Beautiful conversation ... we need more critical discussions around the intellectual compositions of political parties ... it cannot be enough to shout vote but no plan is in place.

Majority of black people do not understand politics, as a result...when it it comes to voting, they don't vote for ideas(manifestos of parties) they vote for people/political leaders. Popularity wins every time in place of actions.

Populist leaders and parties are all the rage in Europe and USA right now just as they have been in parts of the world. Demagoguery is as old as electoral politics. Trump is literally running a cult. The cognitive dissonance is palpable. Heard about Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Mao etc? Not long ago the Philippines had Rodrigo Duterte and Brazil had Jair Bolsonaro, Cuba had Castro and Venezuela had Chavez.
Manifestos are largely for chattering classes & policy hawks. Many people have an emotional response to voting. You think people who voted for apartheid and bantu education ‘understood’ politics? Think again.

Then you get to miss gems like this:
"The EFF government will restructure the ship docking arrangement such that international vessels offload their goods into our domestic fleet in the Ocean. Only domestic vessels will be allowed to dock in our harbours."
EFF got some super technology that will allow it to shift hundreds of tonnes of cargo from one boat to the next? Even though you need specialised equipment on docks to do this today?

  • @theultimatesharpshooter6734
    @theultimatesharpshooter6734 6 месяцев назад +5

It's important to understand the ideological direction of the 2 parties when reading the manifestos.
Their policy documents go into more detail on the parts you had issues witb. Manifesto is like an advertisement for those who don't have time to read all the documents.
DA's ideal state is an improved United States. Very hands off government that focuses on infrastructure, policing and foreign policy. They see the state creating the rules of the game and determining penalties rather than being an active participant.
ANC thinks of its self closer to the Asian economics (Korea, Japan, Taiwan etc...) where the State is a key driver of the economy but not soley responsible.
The issue is that we haven't really seen the ANC vision come together due to endemic corruption plaguing the state.
We haven't seen the DA vision either since they have never had control over key infrastructure like rail, electricity and policing which are crucial to enforcing the rules of the game.

I think the right to work is crucial. I know there will be some abuse against workers, but to be unemployed is mind bending. You become hopeless and mired in a pit of learned helplessness. There are people in this country approaching 40 who has never worked in their lives, and in fact now needs to save for their pension. If you can work as an intern, at least you can show the experience on your CV. I also disagree that the EFF's election manifesto is too long. As long as they dont use jargon and lingo only suitable for academics, its a useful reference for someone who is for example torn between a vote for the PAC and the EFF. I like your outfit by the way. Very fashionable.

How will that work, the commonality might be that they are all ‘descent and mean well’ but they are ideologically different. That collegiality might work in a government of national unity for example because it has a very short shelf life but as a party It will be a grid locked and they will struggle to agree on any meaningful program, leaving all members and supporters dissatisfied. ANC has over the years positioned itself as centre-left party but in its tent has largely left wing constituency and the DA has positioned itself as a centre-right party but has an obsession trying to court a right wing minority.

Great insights and a much needed analysis of both manifesto's. The ANC's problem has never been its policies (beyond a few more recent ones) but its implementation of them or lack thereof. I'd argue we need to hold our parties to higher standards and move beyond the idea that their main role is keeping us alive and well. Their job should be to get out of the way and facilitate processes that enable their constituency to thrive.

I agree with the point that political parties must communicate their manifesto in other official languages because of society composition. EFF manifesto might be "long," but this should not be a negative analysis because people are not expected to read it at once and might choose a particular issue that they think is more important to know its solution. The reason for the long EFF manifesto is exactly because of consultation and aspirations of people in society and not only the party members. I look forward to EFF manifesto analysis. Ayeye

I really don't understand why manifestos are not mandated to be issued a year before elections and testing done against voters to have the right to vote before elections.

