Great comparison. That SM57 + M160 in mono rocked! I usually prefer the MD421, but in this case the e906 sounded like the best single mic choice.

Hello, have you ever combined the 906 with any one of the ribbon microphones? And if so, which is the better combination? Thanks for the demonstration!

yikes the i5 really hurt. The 906 was oddly very nicely balanced for this tone. Ordinarily I find them way too bright but that fit. The 57+121 combo was classic. This was helpful so thank you!

57 + 160 is killing me, oh wow... and' it's a third of the price of an R121!

And the 160 is that most famous grinding heartbeat ever on Levy, so it can obviously do other things as well.

Great job. SM57 + either ribbon is pretty golden. Didn't care much for any of the others.

Went in expecting to like the Royer + 57 best, and came out liking the M160 + 57 best! Cool! Probably depends on mic positioning, too.

I wish people would have mixes plus guitar by itself more in videos like this. I really think that would be helpful.

Overall the MD421 sounds best to my ears, but I quite like the Beyer M160 !

The 421 and i5 are good on clean and semi-clean, in my experience. They tend to be a bit brittle on higher gain. The R-121 is simply uncompetitive for the price compared to a lot of the other ribbon options around these days. Mesanovic, Samar, SE, etc. 20 years ago it had little competition, but these days it sounds mediocre and costs a lot.

its interesting how the m160 moves, takes edge over R121 (which is more of a blending mic). E906 might be winner alone.

Two SM57s on the edge of the dustcap and towards the edge of the cone or a pair at 55degrees with the on axis one right on the centreline of the speaker.

I'm just listening on cheap monitors at home, but I can hear stereo in the 57 + 121 or m160 clips. I'm guessing they are panned L/R? If the 57+160 sounds that good, I bet the 57+e906 or e906+m160 would sound even better! Overall, for a single mic, for best all around balanced tone that'll work best for most stuff, e906 slays IMHO.

How does the M160 sound so terrible? Jeez, nearly pulled the trigger on one today, looks like I dodged a bullet!

The E906 at 1:37 and SM57/R121 combo at 2:22 sound so remarkably close it’s hard to believe that’s £145 vs £1500 of microphones. I do think the combo sounds marginally better but it’s nothing I can’t make up for the EQ and doubling tracking using an E906. Thanks this is a great demo and you just saved me a bucket load of ££$$€€!!!

When I turn the volume down so I can baaaaaarely hear it, which is how it would be in a mix with other things going on, I realize why the 57 is the de-facto mic for guitar cabs. It just has the right frequencies to poke out amid the “noise.” I really wanted it to be the 906, but ears don’t lie. The 421 was the worst, sounding like boiled buttholes BUT I acknowledge that in the right mix, it could be just the thing. The 121 is highly over rated, and overpriced, IMO.
    As always, YVVM

The e906 has a switchable presence filter allowing bright, moderate, or dark tone characteristics. This video only tested the e906 flat. The bright is a bit closer to the 57, the dark is like the standard e609 if I recall correctly.

R121, a piece of mud as usual lol, so much hype on this poor and overpriced mic..

I've tried every one of these mics on different guitar cabs and none of them sounded good. Not even on a single stereo track. The Royer was probably the worst and the Beyer was probably the best, but it was still too murky sounding. The 421 is either too boomy or too gritty and the SM57 is pure crap IMO.
