  • I started restoring a pile of rust roughly shaped like some hand planes. This includes a Millers Falls no. 14 (Stanley No. 5 clone), Stanley Handyman No. 4, and a Stanley No. 110.
To briefly outline the prep process, I did a vinegar bath of all metal parts to free up the rust, scrubbed the rust off, and dunked all parts in a baking soda bath to ensure the vinegar causes no further corrosion. Any remaining rust and corrosion was removed with steel and brass brush wheels. All finished steel surfaces were sanded with 80, 120 and 220 grit in this stage. A rust-stopping primer was used, followed by enamel paint. Prep and assembly next week!
Thanks to Keith Decent for the Millers Falls adjustment knob I was missing, and for the entire no. 4 plane! Go check out his channel!

handy tip for cleaning these guys off: you can chuck those knobs into your drill with the mounting screw and then sand them like it was a lathe. These are looking great, cant wait for part 2!

You may want to go back and sand the flat surfaces with some wet/dry paper on a piece of thick glass/marble/slate to make sure everything is flat and true, the orbital tends to round things off and create low spots on a smaller surface like those. I am kind of excited to see how the blue turns out.

theduck Thanks! Probably lightly, but I won't put that much time into it. Given the condition these started in, I wouldn't be able to get them as perfect as most want to see. I plan on only using them for rough work anyways.
