Down to Ride MTB
США
Добавлен 30 окт 2018
Formerly "RVA MTB". I’m a somewhat experienced mountain biker in Richmond, VA. I love everything about mountain biking. The trails are my happy place. Luckily we have some great trails here from techy riding to fast flow trails that always bring out a smile.
I like to nerd out on the gear too. I do lots of reviews of budget oriented bikes and components. But sometimes you have to spend the big bucks on nice stuff and I cover that too.
Want to send me things to review? Email me at dtrmtb@gmail.com
Buying some MTB parts and want to help support the channel? Click my affiliate links below. Worldwide Cyclery is awesome! Everything ships for free and everything I have ordered has come super fast. Plus they have a great RUclips channel. Nashbar holds a special place in my heart because it is where I bought my 1st bike. It's a great place to find deals but their selection is somewhat limited. Competitive Cyclist is kind of the opposite with some of the most premium bike brands out there.

Marin Cockpit Upgrade - Handlebars Stem & Grips
Marin Bikes was kind enough to send me some parts from their line of components. Not many people think of bike brands when looking at component upgrades but these are definitely worth a look
First up is the Marin Trail Bar. It is a 7000 series aluminum 800mm wide bar with a 35mm clamping diameter. Very nice smooth finish as compared to some other bars that have a bit of texture.
Next is the Marin CNC Stem which is a beautiful piece of CNC cut aluminum. The price and weight is very low for a stem of this style and quality.
Finally the Marin Grizzly locking grips which come in at 32.25mm grip diameter which is a good medium between some thinner grips and some wider grips. They also feature a n...

MicroShift Advent X / Shimano Deore Hybrid - Followup
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.7 месяцев назад
About a year ago I created the “Deont X” hybrid drivetrain by combining a Shimano Deore derailleur with a Microshift Advent X shifter and cassette. After riding it happily for about 9 months, the Deore derailleur had an unfortunate incident with a stick which bent the cage beyond repair. So, I put the Advent X derailleur back on. Going back to the Advent X instantly reminded my why I changed it...
Marin Oso Pedals - Better Than PNW and OneUp?
Просмотров 56310 месяцев назад
Marin sent me a pair of their Oso flat pedals and I was pleasantly surprised. So much so, that I decided to do this three minute review on them. Composite mountain bike pedals are a competitive space but Marin has managed to make something that stands out. They are larger than some of the competition like PNW and OneUp which makes them a more stable platform. They're slightly heavier and coat a...
Vittoria Agarro Review - Better Than Maxxis Rekon?
Просмотров 6 тыс.10 месяцев назад
I've been running a Vittoria Agarro on the rear of my mountain bike for over a year now. I wanted to try something different than the ubiquitous Maxxis tires. The Agarro looks a lot like a Maxxis Rekon. But is it any better? Well from what I can tell, it has just about the same level of grip, rolls just about as fast, is more durable, weights just a little bit more, and costs a little bit less....
Rockshox Judy - Easy Travel Increase
Просмотров 16 тыс.11 месяцев назад
In this video I'll show you a relatively quick and easy way to increase the travel on your Rockshox Judy fork. It doesn't require you to remove the lower legs. Most Judy forks are 100mm travel but they can be increased up to 120mm of travel. This process is also pretty much the same on a Rockshox Recon fork. You will need some specialty tools and lubricants to get the job done. I have some affi...

So lets find out of Vittoria is a trail worth alternative to Maxxis. Want to grab one of your own? Help support the channel wit...
Nakto Cruiser - A Super Fun Beach E-Bike
Просмотров 554Год назад
The Nakto Cruiser is a fat tire e-bike. I was sent this bike to review and the timing worked out perfectly with my beach vacation. I was able to assemble it and have a blast riding on the beach. The battery strength and the 4" wide tires were enough to power through the sand. The battery life was impressive too, with most rides I did only consuming about half of the battery power. Check out the...
2023 Marin Pine Mountain Ride and Review

After riding the 2023 Marin Pine Mountain 1 for a few months, I have a lot to say about it! I've ridden it on gravel, paved paths, technical singletrack, and now finally some singletrack flow trails! It has pleasantly surprised me in almost every situation. The steel frame is the standout. It has the most compliance of any hardtails that I have ever ridden. I can say that the hype is true... st...
O-Hill Trails - Mountain Biking in Charlottesville, Virginia

I met up with Forrest from the FoCo FlowShow to ride Observatory Hill, AKA O-Hill, in Charlottesville, Virginia. As with most places mountain biking, the speed you carry can increase the difficulty of these trails. O-Hill is a relatively small area but there ar...
