  • Part I Here: • Hand Plane Restoration...
This time, we complete the hand plane restoration! Got my hands on a more correct lever cap for the no.14, had all the irons sharpened, then did some final clean up and assembly.
I'm still working on getting them dialed in, but I'm very happy with the result. Thanks for sticking with me!
Huge shout out to Keith Decent for the no.4 plane and the adjustment knob for the no.14, and to Hand Tool Rescue for the advice and checking out my videos!

I could be wrong, but it looks like you have the irons in backwards. Bevel should be down in most cases. Great video!

messrsinferno Good catch :) It was late while I was filming and I wasn’t paying attention. They’re in correctly now, fixed that when I went to try them out.

RhodyJeff I figured you would have caught that, but the rare chance you missed it, I thought i would double check.

You put the chip breakers on the wrong side of the irons.

Replied to another comment a while back. I made the mistake while filming late at night. Realized and fixed it the next day.

Good job. The blues and reds look particularly good ... I have an old Handyman I've never messed with, and the colors look relly close. What colors did you use (and from where)?

Jim K As far as the black colors on other planes, the finish used on them is called “Japanning” and is a little harder to find. I used a cheapo gloss black enamel I had lying around. Have to buy online basically. For the blue, it’s rustoleum 7723 Navy, though I’d go a shade darker if I did it again. The red is rustoleum 7762 Sunrise Red. The primer was rustoleum 7769830 rusty metal primer.
You want an enamel gloss paint, lay it on thick in 2-3 coats less than an hour between each, and don’t touch it for 3-4 days. Best way to get that almost candy finish on these sorts of parts.
      Thanks for watching!
