Hey! Thanks for checking out today's video! What are your thoughts on Mega Man X iOS? Let me know in the comments!
Mm
First
Awesome video
K

So will all your videos bait this hard?
This mobile version was my first ever mega man game. I actually completed the game as a kid, which I did not do for every game let me tell you! It was actually a bit of a shock to me to learn how bad this game was years later 😅
Same
same
That's sadly the reality of some things
Especially when compared to the high standards of a Mega Man X game that isn’t X6-X7.
Same with Duke Nukem Forever 2011
It's so funny to think that playing Megaman X on a mobile emulator is better than in an official mobile release
Yeah. I'm surprised they didn't try that.
2:19 I always imagined those filters were supposed to make the game look more like the artwork and I kind of like it
It has it's moments, but it mostly doesn't look good.
@@GottaBeFrank fair point especially with that version of the game
@@GottaBeFrank I remember a meme about this particular version of the game that happens in the opening stage involving Zero encouraging the player to buy the upgrades in the game
tbh, I *really* like those kinda filters, yea they look kinda weird but thats why I like them
They're ugly, looks like someone spread mayonnaise on the screen
For what it's worth, the sprites seem to be actually redrawn, not filtered.
What makes it look bad is that it's missing *loads* of animation frames that make it look stilted and way more like a 2004 flash based game.
Yeah. If the animation was smoother, I'd probably give the game more props for the visuals.
That’s exactly what feeling I was trying to figure out, it really does look like a flash game thank you!
Alot of the background tiles are obviously just a smoothed out using an hq filter though. You can achieve similar results by using the hq4x filter in a SNES emulator. You can tell by looking at how the cracked roads look.
Very true, noticed it at the first jump
I was aware of this port's existance, so you couldn't fool me with this intro lol.
I'm glad there were a few who picked up on it.
I learned about maverick hunter rather than the ios port
I knew about the existence of a mobile port, but because I don't have an iPhone, I didn't know whether it was a bad, a cashgrabber or a genuinely good port, it turned out, it was just bad, and potentially a cashgrabber.
I knew about the existence of a mobile port, but because I don't have an iPhone, I didn't know whether it was a bad, a cashgrabber or a genuinely good port, it turned out, it was just bad, and potentially a cashgrabber.
The hadoken is a cheese skill for sigma final form giveing a helpful pro tip as a veteran megaman player
I just wanna say THANKKK YOOUUUUU for shining light on this god damn crappy app. I played for a solid week and ultimately was like “Why did it have to come to this?”
I played it once and realized I spent too much money. Then I wanted to know about the arranged music.
HOLY CRAP the intro had me malding TWICE 😂 glad I stuck around because the video turned out to be very good!
Lol i can tell he was finna get some people with it
YO POWER GUY?!
I would've agreed with him if he was talking about the SNES version. X1 is extremely mid. Maybe it's because I don't have nostalgia for it, but it just isn't as good as people make it out to be. It's good, but not a masterpiece.
@@Flabby555 i feel that fr. I liked x4 way better
@@CipherKnighto X4 is my favorite X game.
Finally, someone spoke up. Capcom was really phoning it in on these when they made them. A cheap imitation, evidently. I like this video. Very on point. Very in the nose. Well written. Well edited. Well executed. It’s good you didn’t stick to one tangent which would have ruined the steady pace. Now I know not to waste my money on these.
I should ban for that second sentence, but I will not.
Was that pun in the second sentence intended in any capacity?
@@bubbykins4864 oh no, not intended. maybe subconsciously. It was the first turn a phrase that came to mind.
"phoning in on these" I see what you did there 🥴
The same could be said of the SNES ones.
I actually liked the hand-drawn recreations of the original sprites, but hated that they weren't updated to at least 30FPS with extra sprites to smooth out the animations. For me, I'd consider that to be the definitive style for a remake since MHX looks pretty blocky nowadays.
If the framerate was improved, with those extra sprites, I would probably enjoy this art style. Maverick Hunter X's blocky look is probably due to the limitations of the hardware and the low resolution of the PSP (480x272).
"Fun" fact, as a pixel artist who spent WAY too long with the SNES and mobile spritesheets:
It's 30fps on the original. The mobile version cut from 1/3rd to half of the original animation frames.
