    • @7up-dp1kk
      @7up-dp1kk 29 дней назад +22

Exactly. And anyway, it is not our goal. In terms of military power, we will increase integration with European Union. This is the long term policy. Arms export and credibility is part of this integration we look for, but a segment of it. When EU and UK décide joint maritime patrols, it is in conjunction with US decision to decrease presence in Mediteranean sea, Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean. USA has a lot to do in Asia right now, so we help as we can and mature our project this way. The goal at the end would be joint patrol till after Singapore. And let’s put it mildly, we are on a fraction of what we aim for currently. Luckily, UK, Italy, Netherland, Poland and Germany understand very well what is at stake and are starting to make things happen. Their are hiccups, since except it UK, Italy and France, most of European navy had a limited training level, but it is rising steadily. We hope to be ready in due time. Sailors numbers have been doubled on French ships, to ensure better availability. Same thing with onboard level of armement, which is rising before our eyes. The quantity of hull though is not fully adequate. And this will take some time to be fixed. Longer than armement or crew training.

Its equipment is reliable, proven, much cheaper to use because it is designed in this way, it often relies on civilian technologies to easily increase production at a lower cost.

Balance of power, etc… One thing may be considered though, France is part of the 🇪🇺, which is not so integrated as China or USA, but necessity make thing appear faster than many would imagine. France is more than 1000 years old, with moments of glory and moments of rough times. It remain to be seen if USA or China in the current format will last this long. And if not, what will it look like… The Chinese view on the possibility of union collapse is far more mature than US view, which looks at best unthought. Lately, we are all intrigued by the polarization of US political discussions. We hope it will get better and people will calm down and settled issues, though the divide and impossility of local political changes, lack of dialog is really concerning. •  29 дней назад +1

Don't get too excited. Basically, here's the point of view of France : the USA are running a protection racket, and France is not interested in joining. Trump is the first president to say it out loud. Kissinger was more subtle: "From the point of view of division of labor, the US considers French resources better spent on conventional forces than on nuclear arms".
France has excellent reasons to consider that the US are an ambiguous ally. From the Suez crisis, France, UK and Israel learnt an important lesson about the balance of powers ("No nation has friends, only interests" said Charles de Gaulle), but reacted quite differently : UK and Israel by aligning, France by pursuing an independent strategic route. The French nuclear arsenal amongst other programs was developed, simply because France doesn't believe for one second that the US would actually defend Europe (apart if they would directly benefit from it, economically or strategically). France assumed that the US wouldn't use nuclear weapons to retaliate against USSR if they would strike Europe first (as mutual destruction is not in the US interest) ; and France also assumed that the USSR knew that as well, which nullified the deterrence. Kissinger again: "Precisely because he is sure that the US will protect Europe in the immediate future, [De Gaulle] wants to use this respite to establish insurance for the far future. He is looking ahead to a time when present leaders will have disappeared and American attention may be focused on other continents".
France has been advocating for a strong independent Europe for 6 decades (and some would say: going as far as accepting arrangements detrimental to its own interests). The US had a different project: Europe should be a buffer against USSR, but never develop as a power that could challenge the balance of powers (one major aspect of the plan : ensure that the Paris-Berlin-Moscow axis never exist).

Prior to the Russo-Ukranian war, Moscow was in line to become a top client for French arms exports. They were gonna buy 3-4 Mistral Class helicopter carriers. France had built the first two and were almost ready to deliver. The next two would have had significant construction done in Russia, transferring French naval knowhow that Russia lacks. The Kremlin claims they are just gonna build their own helicopter carriers now that France isn't gonna help them. But whatever Russia builds will be junk compared to the deal they had in place to get working ships from France and a master-level class on how to build them.

France has always been a formidable military power in Europe. They are also an exellent alternative to many nations for arms sales to governments who do not want to buy from the Americans, Russians, or Chinese. They have a capable, professional Army, Navy, and Air Force that is well armed and equipped. The Foreign Legion is one of the best expeditionary forces in the world. And they are a nuclear power. France is one of the quiet bad@sses in the EU militarily. And has been for a while. Bottom line; France can hold its own militarily. Unlike many of its EU neighbors.

We may also see countries such as Mexico and Indonesia greatly surpass Russia in GDP.
It may harder and harder for Russia to continue to pretend that it is a great power if so many countries exceed it in population and GDP..

France is a great power though in what place I'm unsure of to say. Quite a few countries of similar or greater strength these days to France. Like India, japan, israel, Brazil, Mexico, for example outside of Europe are similar or greater. In Europe it be germany, Poland, Italy, spain(Spain I can say is probably weaker but their a high secondary power or low great power in terms of strength), united kingdom, turkey, and probably a few others I'm missing. France has too many similar strength or stronger countries to be a super power. At best their a mid level or high level great power probably below India or Russia so around 5th to 10th strongest I'd put them. So usa, china, russia/India for 3rd and 4th, than France might be 5th strongest or at least could argue it.

