A Walk Through Blenheim Palace

  • Blenheim Palace is a monumental country house situated in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England. It is the principal residence of the dukes of Marlborough, and the only non-royal non-episcopal country house in England to hold the title of palace. The palace, one of England's largest houses, was built between 1705 and circa 1722. Blenheim Palace was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
The building of the palace was originally intended to be a reward to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, from a grateful nation for the duke's military triumphs against the French and Bavarians during the War of the Spanish Succession, culminating in the 1704 Battle of Blenheim. However, soon after its construction began, the palace was to become the subject of political infighting; this led to Marlborough's exile, the fall from power of his duchess, and lasting damage to the reputation of the architect Sir John Vanbrugh.
Designed in the rare, and short-lived, English Baroque style, architectural appreciation of the palace is as divided today as it was in the 1720s. It is unique in its combined usage as a family home, mausoleum and national monument. The palace is also notable as the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill.

Having to traverse so much space could be quite wearisome I suppose. This edifice is rather heavy and overwhelming. It reminds me of the fact that despite all of our labours and achievements, we humans go out of this world as naked as we entered it. Some people are weighed down by what they own.
What is really worthwhile (precious) in life? The story of Lazarus and the rich man is a warning to humanity.

Michael Jiroch -the music of the Italian baroque master Giovanni Bononcini would have been very appropriate as the duke and duchess of Marlborough were great patrons of this composer who was George Frederick Handel's great rival. The duchess, in particular, was a great fan.Rivalry between the fans of these 2 leading opera composers led to the famous rhyme "between tweedledum and tweedledee." Handel won out in the end as it was demonstrated that Bononcini had passed off someone else's music as his own and he had to leave England in disgrace.Incidentally, the famous tune known as "Handel's largo" was previously a tune by Bononcini that Handel improved on.Incidentally again -Handel's "Largo" was the first piece of music to be broadcast on public radio -by a Canadian inventor called Fessenden circa 1907.

My memories of Blenheim Palace from several years ago. It’s splendid in the way these huge stately homes are, and it is huge. It has a lot of very high grey halls, and many beautiful but perhaps overly ornate rooms with priceless furniture and hung with family and historical portraits, mostly relating the story of the Marlborough’s whose home this is. The most interesting room I thought is the moderate sized bedroom where Winston Churchill was was born, which has some items from his childhood preserved there, and the most beautiful room is the long light filled drawing room/library. This room also has a magnificent and well maintained pipe organ at one end, and organ recitals have been held there and probably still are. Have attended one there on one occasion which was a lovely experience. The grounds and gardens are stunning, designed by Capability Brown, and watching a herd of Friesian cattle coming across the field to the milking parlour suggests Blenheim situated just outside the very attractive village of Woodstock, is also a working farm.

I just can't believe how big it is. A small portion of the front center part alone looks like it could be a mansion by itself. No homes in the world compare to English country houses. Disgusting displays of wealth but so beautiful I can't help but fall in love and daydream about the lives nobles led in those homes (cognitive dissonance much?) I can't wait to tour a few of them. I recently found out you can book a room in Blenheim for a couple nights. The experience would be worth the money

I live in the USA, but have been to Blenheil Palace several times on my trips to England. I liked it better 25 years ago, when sheep were grazing on the land. It was more open years ago. My last trip there was a couple of years ago. The tour guide was rather rude and not very knowledgable or engaging. There was security patroling the place. Not a welcoming enviorment. The locals are able to hang out on the grounds for free.

Sure, Bath used to b better 25 years ago also but things change and some things do not.
IMO, your cash is better spent in Cheltenham which is about midway between Blenheim and Bath..
Did I mention cash? I run the largest free website of free attractions in the uk so I haven revenue from it. I do it for love.
If I see a turd, I call it a turd. Blenheim is a turd imo.

Best example may be you are chocking to death on a product puechached in their store, and yo cannot get through to the seller or the manufacturer.
There are many places in the uk that have way better service and may not leave you or yours dead while trying to contact the owners or company during normal opening hours ....
    Mc Donalds? KFC?
Even Wimpy who I think make the worst burger in town in my opinion seem to be contactable and even pleasant enough to engage in pleasant dialogue so what is the problem that Blenheim Palace has?
Some sort of self love that states they have a coveted name and are impervious to providing a service ?
I can state at least 5 quality venues close to Blenheim that are free to enter and man their telephones..
Why bother with Blenheim Palace and the hassle?
