@@GottaBeFrank I remember a meme about this particular version of the game that happens in the opening stage involving Zero encouraging the player to buy the upgrades in the game
For what it's worth, the sprites seem to be actually redrawn, not filtered. What makes it look bad is that it's missing *loads* of animation frames that make it look stilted and way more like a 2004 flash based game.
Alot of the background tiles are obviously just a smoothed out using an hq filter though. You can achieve similar results by using the hq4x filter in a SNES emulator. You can tell by looking at how the cracked roads look.
That's true in some cases, The player's sprite definitely got the most attention and a few static boss sprites, but most enemies and bosses look like they were upscaled with a filter and briefly touched up to not look too obvious (although I really wish they did a second pass at Spark Mandrill's teeth 😨). Stage tiles were just upscaled since that would be a too much work for a mobile title.
I just wanna say THANKKK YOOUUUUU for shining light on this god damn crappy app. I played for a solid week and ultimately was like “Why did it have to come to this?”
I actually liked the hand-drawn recreations of the original sprites, but hated that they weren't updated to at least 30FPS with extra sprites to smooth out the animations. For me, I'd consider that to be the definitive style for a remake since MHX looks pretty blocky nowadays.
If the framerate was improved, with those extra sprites, I would probably enjoy this art style. Maverick Hunter X's blocky look is probably due to the limitations of the hardware and the low resolution of the PSP (480x272).
"Fun" fact, as a pixel artist who spent WAY too long with the SNES and mobile spritesheets: It's 30fps on the original. The mobile version cut from 1/3rd to half of the original animation frames.

This was my first Mega Man game ever and I really enjoyed it when I played, despite not being good at the game, but I still managed to beat it. After going back to it recently, I’ve been able to see all of it’s shortcomings and has made me want to play the original version of the game.
The only positive I can say about the IOS version, is that it introduced me to the X series when I was young. Other than that? I would say burn it but it’s an app so.... *Erase it*
So quick tip about the controls: you can tap one button and hold it on the screen to keep it in effect, and then slide your finger to a different button to perform that action as well. For example, to dash-jump, you would press the dash button, and then slide your finger to the jump button while keeping your finger on the screen.
My feelings at the start. "How dare you talk about MMX SNES that way. Oh...ok you got me". "HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT MMX PSP THAT WAY..oh...damn it you got me again."
You know whats funny? This port was actually released really close to a megaman 2 ios port... which was a 1:1 port of the nes game with a save system instead of passwords, an additional EASY difficulty thats even easier than the NES' normal mode which was listed as the NORMAL setting in this port and the ability of replaying stages to get more e tanks. With the only cuts being the pipi easter egg being removed. Hell it even runs at 60 fps! ... unfortunate that it was delisted and replaced with "megaman 2 mobile" which was based on... the java port...
I remember that Mega Man 2 port! I played it when I needed to kill some time and it was alright. The controls held it back, but native controller support was not an option.
This is why mobile games can't work. They would need a controller, maybe a bluetooth one of some kind. Touch screens are only good for point and click style gameplay, that's why most of them are puzzle, strategy, and turn based jrpg style games.
The game needs to be made around the limitations of the touch screen. I've seen a few fps games that, somehow, make it work. It'll never match up to a console or PC experience, but it gets the job done.
Not all mobile ports of classic games are bad. The mobile ports of the classic Sonic games are pretty good. Screen size is right, you can mess with the opacity, and the fact that the only button is jump makes the Sonic games lend themselves well to that kind of control scheme. I sadly remember this horribly phoned in iOS port. I'm glad someone got to talk about this horrendous experience and feel their soul get sucked out of them in real time for our entertainment.
I kinda applaud the overhauled visuals in terms of interpreting all the pixel art in the game into solid drawings, but it's still a bit like....ehhhhhhhhhhh.
What was it with early 2010s mobile re-releases and absolutely terrible graphical redesigns? The old Final Fantasy rereleases had absolutely terrible graphics (despite ironically being better than the newer pixel remasters in every other regard) as well. I don't get why Capcom even put in the effort to redraw all the graphics when they were clearly phoning in every other aspect of this port.
This was my first ever Mega Man game and you know what, yeah, it's very flawed. Heck, you showing the comparisons between the graphics and frame rate of the original just highlights those problems and yeah, the button layout was quite jank. All this said, I still remember fondly playing the game and wouldn't mind going back to it if I could. Would I play it over the original? Hell nah, pixel art will always be 1 million times better. And frame rate just looks and feels better. But yeah, I don't regret playing it back when I was a kid. And if you don't mind me asking, can you provide the link to the mobile and/or PC emulator? I'd love to play the original for the first time. Thank you in advance and good video. Really enjoyed your commentary.
I think those play store reviews were from Capcom themselves just like when Square made a ton of positive fake reviews on metacritic for Balan Wonderworld.
Who thought Mega Man with on-screen buttons was a good idea in the first place?! Mega Man games require way too much precision for such clunky controls.
