2018 Volkswagen Touareg (ENG) - Premium SUV? - Test Drive and Review

  • 2018 Volkswagen Touareg is the third generation of VW's range topping SUV. Volkswagen now calls the Touareg a premium SUV, and sure enough with all the features the car feels and costs premium. New Volkswagen Touareg can still tow up to 3.5 tons, but gone are optional diff locks. With optional air suspension it can wade in water up to 580 mm deep, and the 15" Innovision infotainment display is probably larger, than your laptop. But most impressive are the ride quality and agility of the new Volkswagen Touareg.

    Great video! Out of all the platform it shares, I think this is the best compared to the Bentayga, Cayenne, Urus, and Q7.

    This is the best SUV on the market bar none when it comes to classy elegant looks, technology, design. It’s simple and not overstated. Just beautiful! Job well done VW please do not change your course. Love the chrome front end.
    We don’t want cars that drive themselves. Please do not make the mistake of going to the space ship look and autonomous. I prefer to stay in control of driving.

    I presume that since there is no longer an 'offroad' package that there is also no longer the option of a two speed transfer box? This is fairly essential for towing 3.5 tons on steep yards of hilly terrain. More precisely it is useful when towing offroad but essential for reversing. This is because reverse is always higher geared than 1st and with between 2.75 and 3.5 ton trailer on the back it needs steady progress that the torque converter's stall speed cannot provide. This is a major failing of the automatic Amarok pickup as well, and rules it out for many prospective customers.

    great video Marek. Just wanted your advise if this better than the Audi Q7, also would u compare it to the Cayenne.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад +1

      Q7 is quite old now, so Touareg definitely has better tech, and IMO drives better. But it doesn't have 3rd row of seats option, which Q7 has. As far as Cayenne is concerned, that's a different league. A sports car, which happens to have an SUV body.

    What is the cost of this particular model in Poland?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад +1

      It's more or less the same price as in Germany. Starts at 60k euro. A good one is 80-85k.

    Finally someone who mentioned the ergonomic problem with this awful position of the air vents

    • @vladsaghin7644
      @vladsaghin7644 6 лет назад

      Kostas S. I don't know if you saw but there is a huge vent on top of the screen in the dashboard which points to the cabin. The combination of that vent and the lower ones can direct airflow like normal vents. It's a bit like the Tesla Model 3's system in a way

    • @miraklara457
      @miraklara457 6 лет назад

      Vlad Saghin Yeah you are right. At first glance it seems awkward but if you watch it carefully you understand that it is a vent.

  • @hedydd2

    What do I think of it? It's a lovely car. The only drawback apart from, I suspect, a lack of low range box that used to be available, is the front end styling. The best I can say about the front is that it lacks artistic flair and tastefulness. However, looking on the bright side, it is 10 times better looking than the grotesque RR Cullinan.

    Can you please take a test drive of the Bentley Bentayga?

  • @fofocho71
    @fofocho71 6 лет назад

    Great video, as usual. Just one comment: you always review the top of the range model (e.g. Touareg 3.0, Cayenne Turbo, GLC 350, etc) while 90% of potential buyers will be more interested in lower engines/trims of the same cars you review

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад +2

      Whenever possible I ask for lower trim/engine version, but press fleets in Poland rarely include them, because they want to show off the best they have. As far as Touareg is concerned, the 231 hp diesel version (still v6) is not yet in production.

  • @vikster1877
    @vikster1877 6 лет назад

    Other reviewers complain that this engine has a turbo lag. What's your opinion of this engine in comparison to the V 6 petrol which would u recommend for a mix of city and highway driving

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад +1

      I haven't tried the V6 petrol, because it wasn't available at the launch event.

    North Americans aren't getting this vehicle. I guess the new Atlas Cross Sport concept shown will be offered in it's place. Funny but I'm glad about this. This looks ok but to my eye the Cross sport looks much more unique. This looks alright but it is kind of nondescript. Anyways, solid review Marek!

      kevin n, these are facts. The German built Touareg didn't sell well in North America. Neither did the German built Passat. I guess thats why we no longer get either vehicle, and subbed them both with U.S. built replacements. The Passat, and the Atlas. Personally, I prefer the German built models.

    I really don't understand how people, even rich people, could survive without all this electronic shiit and comfort possibilities some years ago. Many things come across to me as being created to enlarge the price-list but won't be used then in daily life.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 лет назад +1

      Remember BMWs from the early 80s, and how advanced their on-board diagnostics systems were? Of course, there were based on tiny red light-bulbs, but this was cutting edge at the time. People always bought premium, because it was well-made, comfortable, powerful, and had the latest tech.
