This should’ve been better with Sonic based on the Sonic 2 8 Bit Bad Ending, where Sonic tried to save Tails, but couldn’t, and Tails somehow either disappeared or died.

My take on this is that this takes place after an alternate ending of SA2 where Sonic Sacrifices himself instead of Shadow. In order to stop the ark from crashing in to the earth. Once shadow returns on bored everyone else wonder where Sonic went until Shadow tells them what happened. Everyone is shocked and saddened by this news in particular Amy and tails who’s been by Sonic since the beginning. Amy falls down while tails is confronting her.
Knuckles punches Shadow telling him that he shouldn’t gone instead of Sonic. Eggman sneaks out of the Ark while everyone is distracted by the news. And soon after everything set and clear they leave the ark and and say their goodbyes. Sometime later tho tails would slowly fall in the 7 states of grief eventually not being able to work on machines anymore.
He just at Emerald Hill Zone waiting for his Big bro best buddy to return but with no avail. Its then boyfriend and girlfriend (aka XML and Gf) come to see why our little fox friend is so depressed about and so the song begin
