. I have tried using bank line with the same stakes. However, my eyes are older and I kept tripping over the line. Had to go back to orange paracord so I could see my guy lines. Still think the toggle idea could work for me. Might need a thicker diameter piece for the toggle. Thanks

Great idea! You’re right about the tensile strength overkill of 550 cord too! I’m done with it for tarp setup, thanks to you! You saved me a bunch of bulk and weight in my kits! Thanks!

i have put line on my stakes, but just left bowline on the end, didnt put toggles. I also used 36 bank line cause its what i had. May get some smaller line and switch it out