@@GottaBeFrank I like that you can tell they ran out of time at the sigma stages and just did a blurry resize on bosses after that point
Seriously, Megaman X on iOs/Android looks like a something that 13 years old flash game made for newgrounds
I remember buying the ios version thinking it would be good but I guess not, I got Mega Man X Legacy Collection on the switch back in like June or July to play Mega Man X and it was much better than the ios version
Oh yeah. The X Legacy Collection is fantastic.
@@GottaBeFrank hi
I remember playing this version, finishing it and considering it way too easy for a Megaman experience, but as I had only played this version of X1 at the time, I was unsure when compared with X4 for the PS1 or ZX fr the DS that were really difficult.
I love to think the Megaman X Maverick Hunter X is basically Megaman Powered up with the Variable "X" added after the word "Megaman"
Same lol
This was my first Mega Man game ever and I really enjoyed it when I played, despite not being good at the game, but I still managed to beat it. After going back to it recently, I’ve been able to see all of it’s shortcomings and has made me want to play the original version of the game.
The original or the PSP remake are the best ways to play it. This mobile version isn't even close.
Megaman X snes you're welcome, the psp version is ok to play after but the original X is an amazing game and should be the one you play first
Well….. Its megaman x music is still awesome
WHY DOES THIS GAME LOOK LIKE A FLASH GAME NO WONDER WHY ITS 20 DIRHAMS I AM MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So quick tip about the controls: you can tap one button and hold it on the screen to keep it in effect, and then slide your finger to a different button to perform that action as well. For example, to dash-jump, you would press the dash button, and then slide your finger to the jump button while keeping your finger on the screen.
2:20 The "low frame rate" is also joined with the fact that some frames of the SNES version are just gone for some reason.
And the sprites are "HD".
If the game ran as smooth as the SNES version, I'd be happier with that. Not completely happy, but a bit happier.
I saw the uneven scaling as soon as the footage started and I was all like "I bet he's not gonna mention it". You've earned a sub by proving me wrong.
I thank/blame my friends for bringing stuff like that to my attention lmao
Dang, I almost like the art style, but it does look a little too Flash Gamey
If it had some extra work done and the game runs at 60fps, I would be okay with it.
me playing it on a mobile emulator:
*well does that count?*
Did you actually double tap to dash on SNES?? Ive been doing that "claw" method since i was 5
When I was younger, yes. Now I just set it to L.
I knew the first one was bait, but you really got me with the MHX fake-out... I commend you for your shenanigans.
Thank you so much. I was worried that it would make people hate the video, but thankfully it's so absurd that it can't be take seriously.
@@GottaBeFrank Well, if they can't take a joke or a prank, MAYBE they're not your target audience, y'know?
Yeah, but I've been known to commit to a joke, so it doesn't land all the time.
I mean... yeah, jokes like these are usually hit or miss, but I'd dare to say this one was pretty good at least.
The only positive I can say about the IOS version, is that it introduced me to the X series when I was young. Other than that?
I would say burn it but it’s an app so....
*Erase it*
I had a clip of me deleting it, but I forgot to use it in the video.
My feelings at the start.
"How dare you talk about MMX SNES that way. Oh...ok you got me".
"HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT MMX PSP THAT WAY..oh...damn it you got me again."
Yeah, I get that a lot... for this video lol
6:23 Maverick Hunter X also only needed to do this once
I forgot all about that lmao
Now this is what good clickbait looks like, lmao. Very awesome review.
Thank you so much!
Wait.. the video is click bait? Was about to dislike and say BRO YOU STUPID WITH “UNEVEN” SCREEN
I sadly remember this horribly phoned in iOS port. I'm glad someone got to talk about this horrendous experience and feel their soul get sucked out of them in real time for our entertainment.
Geez you made me pick up my pitchfork and torches for no reason!
🤣
Actually got me there with the beginning, thinking this was going to be some MHX critique. I did recognize the iOS sprite on the thumbnail, but I thought you picked it without knowing.
It's my first time seeing the iOS port in action, and oh my god, even actual Megaman flash games play better than that. Guess it was just a side project for a quick buck or something.
This was my first Megaman (snes) game way back then.
Yup, it's disappointing that conquering a specific boss no longer affects the other certain stage.
I actually like the IOS port, I first played it in 2022. Here is my quick pros and cons list.
Pros
1. Great touch screen controls on the smaller Iphone, I recommend using the Zoomed Out Display, and turning on Auto Climb, Auto Ladder and Auto Charge.
