The main difference I'm seeing here is the lack of gore - people forget but the Army Men games were EXTREMELY gory. When I was 14 my family relocated from the west to the east coast. I was a big plastic model maker, with about 15 different armor, including tanks, howitzers, troop transport, and airplanes. There was an area near my house, a stalled subdivision construction, with piles of dirt, debris, and the like. Small weeds and puddles gave some realism to battlefield conditions, at least in my mind. I took all my stuff and 150 soldiers over there and had a great battle. Lighting things on fire, blowing up with firecrackers, and generally, creating so much black smoke from the plastic burning that the local Fire Dept. came to put it all out after I high-tailed it into the nearby woods before they arrived. So much fun I had that day.
The part with the plane getting shot down and transitioning to the kid crashing the plane into to the tank and the transition back to the fighting was some saving private ryan type shi
