I saw this band perform at Koerner Hall, Toronto last night. Was in the second row at the front and half the time I could not hear Bernstein play his brass. The odd time the trumpet solos came out loud and clear, but most of the time not, when he played his euphonium, could not hear it and only some slide trumpet especially when he moved over near another player's microphone. They are a great band, no doubt, not sure if the sound system was at fault. Other big disappointment was no encore number -everyone was giving a standing ovation....what's up here, too posh? They played a little over one hour, with no intermission, even though the mc said here would be an intermission at the show start. A lot of people thought the intermission was starting when the show was over, too bad. THREE STAR RATING
Not sure of everybody, but: Henry Butler - piano Steven Bernstein - trumpet (I guess a euphonium in this case) Herlin Riley - drums Reginald Veal - bass Matt Munisteri - guitar Erik Lawrence - sax Doug Wieselman - clarinet Maybe someone else can add more or make any corrections...?
Extremely sad to report the passing of masterful pianist and a true gentleman, Henry Butler. RIP Henry. Fortunately for us, his music lives on.
Smokin'. Old jazz with a modern flair. Great ensemble...and Henry's hands!
Just heard it 91.9 and had to look it up!
