I originally hated this song. I thought it was way too slow at the beginning, but now 2 years later I can say it's my favourite by the shins. it's amazing how it starts with a simple little motif of going E Ab B Db Eb on a synth and then building and adding onto it until it becomes this extravagant and complicated song. It all flows so well together that you barely even notice it until it all hits you at full force. The thing about this is I dont even need to talk about my own idea of what the lyrics mean, since with a song like this the melodies hit me harder than the lyrics.
Bang on. Always loved Shins but never paid much attention to this song. Until I did. It's hella powerful. My favourite dance in the shower and let some anger out song.
No exaggeration, favorite song of all time, by my favorite band of all time. In the past few years, songs and bands have come by my ears, but this song is the most beautiful of all. The little drum break into the 2nd part just sends my whole nervous system shaking. It's the best feeling in the entire world to listen to this song.
I remember in middle school I'd find music by searching through artists' Myspace top 8's hahah Randomly stumbled upon the Shins just after this album dropped and it opened up with this song Picture how awestruck this 14 year old kid was listening to this intro for the first time lol man time fuckin flies now
This song just seems to control my mind in a way no other song ever has or can. It's so extremely unique and is like pure water being poured on my mind. It's just... beautiful.
i think this was the perfect opening song for their album. I had just put the cd in my cd player in my car, when this started playing and i literally froze. It was the most beautiful, unique song i had heard for a very long time...and it still is come to think of it. The Shins are epic and i cant wait for them to come back to nz
Go without 'til the need seeps in your love anymore Collecting of the petals for the stem, And glow, glow, melt and flow, Eviscerate your fragile frame and spill it out in the ragged floor, A thousand different versions of yourself, And if the old guards still defend, They got nothing left on which you depend, So enlist every ounce of your bright blood, And off with their heads. Jump from the book, You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise, See, those unrepenting buzzards want your life, And they got no right, As sure as you have eyes, They got no right. Just put yourself in my new shoes, And see that I do what I do, Because the old guards still defend (petty guards and shiny hands) We got nothing left on which we depend, So enlist every ounce of your bright blood, And off with their heads, Jump from the book, And you're not obliged to swallow anything that you despise, you despise, you despise, you despise, you despise
everything about the songwriting for this song is perfect, from the long intro, lyrics, and completely unconventional song structure as it has no real verse or chorus
you dont have to conform to the uniformity of our society you can escape by painting your own reality what a great way to express the message of the song via music video. compliments to both the shins and the director, and what a fucking awesome song
This is such a haunting, unusual melody with the typically strong and compelling lyrics that you expect from The Shins. This song is a perfect example of why I love it when true artists venture beyond their established comfort zone to try something new.
I stared at the stars at night while listening to this song, very soothing, and it let me think freely. "Spill it out on the ragged floor", the way he said it gave me goosebumps.
You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise. I had to keep that in mind recently when I stood my ground, refused to submit, and went my own way.
I dropped a tab a few days ago and this song has never been more relevant in my life, everyone must appreciate what they have, because you know damn well you are more fortunate than others as long as you have clothes on your back, a place to sleep, and food you shouldn't be complaining about anything.
You're absolutely right my friend. That's what you have to keep telling yourself each day. We should be grateful for what we have, not complaining about what we don't. Make use with what you have. Life is too short to focus on materialistic things.
Way late to the party! Just heard this song while tearing up in the last few minutes of episode 1 season 1 of Extraordinary. Now on my favorites list, 2023!
Overall, one of my favorite songs of all time, but the best way to enjoy this song Windows down, driving on a perfectly warm night in the middle summer, blaring it over the speakers, just to turn it up louder when the bridge comes, and when it ends, we just start it over again.
That's cool. The song is about changing the course of your life and making it better for yourself. The video is about a girl who seems depressed and unable to paint until she changes her canvas (the wall) and her mood along with the mood of the song begins to change from quiet to exciting. Basically, life gets better, which in turn leads to easier sleeping for those who follow the lesson of this song. It's amazing how simple it is once you think about it. Definitely one of the best songs ever :D
is anyone else totally reminded of the Science of Sleep by this? the song's lyrics, sound, title, and the video all scream Science of Sleep to me. wonderful!
When listen to this, I feel as though I've been sentenced to slowly die in a submarine by myself. I'm looking out the window, crying, when I realize how amazing the ocean is. As the song goes on, I notice more. My last thoughts of are the stunning pink coral as I collapse of thirst, and leave my new friend the ocean.
I truly love this song. I listen to this when I was in a very lonely dark part of my life but now I am in a way better place and the lyrics and song sound better than before. I also loved that it's not much known of a song.
this song really had to grow on me... First I didn't really like it... but after a while my opinion about it changed and now I love it!! the lyrics totally fit to the music and the video is great! love the shins!
I thought to myself "I want to listen to Wincing the Night Away" and so i searched for sleeping lessons and played it. No link brought me here, I am here of my own accord. Thumbs up!
ahh funny story.. I discovered the shins as my friend invited me to a concert to acompany him and his ex-girlfriend.. We ate some MAGIC brownies at this house before the concert. About the time the shins took the stage they opened with this song and OHHH MYYY GOOOD.. thats when it started hitting me.. it could of not had been more perfect...
This song is freakin' amazing! I've been listening to it for years & it still gets me at 0:59 (Chills) and 2:27 :) Love these guys! They are awesome in concert too!
This song is my song from traveling in Australia!! I absolutely love the genius that is James Mercer!!! Better than my old favorite New Slang... They've got nothing left on which you depend, so enlist every ounce of your bright blood, and off with their heads!!!! Genius lyrics!!!
I love when he sings "Spill it out on the ragged floor."
Greatest line.
Does that part remind you of any other song by chance!? Can’t figure it out and it’s driving me crazy!!? 😂 live that part too!
Reminds me of hanging out with my brother. We used to listen to this in our room whenever we couldn't sleep.
is he diede? sorry 4 ur loss man, but theres others borthers out there, if u look inside yaself, and in the right pubs/bars/and hangout areas.