More seriously, I've always wondered why France's military equipment was not more popular. In my opinion, they currently have the best quality/price ratio. The rafale is a marvel, Leclerc is a bit old but as mentioned proved far more resilient and capable than the competitors, to mention only these 2. I'm especially disapointed that European countries still chose to buy american rather than French, particularly today when we all know that american support in case of was is not 100% sure.

    I will say two things
    1) Western equipment is far superior in almost every aspect but a key drawback for these technologies is that they are far too expensive to produce and the cost to maintain the weapon systems is too. If the Ukraine conflict is teaching us anything is that cheap, and easy to build weapon systems and designs will ultimately outperform the higher quality weapons. We cannot underestimate a peak Russian wartime economy moving into next year. Ukraine, unless they get additional funding and supply for additional anti air weapon systems then their production centers will not be able to compete with Russia.
2)Our countries are giving aid with stipulations and that is not how war is being fought by the Russians. They are literally sending everything they have at the Ukrainians, while they have to fight a war under supplied and with outdated expensive western equipment. The West is fractured by Russian aggression and Macron is seeing the writing on the wall. This only ends one way.

I am French. I think right now, we are in a good moment. Our future will rely on two different streams: European partnership and indopacific (Indian especially)/arabian partnerships for normal systems. For very special systems, like hypersonic, aircraft carriers, we will continue a policy of cooperation with USA. With Europe, cooperation can last forever. MGCS, SCAF, Maritime, Twister are good Examples of this. With info pacifique partners, a question still remain on how prolonged it can be since in 2040, India by itself will be very strong. Since India is close to French Islands, we will want to maintain good ties in the long run. Same thing with Egypt, Indonesia, Singapore, EAU and Qatar, on one of the main way to our Pacifique Islands. The incentive for cooperation will remain strong, either through Radar, Rafale, submarines or MBT and coming evolutions. With USA, our mathematicians may be a good boost to US hypersonic gliders, as scientific and economic cooperation and competition has been a driver for US and Europe to stay at the forefront of innovation. Russia will play their cards as well, but Russi is in a tough spot, for reasons we have little to do with. Quality of Russian jets without French Avionics is dropping. China will rely on home industry, since they don’t need Russian motors anymore. India and Vietnam, traditional importers of Russian equipments are worried on how close Russians are to China, since China is the biggest threat to their sovereignty. We (French) have nothing to do with these developments. I wished we were masterminds of this, but we work only on what we can do (techno and prod) and try to sell. The position our competitors places themselves is not something we can work or plan for, or if so, very marginally.

And both are doing some competition/exercises together (US and France are allied), Rafale got some results despite being "low cost". And also much more reliable. @@flavius5722 UK and Italy have STOVL, which is not the same as CATOBAR launch.
Garibaldi was commissioned in 1985, Cavour in 2008, Trieste in 2022 (which is an Helicopter Landing dock btw).
Today's UK has Prince of Wales (STOVL launched in 2019) and Queen Elizabeth (STOVL launched in 2017). Back in 1984, time when France left, they had 2 STOVL (Illustrious & Invincible)...with no catapults, which is precisely what makes the Eurofighter not compatible with France's carriers : the front part cannot support the catapult, and surely not the CATOBAR system. Also fun to note that France is one of the two countries having mastered Electromagnetic catapults (the other being the US, of course).
STOVL is simpler, but STOBAR or CATOBAR allow for a better operationnal function, as your planes can carry heavier equipement. The comparison is that a CATOBAR launched Rafale can bring 9,5 tons of material while a STOBAR Launched Sukhoi can bring 6,5 tons of material. Also, catapulting means higher range of operation. If you still use STOVL, you're basically saying that you'll use the F-35, meaning you'll have an operating range of roughly 950 km. Basically, by designing STOVL ships and non-STOVL Eurofighter, it was said that they would buy F-35B Carriers capable, which is not in line with an "European Defense Force". But could have been, if the Eurofighter was designed to be STOVL or Catapult-able, like the French requested.
Also important to note that atlhough less effective than the Rafale, the Eurofighter is nearly twice expensive (272 Millions vs 142 millions).
Charles de Gaulle was deployed for Afghanistan (starting 2001), Lybia, Syria - in which it projected around 1800 attack missions, Iraq (in 2015, not 2003). The ship even gained the American decoration MUC. Before that the Clemenceau was used for the civil war in Yugoslavia (along Garibaldi). France project its force all around the world, be it for its own interest, NATO interest or UN missions, way more than its European allies. This is also because France has the second largest ZEE, and interests all around the globe. Just because you don't know it happened, does not mean it did not happen.
I'm all open to criticize France's military forces and France political stance in Europe, but let's not make it worse than it is (and let's not pretend Germany and UK were/are the "good guys" there)

In comparaison to russia, us, and china we are a tiny nation in term of military capability, our shell production capacity for a year is used in one week in ukraine, we have 3 days of ammunition in stock for a high intensity conflict.
This is all said everyday on news channels in france. I mean we have all the equipement needed but we are a specialized army not a massive army and numbers count when nuclear powers gets in conflicts and none of them wants to use it.

Weird T-72 at 15.49. Looks oddly more like a Centurion.