2. The exclusive side modes provide a new challenge along with achievements.
3. Three difficulty options, While normal is not 1:1 with the SNES ver, Hard is harder than SNES.
4. No Gacha and grinding mechanics like X Dive. While it does have a silly store, what you see is what you get.
Cons
1. The graphics / FPS are just acceptable, and do indeed lack in spots. That being said it looks better on a phone.
2. The frame rate is indeed lower, but even with the lower FPS the controls feel fine so it's alright.
3. No stage changes.
4. No smooth level progression, things are in chunks.
So with all this in mind I can still recommend it.
Anyways this was still a good video. It was professional, so even though I don't agree with it, it was a good watch. :)
My introduction to Megaman was by playing Megaman 2 on the Beeline port on an iPod Touch.
Crazy enough, that shit was better than the original MM2
I remember playing that one a lot. If only I had a way to play it still.
3:40 "along with that will be this weird claw thing I had to do, so I could play the game properly"
_(looks over my hands on the snes controller w/ one thumb on Y and B, and the side of my index finger pressing the A button)_
*CRIES*
Shout out to this being the only Mega Man game I have beat to this day. I am 23 years old. Let that sink in.
I was furiously typing out a pissed off comment and then I heard the switch. Well-played.
I'm glad you gave it enough time for the switch to happen lol
My first Mega Man game was X1, I played it on a collection of old games for the ps2, and when I saw the remake in the app store, I got it, and I instantly regret for clicking the button
The X Collection version of Mega Man X is awesome. No slowdown and the PS2 controllers feel great for it.
Can't you use a Bluetooth Controller? On the ipad
The game doesn't have Bluetooth support.
Not all mobile ports of classic games are bad. The mobile ports of the classic Sonic games are pretty good. Screen size is right, you can mess with the opacity, and the fact that the only button is jump makes the Sonic games lend themselves well to that kind of control scheme.
Mega Man X does not work on mobile.
Yeah. The Sonic remasters are fantastic and there are some that made the switch to mobile in an admirable way. Adventures of Mana comes to mind as I found it to be okay, even if you don't use a bluetooth controller.
whitehead and his retro engine really nailed it, before retro engine was featured since sonic cd there were only lazy emulator ports on smartphones.
Ironically the mobile Final Fantasy ports were mostly alright too, the graphics were terrible but other than that they were actually better ports than the more recent ones.
Where is even the Brown Bat in Armored Armadillo
No idea. Maybe it's in hard mode.
4:32 God, this is a crime
No it's not
1:26
I get that sonic the hedgehog reference lol
You know whats funny? This port was actually released really close to a megaman 2 ios port... which was a 1:1 port of the nes game with a save system instead of passwords, an additional EASY difficulty thats even easier than the NES' normal mode which was listed as the NORMAL setting in this port and the ability of replaying stages to get more e tanks.
With the only cuts being the pipi easter egg being removed. Hell it even runs at 60 fps! ... unfortunate that it was delisted and replaced with "megaman 2 mobile" which was based on... the java port...
I remember that Mega Man 2 port! I played it when I needed to kill some time and it was alright. The controls held it back, but native controller support was not an option.
Why does this remind me somewhat of the sonic mobile game before Whitehead redid it?
I don't know. I think the Backbone Sonic ports were passable, despite having awful audio.
nice job on the double bait lol, but as soon as you said that it wasn't maverick hunter, ooo.. I knew what version you were talking about lol.
Good to know people stay to the end of the opening to see where the video's going.
I'll take "Things I didn't know that existed and now I want to erase from my memory" for $200, Alex.
"Remember, you have not reached your full power yet.
But for $3.99 you CAN!!!"
I mean, it would be fun for going through the game as overpowered as possible, but why not unlock that as a mode? I'm sure the answer is $.
uhhhhhhh, holy shit - i woke up this morning planning to start researching what sort of pc i should look into for an upgrade (anything would be an upgrade from what i'm using). i'm more focused on music production but i also need something that supports basic gaming, so nothing fancy.
finally, a youtube ad that may have just made my life much easier
I literally just emulated Maverick Hunter on my phone and called it a day.