You had me worried for a minute. I thought you were gonna say the original old SNES game was horrible. 😂 I was like are you nuts? But you meant, mobile. I never played any old games on mobile, specifically because I already foresaw there'd be problems. Normally, some things you can learn to adapt to with a little work, but something like that, you're asking for trouble.
I wanna say this about MHX, while I like the X storyline, the Vile storyline is a fun idea, but they chose to make EVERY LEVEL except the final have the same song, and it's obnoxious and draining to listen to
The funny thing is I never even heard of this game until a couple of years after it came out. Needless to say, I even tried it, but quickly got annoyed with it, especially with the whole D pad thing like you mentioned. And ironically, it would be even later than that that I would find out just like me, a lot of people hated it.
The quality is so horrid! The ui is so bad, this looks worse than most fan games, whoever developed this and designed the look should be ashamed of themselves for allowing money over morals, and if they think they did a good job, JESUS. The art is some of the worst I’ve ever seen, and then they tiled so many assets.
Unless you select the option to show the entire screen. Then you get something resembling the original. The sprites aren't large because it defaults to being zoomed in.
You know what was a good port of _Mega Man X?_ The MS-DOS version by Rozner Labs. Yes, the music is too fast and the Ride Armor is non-existent, but for the time, it was super delightful! Also, you can absolutely make the game run *way too fast,* which is hilarious and fun~
Amidst all the quality early 2010s mobile games this has got to be...well, disappointing to be honest. You had wonderful games like Gun Bros and even a mobile port of Dead Space and then there's Megaman mobile titles...even the mobile Assassin's Creed and Battlefield titles by Gameloft were more decent. Like damn. But man, the old Game Center logo still hits hard.
Yknow I played this a lot in my teens, it was fun to have on the go but I hated how specifically dash jumps controlled, the game was just not made for the phone. Microtransactions were stupid but it was kinda fun to play through the first stage with the first armour and all powers. As a novelty it was kinda neat for the time, just dunno why they made it for that game, why not do something new? I spent more time with mhx in the future after getting a psp at the time. My first experience with the x series was x 8 and then later the collection though, good memories with those. The lc was a great thing to happen for me as well, super happy it happened. Gotta restart my x 8 playthrough some time on my channel and get it done right
And people still care about the Street Fighter Move? I never did. The way to eventually get it was way too far out for me to even consider. What a stupid way to unlock it. In X2 the
I refuse to watch this and gave a thumbs down because your bait. Which is ashame because this is probably a good video, i just wont respect cheap tricks. Don't ever do this bait trick again and just let your talent speak for itself.
I had to quit DiVE. I was spending too much money and time on it...and after a while it just wasn't fun. The new characters aren't all that interesting because they're all just walking overpowered super moves. PVP is atrocious because of this. It just...doesn't have any real thought behind it.
I would never buy a mobile game expecting it to be good if it was based on action, precision, reflexes, etc. You just can't get the kind of control you need on a touchpad. We've had these things that fit in two hands for decades now, full of little buttons that you could push...
Before play the video I thought you gonna be talking about the MS DOS Release of Mega Man X which came in 1995, which despite removing the slowdown in some instances, had some weird things like... No mech piloting, and lack of some transparency effects. And the game felt jank to me. On the iOS game, is a fascinating product from it's time and Capcom was at their low, with some questionable choices. Also, it was kinda of a tendency from publishers trying to milk some money releasing shitty versions on iOS? Remember the UMK 3?
Had to double check. Nope. They all run at a very choppy framerate. You can achieve something close to 60 by putting it in turbo, but then you're also increasing the game speed.
Here's a bit of a hot take. Other than the uneven health bars of the SNES games of the first X Legacy Collection, *I have absolutely no idea why everyone treats the smoothing option like it's Satan.* Turn it off. Move on. Say it's not your thing. Because holy hell the way people had their mind-blowing reaction to Battle Network Legacy Collection and mid-way through they go "EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW SMOOTHING" as if it wasn't optional disgusts the hell out of me. They treat that optional filter like it murdered their dog and I'm getting immensely sick of the over-reaction.
This was my first Megaman (snes) game way back then. Yup, it's disappointing that conquering a specific boss no longer affects the other certain stage.
lol I was actually upset with the first fake out, like shaking my fist at the screen and plotting your demise kind of angry. I think Megaman X is the best retro game on the Nintendo, right next to Castlevania on the playstation
I think using something like a SNES emulator would come with its own issues. iPhones were a lot smaller then, so a lot of screen space would be used up by buttons, making it harder to see.

I played this on my iPad, so the App Store is your best bet.
I was furiously typing out a pissed off comment and then I heard the switch. Well-played.
I'm glad you gave it enough time for the switch to happen lol
"Remember, you have not reached your full power yet.
But for $3.99 you CAN!!!"
I mean, it would be fun for going through the game as overpowered as possible, but why not unlock that as a mode? I'm sure the answer is $.
I played a Super Nintendo version and that version rocks
It's one of the most replayable games, for me.
