Delon made a great choice not to stay attached to Hollywood and to all it's bad films (with quite a few exceptions). His career in Europe was unique and he is famous and a star there and in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Nothing else is necessary.
We can thank French Director Yves Allégret for that decision! He spoke plainly to Delon who expressed hesitancy about his ability to act. "Alain, look at me. Speak the way you are speaking to me. Look the way you are looking at me. Listen the way you are listening to me. Don't act. Live." That hit home for Alain. I hate that arrogance and implication that every actor has to make it in Hollywood to enjoy a certain level of fame that can only be validated by success in Hollywood. Actors like Delon and especially Brigitte Bardot didn't need Hollywood and they still achieved world fame on par with any Hollywood A-lister of their time. In fact I think Hollywood would have reduced big stars like Delon and BB to silly stereotypical French characters anyways and they might not have turned out to enjoy the great careers that they ended up having with mostly French films. That's why Sophia Loren's Italian films are better than her Hollywood films.

In Europe (what some English do not consider themselves to be a part of), French and Italian cinema and European actors were just as if not more famous and beloved than their Hollywood counterparts. James Dean died early so he is in a the category of remembered for being forever young. DeLon is actually in a different category as he actually is a 1960's star beginning in about 1960, the other two? They are associated with the 50's especially Dean. Good for him coming back to Europe and choosing to pursue a career in French and Italian Cinema. All his Hollywood roles were lame and lacked something, it's like they couldn't allow a Frenchman to appear "cooler" than his american co-stars, it's so obvious watching the few movies he made there. No one has come close to him. He was born beautiful and he had his flaws because of his upbringing. He didn't know how to love as he was discarded by his parents when they divorced when he was 4 years old. He was fostered by an elderly couple but they died and he was sent to a boarding school until he was 15 and the he enlisted in the navy.

Looks and acting wise, yeah the three are a good match.

He said "a bon chic bon goût dress" but it's actually "bon chic bon genre" in french but we mostly call it BCBG to make it short.
Good for him coming back to Europe and choosing to pursue a career in French and Italian Cinema. All his Hollywood roles were lame and lacked something, it's like they couldn't allow a Frenchman to appear "cooler" than his american co-stars, it's so obvious watching the few movies he made there. They always had to make the american more likable, interesting or braver or more capable and manly, it's incredibly gratting. Had he stayed there he would just have played a variety of foreigner roles (mostly french stereotypes) that would never be given the gravitas his talent deserved. In fact, Belmondo was also courted by Hollywood at some point but he never even tried to go there because he knew he'd never get roles like in France and he was entirely right about it, Hollywood would have found a way to diminish even Belmondo's masculine physicality when acting because they would have felt so threatened by it.
Also, in what world wasn't he "mythologised"? The only place where he isn't is the USA and that's because they're culturally insular. But the USA isn't the blueprint for the world and Delon is the epitome of male beauty in much of the rest of the world.

There is no comparison, Delon was French, he gives it a plus, more sophisticated, French elegance, forget the hybrid Jewish Hollywood gallants, the elegance and glamour of a European always stands out, perhaps the closest is the great Marcello Mastroianni !

Closest thing to Alain Delon is Robe Lowe. But he is almost 60 (looks like he's in his 40s tho) There currently aren't any young men like Delon, at least in the entertainment industry.

No one has come close to him. He was born beautiful and he had his flaws because of his upbringing. He didn't know how to love as he was discarded by his parents when they divorced when he was 4 years old. He was fostered by an elderly couple but they died and he was sent to a boarding school until he was 15 and the he enlisted in the navy.

I'll add to the pile of complaints: The 50's was NOT when Modernism started. Modernism is dated to the teens. The 50's is actually the inception of Postmodernity. And the French New Wave--with its techniques of jump cut and detournement---are the quintessential postmodernists in cinema.

Thank you! Who is this Porter guy? He obviously doesn't like Delon. Also, his reference to the old laides who push and shove to see their idol - women of all ages I am certain, still find him very sexy and attractive. We all know who Alain Delon is. But I suspect NO ONE knows who "Mr. Porter" is.
