Training for Dubai half Ironman, my first 70.3, aged 52! I learnt to swim a year ago. Thank you for this real, honest video. It's really helped me feel positive that I can do it
Watching you cross the finish line brought back tears to when i finished my 1st IM , this year. I'm glad i was able to relive that moment through you video. 💪💪
Awesome video and journey. I am where you were when you began - can run, just started cycling... swim like a rock. You give the normal person hope. Good job.
Absolutely love this story. I'm on the same journey with veggies. I've done numerous running/ultra trail events and learning the cycling and the swimming. Getting swimming right is brutal! Major thanks for this video my friend.
I love what you did (and sharing your journey). I am that 53 "fat" (i call it more cosy) dad who will try to do the same for a 70.3 IM in summer 2020. Your journey inspired and motivated me even more.
You'll be that guy that people talk about, "my mate did an Iron man". Transports you to legendary status. Well done mate, quite rightly proud. I start triathlon training tomorrow with a target of the Bolton Iron-man 2020
Awesome work my man. I'm in the same boat. I've just done my first marathon and now looking at a 70.3. I'm 40 and learning to swim. I can't seam to get the hang of it but I'll stick with it. Thanks for the inspiration my friend. Great work
Hi, I started running just like you, built it up slowly and have got the bug now. I’m doing my first 22 mile trail running race next week but already looking into doing a half Ironman. Watched a few videos online and came across this one. I was amazing to watch this and see you trained in rugby as that’s where I’m from. Watching this was like watching my self, I can’t swim either. Thank you for posting this and helping others to have a go at someone new!
Great Video. Well done on the 70.3 - i`m doing my first 70.3 at Weymouth in Sept 2020. Have subscribed to your channel. hope to watch more of your videos. Keep up the great work
Thanks for sharing your experience! Awesome job, I'm glad you were able to accomplish what you set out to do. I'll be attempting my own Half Ironman this Fall. I've also considered documenting it. I've done 2 marathon length runs in the past but it's been a few years. Thank you for your insight and inspiration.
Great story, great video. Am thinking about starting to train for a 70 myself and this is very inspiring. Hope all is progressing well with your training. All the best.
Thanks John very motivating got my first Half Ironman in May 2020 my running is nowhere near yours but my swimming is much better !! Currently I can run only up to 3 miles and I am mountain biking for 2 hrs + 3 times a week and haven't even started in the pool yet! thanks again
Fact that swimming is new to you and you did it, it’s awesome. Trying to get my friends to do this. First excuse was the swim. They need to hear you. I am about to do my first one.
Top work. Just signed up for my first half ironman and was browsing some inspiration. Very impressive doing it from a standing start with no real base level of fitness, kudos sir.
Loved this video, helped inspire me to do Ironman Stafford earlier this year. Wish you would do more. Just started following you on Strava, keep up the good work John, you and your girlfriend are a great couple.👍
I did Weymouth in 2017 as well and similar story. Desperate to do a full but unfortunately I dislocated my shoulder badly last year swimming front crawl (this was my 10th dislocation) so had to stop swimming and concentrate on bike/run. Got shoulder surgery in October so hopefully back to swimming early 2020 and then full Ironman 2021. If you haven’t already done it I’d really recommend Long Course Weekend in Tenby. Amazing atmosphere & scenery and a fantastic weekend of swim/bike/run!
Great video and story. Really motivating. I've done one sprint tri and doing another one in a few months. Looking to do an Olympic tri in the fall and work my way up to half ironman.
Great video and congratulations on completing the 70.3! I'm also vegan and 3 years into my Triathlon journey. Stick with it and maybe think about getting a coach. You will be well under 6 hours next time I'm sure!
Well done and thanks for the video. Similar to you, I went vegan, found rich roll podcast, read the book, got inspired. Signed up for weymouth 2019 (1st triathlon) The vid was a big help. Well done again.
Excellent video. Very inspiring. I do plan on doing a 70.3 at some point. I've completed a couple of sprints and 1 Olympic triathlon so the next logical step is 70.3 IM. Have you got a full IM lined up for this year?
Thank you for sharing your journey. It's a real inspiration as I'm thinking about signing up for my first 70.3. How long did you spend training for it from when you started to learn how to swim to race day?
Well done, congratulations. Im training to run my first half iron man in next year. I also imagine that red carpet a lot 😂 do you have any goals now in triathlon ?
Well done Bud, i did this same Half Ironman as my first and loved it. I can see from your face how much it meant to you and i know from my experience how you must have felt. Your story is very similar to mine, where you completed a marathon and now needed a new challenge. I too was a poor swimmer but after joining a Tri Club, i turned it around and got "The Tri Bug". I am now working my way to complete my first full distance Ironman in Wales this year. Its going to be a tough one but I WILL COMPLETE IT!!!! How about you? Are you thinking of doing a full distance?
Not really, had a few knee problems before from running so just tried to keep on top of that by giving my legs a cold shower after training, a good foam roll/stretch and then eating plenty and sleeping to recover - John
@@PartTimeTriathlete revisited your video today. I think i can make the swim. Now worried about bike ride 90k never biked beyond 50k. Another 25 days to go for the race. PLease give me some positive tips
Thank you!!! I was an pro American football player. not built for distance events physically but mentally I never quit....Well...I’m 53...not a strong swimmer..and have numb feet from neuropathy....so why not do a 70.3 event right? After registering for the Bolder CO event with some buddies I thought “what the FUCK did u do?....Your video gave me some inspiration and hope!!! Great tips! Thank you soooo much!!! And congrats on your journey!!! Top notch stuff!!!

