Driven is a typical example of how tough it is for film makers, especially if they are ignorant of what can happen in motorsport, to make a convincing film with an engaging plot and eye catching action as well. For the record, although he played a bit fast and loose with some of the off track scenes, like punching a journalist to a pulp (which didn't happen in real life), Ron Howard did his homework properly when it came to Rush. Not only did he use contempory cars from the 1976 F1 season, but Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth pretty accurately portrayed the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda I feel. You can really feel the emotions they have when they're engaged in that epic battle for the championship that amazing year. Daniel Bruhl was superb as Niki Lauda, showing the private mental battle he had to overcome in order to beat the scars he picked up after his firey crash at the Nurburgring that year

As a young open wheel fan in addition to NASCAR, the whole 2001 season for CART was one of the major reasons why I started watching the IRL & increasing the number of F1 races I watched. This weekend plus what happened in September of that year to my favorite driver at the time Alex Zarnardi at the LausitzRing in Germany made me stop watching CART entirely. The series basically became a shell of its former self after 2001 while IRL grew in popularity. As for Driven I agree with the view that it is one of the worst motorsports movies of all time and the video game that was released alongside it is one of the worst racing games of all time.

The worst part is a race in Texas could have been possible.
Instead of the 800hp usual horsepower of that era, they could have raced at 500hp to 600hp... Maybe with more wings.
It's the 230 mph plus that is the issue.

      @therrydicule 2 года назад +1

      @@The52car
That story didn't happen overnight ;) So there is an assumption here that I feel is amiss.
Cart had data having run in Atlanta in the 1980s, run at Rafaela once before (in the USAC era), and had seen IRL&Nascar running in Texas for a few years. They should have known that this oval was a little bit of a different beast.
Furthermore, they did a bit of testing in the winter on December 18 and 19. So really, they were no excuses.
On paper, with these engines, with the parts available at that time you can decrease the turbo pressure (they had a valve just to control that) and change the rev limiter.
Now, they are limits to these engines and I don't know how much turbo pressure they need to run well. I know that the old offenhauser used at Indy in 1973 could run between 700 hp and 1300 hp depending of the turbo pressure, so there is a margin that exist with these engine.
So what I am saying would have needed testing. However, I'm not going completely blind.
Cart at that time were testing different pressure between 37 and 40 inHG, with a difference of about 60 HP. The count isn't there, but it gives indication.
In 2002, they started running the Ford at 34 inHG, with moving the rev limiter from 16,500 to 12,000 rpm which gave about 750 HP. Closer, still a bit much for that track.
So reducing the turbo pressure at 28 to 30 inHG and rev limits at 11,500 rpm and it might have worked. It would have needed testing, because I am not 100% sure if it would create problems with these engine. That kind of testing can be done on an engine bed, and these engines would have needed remapping as well for the injection.
If you ask me to do it overnight, I'm doing that and say "that's on you, boss, if we look dumb and the team are going to complain a lot about engine mapping."
As for wings and speed on the turn: this particular oval was pretty much flat out anyway, so having more wings would pretty much just create more drag. Which is good because that's what you want to slow down these cars. However, this too need testing because a Monaco configuration on an oval is stupid and could create problem with the suspensions because there would be too much pressure...
However, between these wings and the Monaco type configuration, there are many options that can be considered.
Basically, it came down to planning, testing, use of appropriate data, and critical thinking to give an appropriate package of rules for this track.
I'm certain that this track can be raced with Cart cars from that era, it just need the appropriate package.

So the Joe Tanto/Beau Brandonberg thing in the movie as far as I know it:
The Detroit Grand Prix some years ago in movie lore, there was some wreck that probably Joe caused & it nearly resulted in both getting killed (Though this is debatable because of Beau's character before the movie). Beau continued racing while Joe retired.
As for Carl Henry being paralyzed, he was just upset that Jimmy Bly chose to save Memo Moreno instead of continue to race & said if he was in that car (Which he says he can't because of him being paralyzed) he would have continued racing. Honestly Carl Henry's was the only character in the entire movie that didn't have any sort of development.

So from the bits and pieces I’ve put together to explain Drivel’s plot holes from various credible sources. There’s a montage of drivers dropping their kids off to day care, pre race rituals etc I believe that was meant to be the opening of the movie. The next action sequences was meant to have Sly “Joe” and the director of the movie Renny Harlin (giving himself a cameo appearance) racing each other. Which leads to a collision where Sky’s car jumps the fence and ends up in the Detroit river and Renny’s car spins off the track and through the day care centre injuring Burt’s character and killing a bunch of kids. You can thank Paul Page for digging in and forbidding that small scene in particular for not making into the movie

No appropriate tests were conducted at Texas by CART. Nowhere near a full field of cars tested there prior to the race. No one lapped above 226 mph in testing, but that Friday Tony Kanaan topped the speed charts at over 233 mph. Paul Tracy would set the all time lap record at 22.542 (236.678mph); over a second faster than an IRL car had even run at TMS. High G-loadings were causing drivers like Gugelmin and da Matta to think they were crashing (when everything was actually fine), prompting them to correct their steering, and crash. Max Papis, when called back to his pit, could not discern the frontstretch from the backstretch. One unnamed driver blacked out in Turns 3 & 4. He was on the backstretch, lost consciousness, and had no idea how he got to the frontstretch.

I know that Indy Car has been inching closer and closer to the CART design, but it seems drivers are getting more comfortable with the speed.
What do you all think about the cars getting close to the CART speeds.

Fun fact: Sam Schmidt (Yes, THE Sam Schmidt who was a OG IRL driver before becoming paralyzed after a horse riding accident) became addicted to Reynolds' character and used it to motivate him to start his team again

Sam Schmidt was paralyzed in a testing accident, not a horse riding accident. The early IRL cars were terrible in rear impacts.....

I remember that weekend. I saw that movie ( the inside the helmet shots were the best) and was disappointed by the days of thunder crashes. I was looking forward to the race to compare speeds to between CART ,Indycar. and Nascar. Not a good weekend for CART.

Solid video, but I would add an * as worst non-fatal weekend. I understand that this might be the worst PR weekend, as death in motorsport usually results in safety upgrades, but not major dips in attention. However, IMO deaths always make a weekend worse than a bad PR weekend.

I'm just surprised no one makes a meme about Driven to make fun of that total mess of a racing film.
Especially on the scene where Sly pitched his Champ Car sideways on Toronto trying to pick 3 coins with left-rear tyre. That scene makes me laugh because Sly tries hard to be Fangio and DK Tsuchiya at the same time. That was totally cringeworthy scene, out of all cringeworthy scene from Driven.