Yknow I played this a lot in my teens, it was fun to have on the go but I hated how specifically dash jumps controlled, the game was just not made for the phone. Microtransactions were stupid but it was kinda fun to play through the first stage with the first armour and all powers. As a novelty it was kinda neat for the time, just dunno why they made it for that game, why not do something new? I spent more time with mhx in the future after getting a psp at the time. My first experience with the x series was x 8 and then later the collection though, good memories with those. The lc was a great thing to happen for me as well, super happy it happened. Gotta restart my x 8 playthrough some time on my channel and get it done right
The only silver lining to this game is that it may leads some people to go emulate the original on the same device.
I kinda applaud the overhauled visuals in terms of interpreting all the pixel art in the game into solid drawings, but it's still a bit like....ehhhhhhhhhhh.
Who thought Mega Man with on-screen buttons was a good idea in the first place?! Mega Man games require way too much precision for such clunky controls.
I do hope that someone extracts the art assets from this game to be used as a mod or something like that.
The sprites are available, but the problem is that it's missing frames of animation, compared to the SNES one.
What was it with early 2010s mobile re-releases and absolutely terrible graphical redesigns? The old Final Fantasy rereleases had absolutely terrible graphics (despite ironically being better than the newer pixel remasters in every other regard) as well. I don't get why Capcom even put in the effort to redraw all the graphics when they were clearly phoning in every other aspect of this port.
The music is $3 because of licensing
Oh my god. The review at 0:52 was me when I was like 11 or 12. I am so sorry.
I should have blurred the name. Now I feel bad.
@@GottaBeFrank nah its cool i was just flabbergasted to see that i used to like this game lmao
Perhaps the most infuriating intro to a youtube video I've seen, followed immediately by an ad. Truly painful stuff. Nice one.
Dude I forgot bout this port! I forreal liked the artstyle. Back in the early mobile port days they really had font issues. It's just so clean and it's not right lol but then again maybe it's my old man eyes not liking crisp characters. This could be fun with a controller
I wish capcom would contact the taxman to make versions with the retro engine, at least for the snes games
As far as I know, the retro engine is not property of Sega, anyway, a hug
Never even knew this existed, first thing I thought of when I saw the art style was that SF2 remake
I'm surprised you didn't try to also bait with Mega Man Xtreme
That would drag out the bit too much.
Sadly that’s the only way I could play MegaMan X for a while. I played the legacy collection version back in June and I was amazed.
Before play the video I thought you gonna be talking about the MS DOS Release of Mega Man X which came in 1995, which despite removing the slowdown in some instances, had some weird things like... No mech piloting, and lack of some transparency effects. And the game felt jank to me.
On the iOS game, is a fascinating product from it's time and Capcom was at their low, with some questionable choices.
Also, it was kinda of a tendency from publishers trying to milk some money releasing shitty versions on iOS? Remember the UMK 3?
Bro you got me Twice in that intro
Especially with Maverick hunter 😂
Haha that fake out at the beginning was pretty funny!
I have beaten easy normal and hard and I got nothing to do :/ in iOS ver so the only thing I’m going to do is Get some achievement
I played a Super Nintendo version and that version rocks
It's one of the most replayable games, for me.
Bruh that version looks like a flash game
Yeah. That's what I originally thought, when I first saw it.
The absolute 1-2 bunch of bait and switches right at the start
I was debating whether I should do it or not. After seeing some of the reactions, it was worth it. It was also cool to see that viewers didn't take it personally lol
@@GottaBeFrank I had a ten page essay written in Maverick Hunter's Defence in the short space between bait and switch lol
To be fair to the reviews: the game before that was X-Over.
Yeah. I think Capcom made the right call in ending that one. It looked... really, really bad.
I wanna say this about MHX, while I like the X storyline, the Vile storyline is a fun idea, but they chose to make EVERY LEVEL except the final have the same song, and it's obnoxious and draining to listen to
Yeah. Probably the weirdest idea for the entire remake.
6:26 am I the only one who finds the “Hachoo-ken” joke hilarious !?
You really got me at the beginning because i was about to go monkey mode but epic vid!
Thank you so much
I bought this version along with the decent Mega man 2 iso version and soon after the mega man 2 app was delisted but this “amazing” x port is still on the app store
i genuinely can't believe that this re-released on android for _double the price_
Oh yeah. Thankfully the DLC is included, rather than behind a paywall.
I didn't even know this existed. I wasn't missing anything apparently.
Not really missing much, except the unique art style they went with.
