WTB Trail Boss Tires: Old Versus New + Super-Cheap Tire Sealant

  • The WTB Trail Boss is an ever evolving tire. In this video, I compare a previous model tire to one of the newer models. The new Trail Boss is a much more aggressive tire with taller knobs that are more spaced out, allowing it to dig in more and provide more grip. Although it is designed as a rear tire, I like using it as a front tire on flow trails and moderate tech. The new aggressive style is also paired with Slash Guard which gives you a much more robust casing but there is some added weight.
I also finally get the chance to try out some super cheap KOM Cycling tire sealant that I picked up from Amazon. Right after mounting the old tire, it faced its first test: A small hole that it quickly sealed up. But only time will tell how if this KOM Cycling sealant is a bargain or just some waste of money.

personal opinion: if you ride hard pack, or loose over hard, get trail boss front and rear. the 2.6 up front is plenty Chonky for hard hittin' conditions.
if you ride up in the Loam, (portland/flagstaff/smokey's) the Verdict 2.5 up front with the TB 2.4 out back is pretty dang good. hard to believe these are overlooked while the DHF and Kryptotal are hogging the spotlight.
*another tire that reminds me very much of the 2.4 TB's sidewall knobs is the vittoria Martello. i run one of those as a front on my hardtail.

Yeah I thought about a 2.6 Trail Boss for the front and looked up specs. I don’t remember exactly but it was similar weight to the 2.5 Vigilante and with the Vigilante you can get the high grip compound. Seems like the most versatile combo although I’m sure it wears quicker.

Got a trail boss on the rear and a vigilante on the front. Just bought a trail boss as a new spare for longer rides. Good to know it’ll work well on the front too. Dunno how you manage to ride with the bell 🔔 Would drive me mad!

The Vigilante is a much better front tire. I have a followup video to this one where I go over my longer term impressions of the Trail Boss. I wish they made it in the high grip compound.

@@downtoridemtb Yeah I will only be using it up front in the event of a catastrophic failure. I do like the vigilante up front. I’ll check the other vid out. Thanks. Great videos!

@@lukegiffardtutt3778 : Yeah I do the same too. Vigilante 2.3 in the front n Trail Boss 2.25 in the back for my hardtail 29er n it works very well to shreds all-year round 😄

I like Ur thinking with this...I like the look of the trail boss and have often considered it...
But I don't like to mix brands and the vigilante looked too heavy and slow...
U cld be onto a winner with this idea!

Yeah I agree on the Vigilante. I think you could get similar performance to my setup from a Ranger on the rear and Trail Boss on the front. My only wish is that they would make a high grip version of the Trail Boss.

those are some freaky looking vans shoes bro! haha. Trail boss is good. I only had the wire bead version that came on my bike, but I keep them as a spare tires.

I can’t stand wtb anything , everything I’ve tried of theirs has crapped out or underperformed . Maxxis on the other hand , I’ve never had any issues, yea you’ll pay a bit more but if you shop on wiggle or chain reaction get them on sale for 50 percent off. Just ordered some dhr2’s for 39 each exo 3c

That’s a pretty sweet deal on the DHR2s! I really want to try the redesigned Forekaster. To the WTBs, I don’t really have any complaints with them so far. I wish they were lighter but they would be if I had ponied up and bought the newest one rather than this lightly used 2021 model.

@@downtoridemtb well I switch it up depending on trail type and conditions. Currently I have a 27.5 2.8 Vigilante Tough High Grip on the front and a 27.5 2.8 Ranger Tough Fast Rolling on the back. This combo is great for the trails where I need to pedal to the top before I descend. If Im descending wet trails then a pair of Vigilante’s work well. Im about to try using a 2.6 Trail Boss Tough Fast rolling on the back with my 2.8 Vigilante for mixed terrain. If I’m riding on a pump track or gentle singletrack then a pair of rangers are pretty fun.
      What WTB’s have you enjoyed?
