      @@bodyofhope 1. its not that pricey. It doesn't cost a bit more, but not as much, considering you do have you use a lot more charcoal than black/ dutch procssed cocoa 2. charcoal messes with meds, black/dutch cocoa does not. So her cakes can be a liability. 3. Charcoal is also bad for the teeth. Regardless if the whitening effects of it, its highly abrasive, and dentists advice not to let it come in contact with your teeth because it can wear on you enamel. So that means its not advice to brush or consume it if you have to chew, which you do with cakes. You don't have that problem with black/ dutch cocoa, which also has health benefits without , like charcoal, without damaging your teeth.

      As a person who takes several medications, I understand your concern, and would ordinarily agree with you, however the amount she used was less than a teaspoon in the entire batch of frosting, which is distributed throughout the entire cake. Meaning anyone eating a slice would only get a minuscule amount. I wanted to be sure bc you're right, it's important. For children, it takes 25-50 grams, for adults 25-100 grams of charcoal to neutralize drugs or poisons. The conversion is 4.2 grams per teaspoon, and only about a teaspoon was distributed throughout. They could eat the entire cake by themselves without an issue... but a slice isn't going to be of concern. I would say warning parents of the dangers of food dyes like red 40 in a cake is probably even more consequential than this particular instance.

Because even if you disclose that you use charcoal, I imagine cakes are used for parties, and everybody partaking the cake may not be aware of the charcoal because the host might not feel the need to inform everyone before the cake is cut. Medications are personal and private for some people, so even the chance that Someone may unknowingly consume a big slice of charcoal cake? It's not great. You don’t need to use activated charcoal. Just use Dutch-processed cocoa rather than regular cocoa, and it will give your cakes or icing a black hue. It’s the same type of cocoa that gives Oreo cookies their stereotypically black appearance. This type of cocoa was normal until the mid-19th century, when alkalised cocoa began to be favoured, and now that’s usually the kind of cocoa powder that you find in stores today. But Dutch-process cocoa powder not only turns your baked goods naturally black, it gives them a nice, rich flavour, as well!
    Also, Dutch-process cocoa was originally used in the making of red velvet cake, which created a chemical reaction causing the cake to turn “reddish-brown”, and negating the need for red food colouring.
    But please don’t use activated charcoal. As others have said, it is known to stop medications from working properly.

    the phrase “natural charcoal” is hilariously redundant and disingenuous marketing-speak. “natural” does not mean safe. that it does is an incredibly stupid and irresponsible thing to imply. charcoal as a food additive is potentially harmful to anyone taking medication; it binds to and nullifies many common drugs within the body. considering cakes are shared at events with large groups of people who are likely unaware of this ingredient’s presence and effects, you are constantly putting customers in the way of potential harm. your conduct here seems more like a matter of ignorance than cynicism, but harm-done does not answer to intent-had. at minimum you need to start issuing disclaimers. but in the interest of ethical business practice, inclusion and safety for your customers, and the quality/flavor of your product...just use alkalized black cocoa powder.

But the way it can also absorb medication is also so serious I don't get how it can just be used as a random food coloring, like imagine some girl just took her pill then she has a piece of black cake and it just cancels her pill and she gets pregnant. Now about someone who needs medication for a much more life threatening issue.. I get that people should be responsible for themselves and not take something that can harm them. But not everyone knows that about charcoal. They see it as just that "cool black food coloring". Many people ate black hamburgers and icecream cause they were trending and ended up in the hospital and learned AFTERWARDS that charcoal has that effect and then they thought "then why tf put it on food??" and tbh I understand why they would ask that

    It’s very important to know some charcoal can interfere with medication you take so this cake is not to be consumed if you are medicated

    Oooo... I had a black and white cake for my birthday once (I think I turned 19?) and my mom made it for me. She made a skull on the top. It was cool. I kinda want another black and white cake sometime.

    Why use the charcoal and not dark cocoa that makes it taste like Oreos? Does it give a different hue of black?

    I made my kiddo a black and purple cake for his birthday last year, we took it to a local restaurant for after dinner on a saturday night. It was hilarious and thank god most our family and the owner and staff had a sense of humor. Some of my in laws still are not speaking to me... There were multiple perks.

      @bostonb4kedbeans - 😂 It turned everyone's mouths including their teeth black and didnt go away for a few brushes. My sister in law was NOT happy. Made it even sweeter somehow.

    Have you tried finding and using black cocoa powder it can make things black and doesn't cause staining...at least it didn't when i used it.....def use a bit of normal cocoapowder and bit more sugar with it though

    • @elegantsweets
      @elegantsweets  6 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, I tried it once) it had a rather bitter taste, so I preferred the taste of the frosting with charcoal coloring. Perhaps I should try another brand of black cocoa again.

      i have used the cocoa trader black cocoa and while it still has tiny bitter taste that was using it alone in a cake and even then it was barely noticeable..... maybe try that brand? i used it with a french vanilla cake i made for my mom. @@elegantsweets

    shouldnt use charcoal if you dont put a warning.

  • @LorienInksong
    @LorienInksong 5 месяцев назад +4

    Please stop making food with charcoal. Its just way too easy to have a client not read a warning and eat it when they are still digesting a life saving regular medication. This could kill someone's grandma or grandpa, and for people like myself with a high daily med load due to disability I really don't dare eat things with charcoal at any point during the day.