Used to listen to this song all the time over 10 years ago! Randomly just remembered it and it feels so good to listen to it again.
I originally hated this song. I thought it was way too slow at the beginning, but now 2 years later I can say it's my favourite by the shins.

Really? This is one of the few songs where the lyrics have actually hit me harder than the melodies but they compliment each other nicely
Bang on. Always loved Shins but never paid much attention to this song. Until I did. It's hella powerful. My favourite dance in the shower and let some anger out song.
It's even better when you have subs in your car.
i feel this. it pulls tears out of me. it's overwhelming like the ocean.
The Shins are amazing
Never get tired of this song!!

"A thousand different versions of yourself."
this music is for the soul
This song just seems to control my mind in a way no other song ever has or can. It's so extremely unique and is like pure water being poured on my mind. It's just... beautiful.

no, their right.
Giraffelord2000 you didn't even spell "they're" correctly. So now you're as wrong as the lyrics!
their pudgy hearts and slimy hands
This song KICKS! I love it!!! Would have never heard of it, if it weren't for that Zune commercial.
Shit. I thought it was an iPod commercial.
Hello from 15 years in the future BTW.
@@davidlericain - I was so much younger back then. 2008!! Thanks for the reminder. LOL!
"You're not obliged to swallow anything you despise" not if I have a say you don't.
THIS is what you call songwriting. One of the very few keeping the dying art truly alive.
everything about the songwriting for this song is perfect, from the long intro, lyrics, and completely unconventional song structure as it has no real verse or chorus

to me it sounds comforting
One of my favorite albums standing in my bookcase. I love to listen to all the songs undisturbed from the rest of the world.
Saw them Thursday night, they KILLED this song :D James is just as amazing live as he is in studio, as is the rest of the band
She is drop dead gorgeous
i brought myself here cuz i love this song...
thank you so much for this song
you're welcome
I love microsoft for using this in a commercial. Such a amazing song and band.
Some songs hit you on the surface but this song and other Shin songs reach down and grab you deep down. They make you feel the music.
I dropped a tab a few days ago and this song has never been more relevant in my life, everyone must appreciate what they have, because you know damn well you are more fortunate than others as long as you have clothes on your back, a place to sleep, and food you shouldn't be complaining about anything.

Brad Kinowski very cool thanks man

Wait for the drop @ 2:27. Just awesome.

Way late to the party! Just heard this song while tearing up in the last few minutes of episode 1 season 1 of Extraordinary. Now on my favorites list, 2023!

i was pretty obsessed with this song a while back ago. the shins are great.
such a gorgeous song! i love the tempo change towards the end.
Overall, one of my favorite songs of all time, but the best way to enjoy this song

When I first listened to this song, i get heebie-jeebies at the part it suddenly gets very fast. I love the Shins!
I love the fact that this video syncs up with any song.

So good on a warm summers day. I get shivers when this song kicks in.
This whole album should have been so big.
“Go without... till the need seeps in” when the first line is a masterpiece, you have to listen to the rest. Only to find it somehow gets better
I truly love this song. I listen to this when I was in a very lonely dark part of my life but now I am in a way better place and the lyrics and song sound better than before. I also loved that it's not much known of a song.
I just broke up with my NARC boyfriend. This song is an empowering anthem for me right now. I could listen to it over and over.

Me too, and I agree!! What an awesome concert.
This song is so beautiful lyrically and musically
this song is so cool and trippy i cant get enough of it
Got all their albums from the library a couple years ago, opened the doors to their brilliance and the Broken Bells. James Mercer is amazing.
This song is like a dream. I love it so much.
this is real music! unlike most stuff people listen to.
This song is my song from traveling in Australia!! I absolutely love the genius that is James Mercer!!! Better than my old favorite New Slang...
They've got nothing left on which you depend, so enlist every ounce of your bright blood, and off with their heads!!!!
Genius lyrics!!!
