Just picked it up under the P1 SKU. Same machine but with a Quadro graphics card. Lenovo had a 25% off sale during tax return season. Loving it. Just FYI, in bios you can switch the Fn and Ctrl keys back to the standard order.
I've always liked using the fish shell $ sudo apt-get install fish # assuming you have the repository added $ chsh -s `which fish` Then go ahead and install fisher or ohmyfish and install bobthefish using either of those package managers for a nice git aware prompt
Congrats, @LearnLinux.tv, you deserve. Well, I liked this machine and mostly your comments. I wish for your channel and you, buddy, much more successful. I liked and shared. :D
Great review jay. I got a Lenovo P1 a couple of months ago which is the same as the X1 extreme but has a quadro card. Have you run all the bios updates? My fan noise improved with an update and ran cooler too. I have under volted and im getting a little over 6 hours and the noise is under better control
A follow up to my last comment. Are there any gotchas or must do first config operations on the X1 prior to installing Pop? I’ve read there are some bios settings that must be changed but I thought I’d try and confirm it with a person (you) who obviously knows. Also using Pop can you run the X1 attached to a monitor with the lid closed? Does it wake up from sleep or is it a restart every session? Thanks so much, Christopher
How many disks can it hold? Can it run a 4K monitor? Oh, and can you buy any old transformer with the right voltage, wattage, and pin config or does Lenovo screw you over with a special protocol that forces you to buy transformers at hundreds of dollars directly from them?
I own FHD i7 8750H 16GB model but facing a lot of stability issue so im getting my motherboard replaced under warranty. There seems to a few cases of faulty motherboard/CPU, battery issues, overheating and BIOS in this device but your device seems perfectly fine. Just noticed 5days uptime on your unit while my unit usually crashes 3 times a day made me really zealous. I hope you make more videos about this laptop including some of the best tweaks for the setup of PopOS.
man i'm about to buy one in the coming months but keep seeing comments like yours now i'm scared cuz i live overseas so no shipping back if something is wrong :'-(
@@NanoMalo lol which model are you planning to buy? I also live overseas and that was also quite an issue. But fortunately Lenovo has this international warranty service which is quite useful and only costs about $8. First make sure the local service provider will honour the international warranty then it might be easier to claim warranty. Sadly the quality control seems quite a problem right now. I advice you to surf through reddit first. This occurs 5% of the time but you could be that unfortunate 5% just like me.
@@rajmaleku8397 well I used to own a Lenovo y500 few years ago and got it with a faulty Blu Ray drive and then had screen issues later on so there's that too lol... I wanted the extreme x1 with the i7 8850H but I didn't know about the Intrrnational insurance thing I'll look into it!
@@NanoMalolook into xps 15, it has less features but better batterylife and price. But, keyboard on x1e is legendary. If it wasnt the cpu problem this thing is the best laptop to buy imo. Gen 2 is also comming lookout for that too..
welcome to the Thinkpad community. Learn to use the TrackPoint (the red knob) and you'll see that those buttons are where they need to be. No serious thinkpad user cares about the touchpad. It's much, much more convenient to use that TrackPoint. Mouses are obsolete too. The only place where you need them is in games. And when you have to use another laptop that is not a Thinkpad, you feel imediatly the awkwardness of not having it... it's like being naked. LOL.
So happy to see the review! No one else has done an X1 Linux review or at least I haven’t found any. It’s especially useful to see Pop OS running on it because that’s what I’m planning to (dual) boot with, sadly I can’t get totally away from windows and I can’t use a VM or I’d go that route. Also so happy you mentioned you’re using the actual nvidia driver because I was hoping to do the same. Note on the loud, spinning almost too much fan issue. I noticed a bios update a while back with a fan profile improvement. Also I believe there’s a fan control app for the device for more fine tuning but I can’t swear to the later. Cheers.
There is a package called fingerprint-gui that is supposed to work with Thinkpads it might work for you. I have an Asus so it doesn’t work on my laptop.
The fingerprint-gui tool only works on older ThinkPads. Won't work on the newer ones like the T480 (its fingerprint reader doesn't work like a fingerprint reader) for example.
holly crap, I've just was looking for someone trustworthy reviewing Linux on this laptop. I'm thinking about upcoming OLED version (gen 2). What do you guys think - will it work under Linux nicely?
I'm looking at the Gen 2 of these laptops (either X1 extreme or P1 which are essentially the same)? I was debating on whether to get the 4k screen or 1080P. I've heard linux is horrible at scaling issues. Is this true?
Hey, Question, I’m currently in China and need a new laptop. Is there anyway to check and know if I’m getting exactly what is told or advertised to be in the PC while I’m still in store? Because I’ve already ran into one that didn’t have the correct stuff. Thanks,
See my comment under this video. With Ubuntu 18.04, you'll be fine. The ThinkPad series is known to be compatible with basically any major Linux distribution. The website thinkwiki.org is your friend.
Nice hardware :) nice looking but this Windows key should be changed to pinguin image.. Something like pinguin with big S on t-shirt and cape on the back! It's "super" key in every DE so.. Super Ping :)) thx 4 review About Doom & Borderlands is VSYNC is on? Looks like off..
haha, you can't say you don't like the buttons on top of the trackpad .... on a thinkpad. It's like saying you don't like the meowing of a cat. Thinkpads are thinkpads :P Also, you get used quickly to that.. I personally really don't like buttons on the bottom of the trackpad tho...

try installing ZSH, then make a custom theme and find and replace (manually) the default character that shows

Any issues with screen tearing when connected to an external monitor? Do you have a USB-C / Thunderbolt Display to test with?
Oh man! I hope they see this and answer. I would like to know as well.
That's my dream laptop right there! Although I'm quite content with my ThinkPad t430s
Final Fantasy IV is my fav RPG of all time too.
Very soon will be X1 Extreme 2gen... and you are doing for this 1 gen now?

If the machine is currently running Windows, check the device manager, and then (most importantly) check the system logs for any hardware errors.
The little "annoying nub" is one of the main reasons people are into thinkpads. If it were not for the nub, I would go dell xps.