To whoever is thinking about getting this, just get an emulator and rom.
i genuinely can't believe that this re-released on android for _double the price_
Oh yeah. Thankfully the DLC is included, rather than behind a paywall.
I think those play store reviews were from Capcom themselves just like when Square made a ton of positive fake reviews on metacritic for Balan Wonderworld.
My brother in law actually loves the mobile port and that's when I stopped trusting his opinion on video games.
The music is $3 because of licensing
Who thought Mega Man with on-screen buttons was a good idea in the first place?! Mega Man games require way too much precision for such clunky controls.
You had me worried for a minute. I thought you were gonna say the original old SNES game was horrible. 😂 I was like are you nuts? But you meant, mobile. I never played any old games on mobile, specifically because I already foresaw there'd be problems. Normally, some things you can learn to adapt to with a little work, but something like that, you're asking for trouble.
Well if you're gonna be frank, can I be charlie?
Nice!
But your username says Braden
Why does this remind me somewhat of the sonic mobile game before Whitehead redid it?
I don't know. I think the Backbone Sonic ports were passable, despite having awful audio.
I wanna say this about MHX, while I like the X storyline, the Vile storyline is a fun idea, but they chose to make EVERY LEVEL except the final have the same song, and it's obnoxious and draining to listen to
Yeah. Probably the weirdest idea for the entire remake.
2:25 that thing is easier to overlook when Its smaller sprites compared to the IOS game who have so gigantic sprites
Unless you select the option to show the entire screen. Then you get something resembling the original. The sprites aren't large because it defaults to being zoomed in.
6:26 am I the only one who finds the “Hachoo-ken” joke hilarious !?
Yeah. It took me back to when I would play a bunch of games on my old iPod Touch. Super Mega Worm and Monster Dash were my go-to games.
X for existing in this realm is pain
In X2 the
Just because you never cared for it, doesn't mean others don't have to. Besides, it's a one shot kill for anything... that doesn't block it.
The mobile version of Mega Man X is the Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for GBA of Mega Man games.
No. This game is consistent. That is something I can't say about Sonic 1 GBA.
We've had these things that fit in two hands for decades now, full of little buttons that you could push...
nice job on the double bait lol, but as soon as you said that it wasn't maverick hunter, ooo.. I knew what version you were talking about lol.
Good to know people stay to the end of the opening to see where the video's going.
you baited me successfully i was stretching ready to furious type nerd stuff at you when you said megaman x was bad
I mean, I wasn't wrong. I was just not specifying which one I was talking about.
You wanna know what’s funny? they recently just ported this to android
Yeah... I know. I still don't know how to feel about that.
That intro is a good way to scare someone.
Yeah. I got a few people, but thankfully they all got it and got a good laugh out of it.
6:41 actually it’s only classing Megaman 1 that has that issue, the others mobile ports from 2 to 6 run at 60 fps
Had to double check. Nope. They all run at a very choppy framerate. You can achieve something close to 60 by putting it in turbo, but then you're also increasing the game speed.
@@GottaBeFrank weird, when playing on my phone it was only Megaman 1 that had lower frame rate but ok
Yeah. Seems like all of the games perform that way on my phone and on every video I've seen of those releases.
"Remember when Megaman X was a bad game"
Yeah....I remember Megaman X7
I try to forget it.
Me personally I didn’t really hate the experience but it was the first time i played a MMX game.
Here's a bit of a hot take.
Other than the uneven health bars of the SNES games of the first X Legacy Collection, *I have absolutely no idea why everyone treats the smoothing option like it's Satan.*
Turn it off.
Never even knew this existed, first thing I thought of when I saw the art style was that SF2 remake
This game is a great version on mmx, yall are such crybabies.
No. It's just garbage. Take the name calling back to the kiddie table.
lol I was actually upset with the first fake out, like shaking my fist at the screen and plotting your demise kind of angry. I think Megaman X is the best retro game on the Nintendo, right next to Castlevania on the playstation
I played a mobile version but it was the snes version and I loved it
It was my favourite game
I've heard the Japanese version was just an emulated SNES version, but I can't find any video or image proving it.
@@GottaBeFrank it wasnt in japanese. and It was on an ipad aswell? but it wasnt looking goofy like the game you showed
It was probably Java.
I didn't even know this existed. I wasn't missing anything apparently.
Not really missing much, except the unique art style they went with.
Phone and tablet mobile usually suck. No big surprise
2:05 Never seen this version of it.....but that IS pretty bad. The text box looks like something a child would create in ms paint.
1:26
I get that sonic the hedgehog reference lol
To be fair to the reviews: the game before that was X-Over.
Yeah. I think Capcom made the right call in ending that one. It looked... really, really bad.
Why couldn't they just make a SNES emulator that could only play MMX? Thanks to having an Android phone, I can just run the ROM in RetroArch.
I think using something like a SNES emulator would come with its own issues. iPhones were a lot smaller then, so a lot of screen space would be used up by buttons, making it harder to see.
@@GottaBeFrank Still, the game would run a lot better.
