Several of the all-time great heavyweights were awarded gift decisions over the decades. Many years before this fight, Joe Louis was given a suspicious win over 'Jersey' Joe Walcott; Many years after this fight, Evander Holyfield received a dubious draw over Lennox Lewis. While it wasn't much consolation to those challengers who didn't get the decisions they earned those nights, esteemed champions have often gotten the benefit of the doubt. Right or wrong, it's always been part of the fight game and most likely always will.
Yup. But for diff reasons. Boxing commissions thru the Judges decide they can make more $$$ With Ali as champ than Norton. And Lewis v. Holyfield, they knew draw would result in rematch = $$$$$.
What a fight this was. The Greatest only just retaining his crown, but deservedly so. Norton took him to the very limit, in all three fights. Pure sport at the highest level!
I read lots of great comments here. Many about Norton's style. I'm not that knowledgable about the whole thing, but to hear Norton's shots was awesome. The guy was just a stud, style or no style. He was really ready and in shape for this one.
@@emzid5105 I was thinking of Holmes vs Spinks in 1985, but point well taken. After reading your reply it peaked my interest so I watched the fight online. Ken Norton was definitely a warrior who fought his heart out that night and even though he was awarded the title via a technicality he deserved to be given the reigning champions nod as well! I was only four years old in 1978 but was old enough to remember the Spinks fight. I love the sport and just feel that if your coming after the king you’d better kill the king. These guys work so hard to become champions I just hate to see them lose when it’s so close, lol.
Abraço do Brasil!
Muhammad Ali......The GOAT, is The Greatest not because he was The Best boxer, it is because he is Muhammad Ali. Never went out to throw wild body punches, never hurt the opponents unnecessarily and all concentration towards scoring points rather than going berserk. Besides, he was a celebrity whose charisma outside the ring exceeded his achievements inside it.
Watched this fight several times. Like Ali vs Frazier 3 Norton gave his best like Frazier did but Ali just outclassed them both. What set him apart from all the great heavyweights of that era he could raise his game level 3 levels higher. Fought hard and very smart. Just that rare, special breed that comes along once in a generation.

Foreman was MIA fighting 5 bums a night in exhibitions going thru crazy bad depression , the fight with Young was for a shot at the title Foreman lostand retired hence no rematch , Ali would have beat Foreman even easier Young proved that a non puncher dropped Foreman 👍
He should've retired after the 1975 thrills in Manila! Although he could still fight here, had he retired after 1975 I think his condition would have been alot better.
Styles make fight. As great as Ali was, Norton always had his numbers. It hurts me to state this but, I've had the pleasure of watching all three fights live and I believe Norton won all three of them.
@ufster81 Please. We are not taking any thing away from Ali's greatness by admitting that he lost to another great champion like Kenny Norton. Muhammad Ali always had problems against jabbers and counter punchers. Besides, prime Ali was over after the 3 year exile anyway and you can clearly see that Ali was suffering from initial stage of Parkinson's at the time of this fight. Also, a few months prior to this fight, Ali was in a fight against a Japanese wrestler named Antonio Inoki, who laid on his back for 15 rounds and continuously kicked Ali's legs and thighs. I blame that fight for Ali not being able to dance and resorting to being flat footed and on the ropes for most of this fight. I give Ali tremendous amount of credit just for not ducking this fight and going the distance against such a powerful and technically sound boxer like Norton. We all love Ali and he will always be our hero(RIP). However, if you would watch this fight in its entirety (not just hightlight), without being biased, you would realize who really won this fight.
@Curtis Ostriker I finally meet someone who knows what he's talking about. On top of your points about the jabs and counter punching, Ali was always a one dimensional fighter in that, he was just a head hunter while Norton knew how to mix it up with devestating body punches. We all love Ali not only as a great boxer but as who he was and what he represented. People just cannot accept the fact that their hero can be defeated. If these two men had met before or during the three year of exile, when Ali still possessed the razor sharp jabs that could literally cut open the opponent's face, tremendous reflexes and speed and the ability and stamina to stay on his toes for 15 round instead of relying on his rope a dope techticks, we may have a different outcomerne. It's all speculation, but it's fun just thinking about it. I wish there was better competition in today's era of heavyweight boxing so that I can get over the Ali the Ali era.
Wow! I couldn't agree with you more in all the points you make. I am also glad you mentioned Larry Holmes, who I consider the most under rated fighter of all time. Compared to Ali's snapping jab, Larry put his shoulder behind his jab, which was powerful enough to knock somebody out. He had tremendous power in both hands and he knew how to mix it up with the body attacks. His foot work was not as pretty or graceful as Ali's, but was very effective. He knew how to cut off the ring. His ring generalship was out of this world. He was able to adopt to any style of fighting. He also showed tremendous heart and his chin was as strong as any fighter I've seen. I would go even further than you and give him the title, the GOAT. Ther is one more issue to think about. Had Ali won the first Leon Spinks fight, we may have seen Ali vs Norton IV. As proud a champion that he was, Ali would not have ducked this fight and it would have been disastrous for him. Kenny Norton would not have let Muhammad Ali finish the fight on his feet like Larry Holmes did. I llove Ali too much to even imagine him getting knocked out flat on his back. Anyway, we all know that there is no such thing as an invincible fighter. Anybody can beat anybody in a given day. It's all if's and then's and imagination and speculation. It was still fun sharing my thoughts about this with you. Hope you stay safe during this world wide crisis.
with a little help from his friends. Ali got a lot of gift decisions in his later years. Promoters needed to keep making money off him.....and it took away Ali's ability to live a normal life, later on for the rest of his days. His own greatness was his downfall.
Both men were phenomenal boxers, in a very tough era. Grateful I got to meet Ken Norton a couple of times. Kind, encouraging man. RIP Ali and Norton.