Damn....I've heard this port was shit but.....THIS IS BEYOND TERRIBLE! IT LOOKS LIKE A SHITTY FLASH FAN GAME FROM 2001 MADE COMPLETLY IN MSPAINT AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT PLAYS LIKE ONE TOO
Dude baited us about 4 times in one minute then dropped the ad. Was curious but now just annoyed.
I did not consider the ad part, though you could use the available time codes. Sorry, but the bait was too funny of an idea to pass up. 😁
The mobile version of Mega Man X is the Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for GBA of Mega Man games.
No. This game is consistent. That is something I can't say about Sonic 1 GBA.
Man, I never played this version, but I always thought the DOS version had issues....
My brother don't do that intro again 😂. I was about leave
No other game, in the franchise, will give me this kind of power. Actually, the NES games-
That intro is a good way to scare someone.
Yeah. I got a few people, but thankfully they all got it and got a good laugh out of it.
2:25 that thing is easier to overlook when Its smaller sprites compared to the IOS game who have so gigantic sprites
Unless you select the option to show the entire screen. Then you get something resembling the original. The sprites aren't large because it defaults to being zoomed in.
I was about to be legit angry but then I realized the video title is clickbait as you were going over the mobile port LOL
X for existing in this realm is pain
I had mega man 2 on my old ipod touch, I wish I could turn it on
Yeah. It's a shame that one is no longer playable. I remember killing a lot of time playing it in high school.
You know what I cant unsee, he has 1 frame in his running animation in which he opens his mouth, its so weird.
I looked at the sprites of the original and I think I know where that came from. The sprite in the original has a lighter pixel next to the black one, for his mouth, and they might have interpreted that as an open mouth.
I’m really wondering if smartphones from 2011 really can’t run an SNES game properly that they had to de-make the game like this. I mean scrapped that, did they have to sacrifice the frames for classic megaman to work on phones back on the day like that? I remember there was a port of Monster Hunter freedom unite on mobile before, that looks decent, should have put more effort on megaman too Capcom.
Thought it was gonna be Dive from the intro lol
I still don't know why maverick hunter x, when I play on both original console or emulated, will take one second to move left or right 😭
No idea what's going on with that.
I think those play store reviews were from Capcom themselves just like when Square made a ton of positive fake reviews on metacritic for Balan Wonderworld.
You had me worried for a minute. I thought you were gonna say the original old SNES game was horrible. 😂 I was like are you nuts? But you meant, mobile. I never played any old games on mobile, specifically because I already foresaw there'd be problems. Normally, some things you can learn to adapt to with a little work, but something like that, you're asking for trouble.
As mid as this game is nowadays, I am thankful for it. It and the Mega Man 2 iPod ports were my only access to Mega Man content growing up, especially with how I had easier access to them in secret with how restrictive my parents were with video games growing up. It’s not a good port, but it’s the best some of us had, and I have a fondness of it, even though it’s the worst version of the game. =>
I remember that Mega Man 2 port. I loved it.
And people still care about the Street Fighter Move? I never did. The way to eventually get it was way too far out for me to even consider. What a stupid way to unlock it. In X2 the
Just because you never cared for it, doesn't mean others don't have to. Besides, it's a one shot kill for anything... that doesn't block it.
I wish I could go back in time and slap some sense into my 2013 self when I actually thought this was a good game
Nah. We all have that moment. I can list a bunch of NES games I thought were amazing, only to return to them and realize how bad they were.
And the x series the og ones are on switch witch is amazing so now you got a GOOD portable version or original basically and you can play it on a tv because of switch capabilities it’s really an awesome system.
*sees the title* He's talking about the mobile port
Honestly what shocked me is that this game was recently added to Google play store for whatever reason
For double the price, but includes all the DLC.
My 1st X Game was Maverick hunter then the super Nintendo and I havent played any other X game in 5 years
X2 and X3 are pretty neat as well. Can't say much on the rest because I have little experience with them.
Here's a bit of a hot take.
Other than the uneven health bars of the SNES games of the first X Legacy Collection, *I have absolutely no idea why everyone treats the smoothing option like it's Satan.*
Turn it off. Move on. Say it's not your thing. Because holy hell the way people had their mind-blowing reaction to Battle Network Legacy Collection and mid-way through they go "EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW SMOOTHING" as if it wasn't optional disgusts the hell out of me.
They treat that optional filter like it murdered their dog and I'm getting immensely sick of the over-reaction.