Marin Pine Mountain Dropper Post Installation
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Год назад
The new 2023 Marin Pine Mountain 1 is proving to be a capable bike on the trails, but there is one thing holding it back: The seat post. Like any modern mountain bike, it can benefit from a dropper post so you can adjust the seat height as you're riding. I have the PNW Ridge dropper post that I used on the Marin Bobcat Trail and luckily it is the same diameter seat tube on the Pine Mountain. An...

My first new bike in 30yrs wow what a difference but now my family gripes when we trail ride and I'm gone they can't keep up and when on tar I felt like 2 rotations faster than them
A lot has changed in 30 years! Look like you have some more new bikes to buy for the family!
My new Marin Kentfield 2 hybrid is equipped with this drivetrain. So far, so good. I not only like the range of gearing; I also like the jumps; they're like Goldilocks-just right!
I agree with that!
175mm Cranks are a hold over from 26er geometry and work great for it, just not so much on more modern bikes.
If I dont put any spacer will it have again 110 mm or 120mm ?
Well the one that is kind of conical on both ends needs to stay. If you completely take out that other one then you’re at 120mm
@@downtoridemtb so , if I take out the short one ill have 120 or If I take both of the short and the big?
Only take out the short one. The bigger on has to stay.
@@downtoridemtbalright man thanks for the response 👍🏻
They just tuiked the geo and made even better but there's almost no content on it. Not even in Marin's sites.
Interesting, I’ll have to check it out.
Is this set up still working out for you?
It is still working out very well. I did a follow up video to this as well so I’d suggest watching that. Deeper comparisons with each derailleur. Although I did get a Microshift Sword derailleur for Christmas so I’m excited to see how that compares but it’ll be a while before I get to doing a video on it.
@@downtoridemtb Well I ordered the 5100 on your suggestion. I wasn't really having issues but looking at all that play in the Microshift was keeping me up at night. (;
Right on, I definitely think you’ll like it.
I'm looking for a cheap MTB to convert to a rigid, and the Bobcat could be it. I loved the video-I was riding a gravel bike in Forest Hill Park this morning. You think the Suntour is bumpy... Good job on the video.
That’s awesome, I bet the gravel bike makes local trails interesting all over again. I kinda want one. Regarding the Bobcat Trail for fully rigid, I guess it depends on what you want it to be like. I’d lean more toward steel and clearance for bigger tires but that’s just me. Anyway, thanks for watching and for the comment!
Well, there two issues with using 5W motor oil instead of 5wt fork oil. Viscosity of fork oil is measured at 40 deg C, while viscosity of motor oil is measured at 100 deg C. Therefore 5W motor oil is way too thick for a fork, which requires 5W fork oil. Second issue is that fork oils contain anti foaming agents, motor oils do not.
Fab video, thank you. Tyre wise, I run a Rekon at the rear and Magic Mary at the front. For me in the UK slop this works perfectly and even in the mud on steep descents it grips like crazy and also climbs incredibly well. Without doubt my favourite rear tyre
Seems like a solid combo although I will say the Forekaster is worth a try for a bit more rear grip. My current combo is Assegai front and Forekaster rear.
@ thank you very much. Will be buying a forekaster when the bike shops open after the Christmas and new years break 👍. Thank you for the advice
@ awesome, hope you like it!
@ thank you so so much. That is great to know
Hi, how did you deal with the frame cap at the bottom bracket insert? I'm asking because I'm curious if it could be done without disconnecting the first cable housing. It may have been shown in the video, but I didn't notice it.
I honestly don’t remember which but I just left one of them off entirely while I had the bike. Possibly the one you are referring to.
great straight to the point review. left a like for you
Thank you!
The Advent X has a V.2 version of the derailleur now and it's a big improvement. The 10 speed has a big advantage over 12sp since two less cogs means you can use a hardened steel cassette. I'm 6ft 225 LBS and I need a stronger cassette because I have broken alloy cassettes in the past.
Yeah I’m either going to try that new one or the Sword derailleur next time
@@downtoridemtb Does the sword have a clutch?
@obxarms7685 yes and not the ratcheting type like Advent.
@@downtoridemtb Not sure I like the sword shifter. I wonder if it works with the X shifter?
It is supposed to be fully compatible with Advent, even uses the same cassette
My.rockshock yudy is 130mm and theres no spacers only the big rubber?
Yeah I think 130mm is the maximum
I bought talon 4 last year in just 2 months Someone stole it. 😅 Abu dhabi
Ah man that sucks! Bike theft is a big problem. Throw an air tag on your next bike. Won’t guarantee you’ll find it but it might help.