Please ignore my poor spelling of SPECIAL at end, this video took a lot of time ^_^
Hi, would you mind sharing with us your detailed plan for 70.3?
how long did it take before you realised the break just had its quick release lever open :)
Thanks for sharing, i completed a short Triathlon in 2018 and have just started training again to complete an Ironman 70.3
Bad ass, I can’t wait to feel that feeling in a April.
Great video. Really thinking that the big 70 is next for me. This story has really inspired me
From someone who has done 7 halfs and 1 full.....this is really inspiring. Definitely on my to do list. Good job, mate.

Swimming still isn't my favourite but good to mix it up

Everyone's gotta start somewhere I guess, but I'm glad you enjoyed, made this to hopefully inspire others :D

The food you were eating definitely helped!
Thank you bro for the upload extremely helpful
Dude, really great work. I hope you're proud of yourself, because I'm proud of you. Now I have to chase down my IM dream.

Wow that's amazing glad it helped you - been a weird couple years for Triathlon training but hopefully some more to come soon 😬- John
Aww this is fab. Thank you and well done. You’ve eased my mind as I am trading for my first in June. Feel nervous now...
Nice one John! I’m training for a very short novice triathlon in a couple of months, so nowhere near a half Ironman, and this is good motivation.
Push yourself in training and then just focus on enjoying the event, good luck - John
Super video. Inspiration for many.
Congratulation man, great stuff...thank you for sharing

I decided two days ago I'll do a half ironman.... listening to your experience. I'm so anxious hahaha. It sounds and seems so scary
It's definitely a challenge. but well worth doing :D - John
I see you with the black and neon yellow suit! That's my color scheme too!
That was a lot of people scheme of choice at Weymouth, probably because it was the cheapest tri suit on wiggle ^_^ - John
Great video and congratulations on completing the 70.3! I'm also vegan and 3 years into my Triathlon journey. Stick with it and maybe think about getting a coach. You will be well under 6 hours next time I'm sure!
Sick video mate! Thinking about booking a 70.3!
DO IT - John
Really helpful and motivational.. What are time limits for each event to get Ironman 70.3
Congrats great achievement I am training thanks for the inspiration

Have you got a full IM lined up for this year?
Sorry for the late reply, but did my full Iron Man last July, planning to make a video soon
Well done man!
Thank you for sharing your journey. It's a real inspiration as I'm thinking about signing up for my first 70.3. How long did you spend training for it from when you started to learn how to swim to race day?
well done, great video , im doing the same way and get to " iramen " - its one of the hardnes helf ironman
Cracking effort mate. Any plans for the full 140.6? :D
Yeah I did the full at Bolton nearly 2 years ago, need to get around to editing it at some point
I'm only able to ride like 20.5kmph at the moment ah! Has been very windy though down here so hoping it be easier in June!
Don't think that should matter too much, the speed will come with practice and if you can get off the bike in good condition to run you're all good
@@PartTimeTriathlete thanks for your thoughts! you dont think the wind matters to much? i go slow slooow into the 30mph winds round here haha!
Good for you buddy! Love the banana!
Well done, congratulations. Im training to run my first half iron man in next year. I also imagine that red carpet a lot 😂 do you have any goals now in triathlon ?

great video well done mate
I liked your video. Nice work! How does the saltwater affect skin rubbing?
As far as I can remember it wasn't too bad apart from some nipple chaffing on the run - John
Bro what's the name of the app you are using to track your running, swimming and biking? Thanks and much love bro❤️
I use a garmin watch and connect it to Strava 😊
Congrats.
Great video! Thanks for that. Did you never get injured because of training that much, or by increasing the mileage of training?
Not really, had a few knee problems before from running so just tried to keep on top of that by giving my legs a cold shower after training, a good foam roll/stretch and then eating plenty and sleeping to recover - John
Well done
wow congratulations! I have registered and now have 7 months to learn to swim.
Plenty of time for that then - John
@@PartTimeTriathlete revisited your video today. I think i can make the swim. Now worried about bike ride 90k never biked beyond 50k. Another 25 days to go for the race. PLease give me some positive tips
I Think the brick training is where you train a whole brick to the Wall you have to have for completing an Ironman hahah