  • @vumu9886

The think the real question lies with how we can simplify and conventionalise political literacy for the common South Africa (most especially South African youth). This can be accomplished in several ways, with what I believe to be the most effective being through foundational education (both primary and secondary), through the means of subjects like Life Orientation, holding government funded political, public conventions, tasking news stations (and other public broadcasters) with providing enlightening socio-political discussion segments (that are objective by nature), and so one.
The intention is to normalise political discourse, and engender a societal-wide political affinity and disposition, especially from a younger age, which will help counter act the general sense of political apathy that is rampantly persisting amongst the youth.

Good talking points Tessa . I have a question , why do you think it’s soo important for these parties to keep healthy individuals dependent on government grants. Why can’t the manifesto lay out clear pathways which will create job opportunities for the young and healthy South Africans rather than handouts. These handouts are killing the young and healthy generation and it makes people to depend on handouts. This is killing the nation. Let the manifesto talk about Boarder, economy, safety and job opportunities. All these years these parties comes with these beautiful manifestos but nothing comes to pass .

"34.19" Labour costs. This is the main reason why the jobless rate will not go down but increase further. Remember, the entrepreneur is a job creator. He or she requires labour based on demand from the market. With the advent of artificial intelligence, more young people unfortunately will stay at home.
The government needs to introduce policies that encourage investment, both local and foreign (reducing the tax rate as an example), push for new national heroes (South Korea and China have businesses that were given privileges to succeed) whose companies are export driven towards the African continent. At the same time the cost of living must be reduced so that workers can live off their wages.
All this requires meticulous studies and strategies but most of all it requires people willing to implement the policies.

The ANC should take these analysis by Tessa as a red flag. The main goal of the ANC during its formation was to achieve a democratic society and the driver for this goal was Black Consciousness through which Black people would be empowered to the same competitive level as White people. If the analyst thinks that there is very little difference between the ANC and DA manifesto then it means that the ANC has lost Black Consciousness as its driver.
Financial gains of most Black people under Ramaphosa ANC have been reversed. Ramaphosa is more interested in pleasing the White people.

It will also give them an opportunity to possible impress there employer and promote them with better salary and more responsibility. Ask any young person and they will tell you that they just want a foot in the door to prove themselves and the DA stance will provide this. Anc promised freedom and it delivered. People must admit it, we dont want freedom we want people in leadetship that will baby sit us. Anc has left us to fend for ourselves(given us freedom) and now we are crying for people that will baby sit us. Apartheit was the best baby sitter we've had so far hence people say it was better than what the Anc has given us.

There is no freedom with out economic freedom.
Yes they won us freedom … but threw us under the bus when it comes to economics and our natural resources that can help build our country and economy, we own nothing !!!!

The role of a government is give the people a stable foundation in order to pursue their own freedom. This includes quality education, safety, health care etc and in south africa maintenance of our infrastructure. Haven't done their job since 2007 those guys.

I’m a second year student, but your argument is not valid with the greatest respect. How many people can really say they are free, I mean just at the cost of living? More than half of this country is living in poverty, this ANC of yours may have “freed” us from Apartheid, but have they really? No person of color owns a bank in this country or insurance company. Today we still see many profitable industries in this country that are dominated by the minority. 18 million people receive some form of social welfare in this country, is that really freedom? Tinstwalo is unemployed, struggling to make ends meet, tired of looking for a job, tired of not having her struggles as a citizen being brought to the fore and is extremely frustrated of all that’s happening in this country. So if you classify that as “freedom” then yes they have done the job extremely well. I’m a 2000 and I’d like to think that we don’t give a damn about what they did 30 years ago, what are they doing today?
They have collapsed a lot of SOE’s in this country that where in working order when they inherited them. I think the truth is that they were a liberation movement and nothing more. Time and time again they have shown us that they can’t lead because they are to consumed by greed, incompetence and a sense of seriousness and accountability. As a black person I cannot fathom that many people died so they could have the opportunity they have now to lead, the least they could do is make sure they don’t squander it, but we can all determine how they have performed.
And I don’t think any sane adult would like be dependent on a government to get by, but that’s just me.

Even though I never during Apartheid I can assure it was not as rosy as you make it sound. Do you understand what you are saying with the “Apartheid” was better? People being excluded forcefully from participating in the economy was a good thing😮?
