I have had about 4 breakdowns during the process of writing a literature review for my research methods course. This video has pulled me back from the brink of insanity. Thank you
Your personal analysis is an essential part of the literature review. The lit review is held together by your insights about the relationship between the sources, their strong and weak points, and how they all add up to give us a picture of what is known about a well-defined question or area.
He just sound like one of the best lectures. I have listened to like two Bloody lectures, and I hardly understood what t he y were on about. and he manage to explain in it in like two short videos. G'day, Laz. Thanks for your support. Sometimes teachers want us to seek knowledge out on our own. Look for a new video every Sunday. In the meantime, if you have any writing-related question, don't hesitate to ask. I'm happy to help. If you have any topics you would like to see covered in future videos, please let me know. This seems like an easy one. After your introduction paragraph (which would have the thesis, "There have been a number of important developments in ... since 1990), you would arrange the body of your lit review by development. One key development--summarize the sources that talk about that development and move on to the next development.

In a lit review, you goals are to (1) read sources, (2) write summaries of each source, (3) group summaries together with an introduction and conclusion. In an essay, your goals are to (1) state an hypothesis; (2) present evidence to support the hyopthesis; (3) conclude with evaluation of hypothesis.
Princess--it is your own opinion or ideas that link the sources together in a literature review, which also should be entitled a "literature analysis." In addition to pointing out how sources related to each other, you can also talk about their strengths and shortcomings, in your opinion.
You are correct that one of the purposes of the LR is possibly to find gaps. That is not the same as presenting the argument and main points from your own paper. I found your video after months of research and had already figured out the material you present, BUT love to see it here as an affirmation and truly wish I'd found it a year ago. Many thanks!
A literature review is a series of summaries of what you have read and how those sources relate to each other and tell the history of research in this area.

Where to go? You read and summarize 15-20 articles on the topic. Then divide the articles into categories, each category with its own theme. Then you write the intro to the review, the review, then a conclusion to the review.

Questions is more general than that. When coming up with your sections, don't think in terms of individual articles. Think in terms of groups of articles. For example, a lit review on autism: What are the effects of mercury in vaccines? Is autism a psychological or physical illness? Can brain stem cells reverse autism? Then group articles that address those questions.
I am prepared. I've collected my data, sorted it, and today I'm writing my outline. Your video is extremely helpful. I have to finish an action research project to complete my master's program. That's an easy one, zfreak. Once you have given a regular citation (Groom, 2012), in a paragraph, all you have to do is use the author's name in a sentence with no date: Groom went on to speculate that autism is caused mainly by medical malpractice when it comes to vaccines.

muskatsn--first I have to ask what kind of lit review you are writing: standalone, or part of a larger work? If it is part of a larger work, how large: research essay, masters thesis, dissertation? Lit reviews have not-so-subtle differences depending on where they appear. Next, a lit review is a section separate from an intro to an essay and the essay itself. Finally, find one or two sample lit reviews and read them. Most of your questions will be answered then.
Q1: Any wording from a source that you use exactly must be in quote marks, even if it is cited, to avoid plagiarism. The real issue I think you are asking about is copyright infringement. No. Academic work comes under the Fair Use statute and is not an infringement. Q2. This is a content-related question that you should ask your professor. I cannot guide you on it without seeing more.

That's an easy one, zfreak. Once you have given a regular citation (Groom, 2012), in a paragraph, all you have to do is use the author's name in a sentence with no date: Groom went on to speculate that autism is caused mainly by medical malpractice when it comes to vaccines.
Thank you! This pair of videos has been clear, upbeat and most importantly informative to me. I never thought of arranging by decade, breakthrough, or geography-yes I was clueless. Thank you again for this information, I took notes and feel refreshed to tackle my work

I read a lot , viewed a lot trying to figure out what is exactly "Literature review" this one is the best video. I am so grateful, thank u
muskatsn--first I have to ask what kind of lit review you are writing: standalone, or part of a larger work? If it is part of a larger work, how large: research essay, masters thesis, dissertation? Lit reviews have not-so-subtle differences depending on where they appear. Next, a lit review is a section separate from an intro to an essay and the essay itself. Finally, find one or two sample lit reviews and read them. Most of your questions will be answered then.
Thank you David... after all the endless hours of studying I got nothing but confusion and complication. You made real, simple and clear.
Flower Girl --great to hear your skills are blossoming
Q1: Any wording from a source that you use exactly must be in quote marks, even if it is cited, to avoid plagiarism. The real issue I think you are asking about is copyright infringement. No. Academic work comes under the Fair Use statute and is not an infringement.
Q2. This is a content-related question that you should ask your professor. I cannot guide you on it without seeing more.
You are very welcome. Glad it helped.
