How To Layer Leads Properly (Mixing Tutorial)

  • In this mixing tutorial, you will learn the basics of layering leads properly in your mix. It will give you an example of how you can go about layering your leads in order to get them to sound fat, wide and poping out of the mix. Layering sounds, and especially lead sounds in a song is very important in modern dance music. There are a few things to keep in mind when layering sounds, so make sure to watch the entire video so that you don't miss anything. If you want to learn how to mix music properly then this video will help you out. Also, make sure to check out my other how to mix videos. Mixing and mastering is one of the most difficult things to get to grips with for beginners, but it doesn't have to be difficult. Simply follow these simple mixing rules, and your mix will sound big, fat, crisp, and clear. That's the ultimate goal of any music producer.
When mixing a song, you have one main goal, and that is to ensure that there's space for all the elements in the mix. Every element in the mix needs to have it's own space int he frequency spectrum, so that it pops out of the mix, without interfering with any other elements in the mix. IF that happens, the song will sound muffled or muddy, and you don't want that.
When layering sounds, don't just pick sounds at random. Try to build your layers based on what frequencies are missing in your mix. That's the best way to get fat-sounding leads. This mixing tip also applies to most other sounds as well when mixing music.
You should always EQ sounds while others are playing as well, not just in solo. I talk more about this in my EQ tutorial.

FireWalk Just discovered your channel and I love the tutorials. So informative, yet clear, focused and straight to the point. You answer questions that I think of when I'm watching other tutorial videos. I've always heard "Pick the right sounds to layer." Yet never hear suggestions on how to go about that. Yet as soon as I think it when watching your video, you answer! This video was extremely helpful and I'm about to binge watch your mixing tutorials after subscribing. Thanks for the tutorials! :D

I love tutorials with this voice. So detailled without talking arround the point.I always did layering almost like you told us but i learned some new stuff (frequency part, Echo/Reverb Part) and its absolutetly true, sometimes it fits, sometimes i made epic leads, sometimes not ..reason was the echo/reverb part which i had simply luck with when it sounded good.

Thanks! Indeed. It's remarkable how much the actual mixing has to say for the end result. It's not easy, especially when you have a lot of similar instruments like that. They will inevitably try to mask each other. It requires some skills to make them all seem clear at the same time. :)

    Holy shit, was this helpful.....!
It's my first time producing Progressive House and I finally know how to properly work layering. I never thought that there was so many intricacies in-depth with this matter and its components. Subscribed and liked my friend!! What a bible this was!

You're welcome :) I have a long list of things to do, and I'm trying to cross off as much as possible. Yes, this is something I have considered, as well as making some templates for you guys to download. I just haven't had much time lately, so hopefully I'll be able to step up my game once I get some more free time on my hands :)

You're tutorials are really good, the fact they're usually done over trance is perfect for me as thats what I'm making aswell, cheers bud

Thanks, glad to hear that you like them. I try to make tutorials that's as generic as possible, so that they can be of use to any kind of producer. However, Trance is by far my favorite genre so there will also be some trance specific tutorials. :)