But does it also work on the rockrider am 100 Judy Silver TK, which has 130mm of travel?
I’m pretty sure 130mm is the maximum
@@downtoridemtb oh ok, thank.
Agarro rear (paired with a Mazza up front) is a KILLER combo for a fast rolling trail tire combo.
Yep I ran exactly that for a while. Only complaint is that the Vittoria rubber seems a little harder and less grippy than Maxxis DC or 3CT.
Man, I can't get along with the 35mm stem. Ended up getting a 40mm stem that also has a rise.
I actually just ordered a 40mm stem yesterday. Hoping it will help me weight the front wheel a bit better in turns. Excited to try it out because I’ve been riding this bike for over 4 years now with it at 35mm.
@@downtoridemtb haha I think you'll be surprised at how much smoother it's gonna feel!
@@toanmaxdark7 wow for only 5mm it does seem to make a difference! Feels like it slows the steering down but in a good way. Less twitchy. I like it!
@downtoridemtb awesome brother yeah that's exactly how I felt!
Glad to see you again!❤ Keep it up❤
Thanks Omer! Been a while. Hope you’re doing well!
@downtoridemtb thanks, man!
I'm still on my first bike, which iss a 2019 Talon 2 27.5 I got for Christmas 5 years ago. I've ridden the mess out of it and have done more than what it should be capable of so I might need to upgrade the fork and add a dropper post to it. I have already made the drive terrain a 1 by.
That’s awesome! A good fork and a dropper post will make trail riding so much more enjoyable. Christmas is coming… add them to your list for Santa!
Update the poop loop is dry now I try to ride it once a week
Rode it yesterday, probably the driest I’ve ever seen it!
I'd like to check out a DHR2 on the front, I've been using the DHF since 2003 and loved it so I never changed.
Definitely worth a try! Let me know what you think of it…
But seriously, is this all bikes are meant for? In many parts of the world, bikes are primarily used for transportation, even for carrying heavy cargo. Here in Boston, since the pandemic, I’ve seen more people using bikes to commute, and it’s a breath of fresh air. It’s especially great to see folks riding rental bikes home after concerts or big events, helping to reduce the crazy traffic that usually clogs up the streets in those situations. Now, I’m puzzled as to why this steel bike is being tested for downhill "racing." Just by looking at all the eyelets on it, it seems clear to me that it’s designed more for bikepacking or touring. Why not test it for those uses instead? There are plenty of us out here who are looking for solid, utilitarian bikes for practical purposes like commuting or long-distance touring, and testing it in those areas would be more useful.
While I see your point, bikepacking, touring and commuting are not part of my life and while I would like them to be, it’s simply not possible. I’m lucky if I get out for a 1-2 hour trail ride so bikepacking and touring are out of the question. Commuting would be awesome but I’m quite a distance from my work with no road options that are even remotely safe for biking. The last thing I want to do is pretend to know about any of those disciplines by working them into my video. Would be completely disingenuous. So I test the bike based on what I know and what I do - trail riding.
Is it worth it?
Depends on your frame and the type of riding you’re doing. Just keep in mind that the 29er with qr axle isn’t supposed to go beyond 100mm travel according to RockShox.
@@downtoridemtb i've got thru axle, i meant do you feel any difference?
@joaolisboa7775 yeah it will raise the front of the bike a little and slacken the head angle a very small amount. Minor difference but practically free to try it out.
Looking forward to the sword review!
Got another deore derailleur on there for now. May go Sword eventually though.
Is this frame still in good shape after a few years u owned it? Thanks.
I only had it for a few months and then had to ship it back to Marin. It was just a media sample. I have no reason to believe that this or any other aluminum frame would have any longevity problems though.
what is the Fork you used like can i have a link
Couple links in the video description that are hopefully still valid
I had a race here just yesterday! It's so fun to show my friends what I really do while im biking!
That’s awesome, I didn’t know they did races there. How did you do?
Oh No! You just created a RockFox, watch out for that mystical beast!
LOL!
i will try dhr2 front with dissector on rear both 2.4 in the race...
Great combo!
Just added the advent x 10 speed on a mongoose dolomite alx with 1000w bafang brushless motor with aftermarket lekkie 42t bling ring. Easy to install and easy to adjust. I’m very happy with the results
I still got a Microshift acyolte as it simply shifts better and clutch is better design/performer than the advent/adventX. Still tempted to try a sword as its the improved advent/X style and its rebuildable.
I’ve heard a few people mention the Acolyte. Tempted to try it but I’m really happy with the current setup.
