  • Harvesting Chaga Mushrooms with responsibility to preserve the longevity of the forest and mushrooms is an A-one top priority.
    One of the most important conversations I have at events, markets, restaurants, seminars, in stores and online with you fellow fungi foragers is the conversation around sustainable foraging of mushrooms.
    This is a topic I actually light up from because it encompasses my deep love of the forest and sharing the adventures of being in the wilderness mushroom hunting.

    When walking through areas with a lot of birch trees, I used to see a fair amount of chaga. However, in the last couple of years what I am mostly seeing is a lot of trees from which the chaga has been removed and very little chaga itself. This is not simply a matter of a few people harvesting some for personal use. With the popularization of this fungus it seems that there are some people who think of it as a free resource that they can harvest at will in order to make some money. What I'm finding is that most of the people out there harvesting chaga are doing their best to gouge every last bit of it out of the tree. Remember, in this case they aren't just harvesting the fruit and leaving the organism intact. They are harvesting the whole fungus! In addition, they are doing a lot of damage to the trees that it grows on, leaving gaping wounds through which the trees can easily be affected by insects or disease. Until the last decade or so, most people in our society had never heard of it. However, it has become popularized in recent years, which is not a good thing! This fungus grows very slowly and is difficult to cultivate. When we harvest the fruiting body of a fungus, we are not harvesting the main part of the organism. However, chaga doesn't grow this way. The part that appears growing out of the side of birch trees is not the fruit. It is the actual fungus. Chaga rarely fruits and usually only after the tree dies. So, when we harvest chaga, we are harvesting the main body of the organism.

      That's why I record videos like this to make people aware of how to harvest respectfully and leave lots for the forest. The biggest culprits of what you are mentioning are large companies foraging chaga without care and mass producing.

      That's wild. I'd be curious to see it's actually chaga as it doesn't really grow outside of the northern hemisphere

    How far down south in the US can you find chaga

    • @ShaneMilson
      @ShaneMilson  4 года назад

      You want to consider if there are birch trees where you're at! That's chaga's home tree. Typically the most northern states are going to be the cut off point for where you would be able to find chaga in the US

    Great video Shane. You are a very spiritual person. What is your basic belief . native american , Buddist or other. Just curious. I know from previous videos ( some by you) that main stream science views chaga as a parasite. I personally believe that is debatable and depends on your point of view. I think chaga is an opertunistic organism that hitches a ride to it's "guardian" and offers healing for a home. Maybe this isn't in the trees best interest long term. But that doesn't make it a true parasite or evil.People tend to boil things down to the simplest definition. Categorize , pigeon hole, define and pass down to students as facts to be accepted without question. Wheres the wonder?

      Hey Timothy. Thanks for the comment (and others I've seen across my channel from you). My basic belief is dynamic, in that it combines many spiritual views, mixed with scientific vantage points. I find myself often crediting "the universe AND god" together in one sentence in gratitude of the great magic in my life. I don't subscribe to the deeply arrogant study and belief's "science" minded people try to relay as though it were a fact, rather then just an opinion to the best of someone's knowledge. I always investigate for myself through experience and intuition. This especially when it comes to conversations surrounding topics around Chaga which I believe to be one of, if not, the most powerfully healing and activating substances on planet earth. It also seems to cause the biggest disparity between beliefs on topics like parasitic vs. symbiotic structure with the tree. I find it funny also how the hard core "science" people love to come at it from the pessimistic (least magical) perspective (as they do with most everything) considering it to be a parasite, whereas the "spiritual" heart-centered people (deeper connection with themselves and a respect for nature) lean seemingly always towards the symbiotic view point. I knew from the second I heard the two concepts where Chaga's true core "intents" are. It came to me instantaneously upon seeing it on the tree for the first time and drinking it fresh that this is a great helper of humanity to raise consciousness through awareness of one SELF and it's alliance with the tree. I will say one thing for certain that I've observed. Every single person that I've spoken to, that believes Chaga to be a parasite is in "rough shape", mentally, physically, and definitely spiritually. They are doubters. They are parasitic themselves in how they try to throw around their theories in an angry and aggressive tone while all the spirit peeps who speak of chaga being a symbiosis entity are generally happy, healthy and vibing high on life. As they say, "how you do anything, is how you do everything". I know which camp I'd rather kick it in. Thanks again for the comment. Much love.

      Dude, i think we might be brothers! You eloquently summed up my belief system. I told my children when they were college, Respect your instructors always , but don't believe them always. They are teaching you what they were taught. That doesn't mean they're right.
      Just got back from foraging. Looking for goldenseal , black cohosh and ginseng for transplanting to my woods garden.. Found none , but did come out with about fifty pounds of chaga. 25 lbs was one growth and I didn't go deep or take all the black. My point is I did find one dead tree with chaga on it. I found a hundred or more dead with no sign of chaga. Logging damage mostly. I forming a new theory. Humans may be the parasite that are responsible for tree death. I know , it sounds crazy , but the evidence is compelling. Peace brother and may the force be with you.
