Finding the cause of a squeaky cuckoo clock

  • I have a squeaky cuckoo clock. Researching the problem on NAWCC.org's message boards, I found two possible causes: 1) the pendulum hanger top is squeaking against the stirrup (the u-shaped wire that the hanger hangs from), or 2) one of the pallets of the anchor is squeaking as it drags against the teeth of the escape wheel.
    In this video, I show that the problem in this clock is #2: it still squeaks even when I've completely removed the pendulum hanger and am moving the end of the crutch back and forth by hand.
    It turns out that fixing this type of squeak is a challenge for even very experienced clock repairers, so I'm going to leave it alone. It isn't anywhere near as loud as it seems in this video.
