In this video we examine why major scales are so incredibly important to learn, what the reasons are behind that. I rant a bit as I am a scales evangelist, I mention my plant, my bookshelf offers some thoughts too and I also mention:

Awww thank you 🙏
Well done Lyndon. You’ve got the knack of putting things across in a readily understandable way. I’ve known about major scales since the age of 16 but your explanation of their uses makes it still interesting and exciting after all these years. Am 74 today and still learning!
Robert!! Happy birthday my friend and congratulations 🥂
Thank you so much for your kind words and feedback and I’m delighted to know that my videos are helping you 😎😎🤝🤝🎷🎷 by the way I’m still learning too!!
Your enthusiasm makes you a good saxophone teacher. thanks.
Thank you so much. I love the saxophone, playing it, helping others learn, I love the challenges it gives me, everything ❤️🎷🤩🎷❤️🎷
Lynden. Your videos and approach are outstanding…I’m also self taught. Was in band (trumpet) in 7-9th grade), but then picked up saxophone on my own and learned it and played it over the last 30 years from law school to joining the Navy. My approach has been just to play what I enjoy. My cheat, instead of learning scales, was to learn songs in different keys…however, finding that wasn’t really that helpful for music theory…So, now, putting the nose to the grindstone at aged 54 and learning all my scales. Your videos are making the journey fun…
Pete thank you so much for your lovely feedback, it really means a lot to me and I’m delighted that my videos have helped you. Thanks again 🤝🤝🤝🎷🎷
Great videos Lynden, thanks very much. I learned my major scales, it made music so much easier to understand, and reading music.
Thank you 🙏
I think it's important to know them (and the modes) by ear as well as intellectually. My pet hate is books with "all the scales in all the keys". If someone knows the pattern (TTSTTTS), they can play all the major scales without having to resort to the dots.
You're absolutely right!
New subscriber here. Thanks, very clear presentation. Definitely helps!
Thank you so much and really glad that you found this helpful 😎🤝🎷🤝😎
Great lesson
Thank you so much Cathal, really appreciate your support and feedback 🤝🤝🤝
Another great presentation.
Does practicing 2 scales per month sound reasonable ?
I have been trying to do min 15 min scale practice before I practice 5 times per week .
Is there a logical order of scales to practice ?
Thank you! That does sound reasonable and I’d suggest learning the major scales in the order of the cycle of fifths clockwise, so C first, the G, D, A etc. Does that make sense? 🤝🤝🎷🎷😎😎
Perfect !
Will sort your coffee end of the month 🚀
Thank you 🎷🎷😎😎🤝🤝
Ahh…so, the major scales are to music theory as the Mark VI is to saxophones…the thing everything is compared to…
Absolutely!! The major scales are the keys to the kingdom, they really are. We need to fall in love with them and realise how beautiful they are 🤝🤝🤝😎😎😎🎷🎷