Thank you for uploading this. I love when you can actually hear and almost feel the blows connecting. Only problem is that the video edit only shows Norton beating the crap out of Ali, yet Ali won.
That's kind of how the fight went. Norton and many people thought that Norton won this very close fight.
Ali robbed him (again)

Damn the sound of those punches from Norton, can't understand how Ali resisted those heavy shots.
Look at him later in life. He allowed far too much punishment.
@@thalegacy6 yeah I know but I refer on resisting that punches at the moment, it looks those punches can make anybody cry of pain xD
Man that first round was hell.. hard punchers always to Ali's body
Stupendous fighters!!
You're right, but not here. Ali clearly won the fight.
You have to completely dominate or knockout the champion to take his belt, as it should be.
Nah...
@@ganondorf180 shut up
Tell that to Larry Holmes…
@@aaronshane37 You mean Holmes vs Norton 1978 or Mike Spinks vs Holmes 1985 ?
@@emzid5105 I was thinking of Holmes vs Spinks in 1985, but point well taken. After reading your reply it peaked my interest so I watched the fight online. Ken Norton was definitely a warrior who fought his heart out that night and even though he was awarded the title via a technicality he deserved to be given the reigning champions nod as well! I was only four years old in 1978 but was old enough to remember the Spinks fight. I love the sport and just feel that if your coming after the king you’d better kill the king. These guys work so hard to become champions I just hate to see them lose when it’s so close, lol.

Holy crap those punches to the body
Muhammad Ali......The GOAT, is The Greatest not because he was The Best boxer, it is because he is Muhammad Ali. Never went out to throw wild body punches, never hurt the opponents unnecessarily and all concentration towards scoring points rather than going berserk. Besides, he was a celebrity whose charisma outside the ring exceeded his achievements inside it.
Muhammed ali ❤

Real boxing, i like boxing iam from indonesia
The heavyweight division was special. This fight was intense, they beat the hell out of each other.
Ke hopa mopa tx
Watched this fight several times. Like Ali vs Frazier 3 Norton gave his best like Frazier did but Ali just outclassed them both. What set him apart from all the great heavyweights of that era he could raise his game level 3 levels higher. Fought hard and very smart. Just that rare, special breed that comes along once in a generation.
Holy damn those body shoot by Norton !

I never saw Ali miss so much in this fight. He took brutal punishment and the judges robbed Norton. Even Ali admitted it
Ali kept the title //he felt bad cuz Norton was crying //the challenger can't split rounds with the champ and expect to take the title 💯
Faced norton and Frazier for a third time after beating foreman. He most likely did that so he wouldn’t have to face George again.
Lol maybe
What ???
Ali took everything Foreman had...
Stood in front of him...took his shots everything Foreman had in his book...
Then knocked him out...
U must be crazy saying Ali ducked foreman
Foreman was MIA fighting 5 bums a night in exhibitions going thru crazy bad depression , the fight with Young was for a shot at the title Foreman lostand retired hence no rematch , Ali would have beat Foreman even easier Young proved that a non puncher dropped Foreman 👍

He should've retired after the 1975 thrills in Manila! Although he could still fight here, had he retired after 1975 I think his condition would have been alot better.
Agreed
Stanley Roberts he couldn’t stop fighting at the time Ali was out of money and needed to carry on fighting
He got hit in the head way too much in his career.
Totally agree!!!
Nah, fuck him, he deserved that
Styles make fight.

Ali won it was close but he won. Great trilogy from Norton man.
champ kept the title 💯
with a little help from his friends. Ali got a lot of gift decisions in his later years. Promoters needed to keep making money off him.....and it took away Ali's ability to live a normal life, later on for the rest of his days. His own greatness was his downfall.
