Lawyer challenges Māori academic about tikanga hui

Tīmoti Kāretu was challenged in the high court in Wellington today about his definition of what a tikanga Māori hui was. The co-chair of the Kōhanga Reo national trust was questioned in court about a tikanga hui that was secretly recorded by Toni Waho - a former trustee who brought the case to the high court in relation to his claims of misspending of trust funds. a tikanga maori hui is a meeting or series of meetings carried out by individuals or groups of maori in order to debate, clarify, create and/or negate a set of rules or an official position regarding the laws, customs, procedures, consensus of thAt group or individual, only maori can set maori customary laws or tikanga....not the crown or the nz courts. article 2 of the treaty guarantees this absolute authority remains in maori hands when dealing with issues of a maori nature

Sounds like Toni Waho a former trustee has an axe to grind here ? Whats with him secretly recording a tikanga hui ? That alone comes across as suspect, cowardly and its a bit gutless if you ask me.