FYI the Acolyte shifts the Advent X cassette flawlessly with the Advent X Pro shifter. Pull ratio is the same.
These are Hormel eater units better off getting a used bike off craigslist your money will go further performance wise, don't rush into it yet don't overthink it, make sure to test ride first, the GT aggressor could carry a gas bag over a creek , the redline monocog 29er had flexy Cranks one snapped one winter
Hey man what's a good cra set for this setup? Thanks!
Any with a narrow wide chainring should be fine. I know lots of people have had good luck with the IXF cranks from Amazon.
Nicole Crossroad
What's the frame's size? I saw somewhere that the medium was 34 lbs? Is that the large version?
Yes, large
@@downtoridemtb Thanks!
That’s funny because I recently bent my Deore derailer almost the same way …it was on an old 07 Devinci moonracer ..just bought a new Specialized Sirrus X 2.0 with the microshift advent and I find the advent way more solid and accurate when it shifts it just seems more robust and works better.
Interesting. I wonder if the combo I have is the best of both worlds. Either way, I’m glad you’re happy with the full Advent X setup.
Thanks for the followup. I have the Deore Advent setup on a gravel bike with Microshifts old drop bar shifters. Will be trying it with the Sword shifters soon!
Nice, glad to hear it’s working well for you. I’m still on the same setup and still very happy with it.
If you left. Your fork off you can easily pull the cable through with your hand in the head tube
Dude, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that! Awesome tip!
Check out the mostros as well
Thanks mate run Advent on two bikes and like it.Building up a new Bike and installing Advent X system this time atound.
Check my follow-up videos on this, Advent X and Deore hybrid. Still running that currently and like it a lot
who has these forks can you please confirm, if you hold front brake and try to move back and forth do you feel on right side something like plastic moving and making a bit of a knocking noise?
That helped me out a lot in making my decision. Thanks!
Great to hear it!
My GF's bike came with Rekon front and rear. The rear is worn and I told her to put the old front onto the back and get a new grippier front tyre. She is reluctant to get a chunkier tyre because she liked the Rekons so she is gonna try the Agarro on the front. Hopefully it's the right choice!
Go Maxxis Forekaster up front!
How big are your tires? The Raidon says max tire size 58 mm but my tires are 29x2.35.
Mine were 2.25 but I’m pretty sure a 2.4 would have fit just fine. My rims were too narrow it run 2.4s though so I never tried.
Yep 3 min. Good. I'm thinking of one or 2 Victoria mazza
2.4 rear and 2.6 front would be a good combo for more grip
Give the new mostro a look as well. I have reviewed them on my channel
@KlintonSilvey that’s a heavy beast of a tire!
Modern Motor Oil will not ruin any kind of rubber or plastic seals because Modern Motors have plastic and rubber.
im planning to do a service to my recon, which hasnt been serviced in 3 years. it has 1000+ hours on it and never has been opened... so im rewatching this video again and again trying to know how to service the lower legs just so i can do it for the first time myself. Many thanks for helping:)
Always intimidating the first time. Go slowly, don’t rush, and you’ll be fine. You don’t have to actually open up the air spring like I did. Probably a good idea to get the service kit and replace your dust wipers, foam rings and crush washers though.
Hello friend, do you think it is possible to use the Raidon bottles in an Epixon? of course both 32mm
Wish I could help but I really have no idea
Great video and appreciate the insights on these technologies. Did you end up getting a Sword derailer to compare to the Advent X ver. 2 derailer for this configuration? I'm interested to see how these options stack up against each other for mountain biking and what you recommend.
I did not get the Sword derailleur. Got a new Deore 11s derailleur for cheap from Ali Express instead. So while I can’t say how good Sword is, I can say that I’m really happy with Deore. Hope that helps.
The sword is definitely an improvement version of the advent/advent X design. I'd rather see if it's better enough to outperform shifting and chain shifting over the Microshift acyolte.
I'm going to try one on the back.. i dont push the turns too hard..and although my aggressor that's on there now is wearing well i dont like the uphill traction ( also not the best braking) if at all loose or wet spots .. hoping this one does better climbing. Previously was running a high roller 2 out back but kinda draggy just felt like trying faster tires.
You might like the updated Forekaster then. I’m currently running them front and rear and I like them a lot. I think the transition knobs help with partially leaned turns compared to the Dissector that doesn’t have them.
@@downtoridemtb yeah i can see your point. i dont think it would brake in the rear enough for me or climb loose over hard trails we have as well as dissector. i'll try it and find out.. but all reviews i have seen have indicated it's a good choice for how i'm inending to use it.
