- Putting extra distance between us and a Hurricane seemed like an excellent idea for putting a 100-mile test on the transfer case. And we got an excellent surprise.

I was going to call it an evening until this video popped up. Excellent!
A SV Seeker 29 minute video at 9pm YOU CAN COUNT me in!! Thank you Doug
For the transfer case fan find/make some sort of soft fan blades like used in handheld personal fans and attach it to the extra output on the case. No wiring needed, always on when the transfer case is on!
Hell ziptie it to one of the shafts
Yeah my mower transmission has a fan driven by the shaft
BEEutiifull.....good crew, better MPG and Some kinda stowaway, he won't eat much...Good to see all is well!!
If you’re talking about me being that stowaway, I definitely didn’t eat much, I got home and weighed myself and I had lost A LOT of weight. I’m grateful for Doug having me on board
Hi Doug, I found that if you have a mixture of fresh and saltwater, it can cause false readings on your sonar. Different water densities are sometimes the cause of that. Depending on the wattage on your sonar.
Doug, I enjoy your attitude and joy for life. Thank you for being such a good example of what we as humans need to be like. Always learning. God bless.
One of my favorite parts of each video is the showcase of other viewers projects. Thanks for sharing all of your adventures Doug and the handiwork of others.
Doug they make power steering coolers for off road trucks and rock crawlers they are like a heatsink might help keep oil cooler
can't believe they got a DBA to do Windows
That's not a boat. That's a shop with wings. Keep seeing sunrises and sets
Great Video!!! Glad to see the sails getting put back together and working through the list of seemingly never ending things what want attention.....keeps everyone busy......just like the plan. Keep up the great adventure. MrEric
Martin and I had an absolute blast and I can tell you that the positive and funny Doug you see on his videos is the exact same guy in person. Can’t wait to come back!
Thanks again for these videos Doug, can't wait for your next adventure.
25% better mileage is quite impressive.👏👍
I rode out the storm in Lake City Florida just a few miles east of you. No issues and the wind only got up to around 40 MPH. Hope to drive west and come for a visit soon and have a second look at SV Seeker since I helped you do a little grinding many moons ago.
Breaking, fixing, documenting, ruling out the variables. A discovery, cooling fan, 25% fuel savings. A tweak or adjustment, continuous improvements on the sail rigging. Hoping for decent wind and sea fare to test.
Thanks for the video! Always love seeing what you're up to and how your beautiful boat is getting along. As usual, the answers are: lots and apparently great. 😊
Always love it! Nylocks like a little bolt beyond the nylon to hold best. ❤
We love Dauphin Island. Spent 5 weeks there in Fall of 2022. Installed Solar Panels and invertor on our boat while there. Heading back this November. Smart move for a Hurricane hole.
One happy u-joint tip. when you remove the cap, the grease in there is pretty light and the bearings may get dislodged with handling or hitting with a hammer. I usually jam a fingerfull of stiff grease in there to shim everything in place. Stray bearings are a curse esp if they lay atop the cross against the cap.
Great work. Love it
2.32 miles per gallon for a 74 foot steel boat is absolutely amazing fuel economy that's damn impressive!!!
Better than my 1988 Volvo
Try adding energy release anti friction metal conditioner to your oil systems and you should see cooler conditions for your transfer case. I've used the stuff for over 25 years in transmissions and crank cases and have had extreme success in extending the life of my equipment..😊
Doug/SV Seeker, good to see that u have gone to a safer place to ride-out the Hurricane. It miss my place by 200 miles.. Keep Sailing Buddy..
Dolphins are 'surfing' your bow wave,, they don't need to flap their tails, just direct their path to continue on the bow wave.
Cheers,ed
I knew Doug and the gang would make that sail better than it was. The HMW plastic should last forever. 👍👍
I was wondering how you made out with that hurricane. Figured you made waves for high water.
yea you have a good attitude
Would like to see more rope work. Thats iteresting as hell. Love to see yall in Charlston, South Carolina one day!
All looking good , Maybe a oil cooling radiator & a Fan .
Great video, Doug. You always have a great attitude and it is inspiring. With all that you are working on with the boat, projects to be completed, projects to be started, things to fix, do you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed, even in the slightest, and what do you do to combat that?
I would think you thought of a high-pressure oil cooler. Love your attitude and work.
"when will it be done"?? Ask Thessius. :) once talked to the guys who maintained a museum piece wwII sub in the San Francisco bay. One of the guys on the tour asked how often they had to repaint. they told us "who said we're ever done?" evidently, once they get down to the end of painting, it's time to start back where they began again...I've heard the same is true of the wooden sailing ships: by the time you get to stern with oiling and varnishing, it's time to start back at the bow again Boats take maintenance and a LOT of it; figure there will always be a list of "get to" jobs and the list will add to just as fast as you mark them off.....
When is the boat ever finished? About the time it will be scrapped... A boat will always needs some work to be done - both maintenance and improvements are the only constance
Ya but this boat is brand new and way to much has broken or needed to be redesigned or replaced. I get it, it's a DIY project but during the build he bragged about the right people and the right equipment all the time and it seems none of that was true. I had high hopes for SV Seeker as I watched the whole build but there's no way someone will trust this vessel a thousand miles from home in open water for it's intended purpose which is a research vessel. Sorry but that's the way I see it.
Here is a suggestion for your pitch control have you thought about sticking or making a lockout for it so it cannot move until you move the the lock
Great video, as always
Cheers Doug from Southwest Uk
Always enjoy watching your progress. I have a junk rig schooner electric drive. Had to learn to sail her myself as there are not a lot of folks truly familiar with the rig on the east coast. You are doing good.
Hi Mr Doug
Always enjoy the content. /aside Many 4wd use 'double-cardon' joints for lessening stress on high angles, that can cause vibrations.
As if you probably didn't know that.
Stupid story: had spent few weeks with friends back in late May in that area. Had forgotten about it until you anchored there at Dauphin Island. (We had also.) Motored towards Pensacola, and we entered that large condo bay just west of NAS, and Captain saw SV Seeker wondering what it was. I recognized it immediately. Would have been great to get over for a tour, but we anchored 1.5 east of you; too far in a dingy for me (at that time anyway!). Think they later did stop by and got a tour. You'd remember them!
As always, enjoy the videos.
You got the spare universal mount spinning for free put a small fan blade on ? What about a oil radiator or intercooler ? You could use the intercooler to make hot water . 200 f down to 180 or 160 would be about right .
Ever think about a diy heat pump? I've been wanting to make one for my sailboat for awhile, one old AC unit and you have an ac heater and hot water heater.
Doug you are my hero. If something doesn't work try something new. Kudos my friend.
Doug, if you haven't bumped up the timing on that engine yet they really respond well to it, its easy to do and it will really help your fuel consumption. So will keeping it at 1800rpm. Down the road I would look at a turbo upgrade, in your scenario you want something that will spool at lower RPM than over-the-road applications which will keep the EGTs low and increase engine efficiency by recovering more exhaust energy.
We had a venting system in the eng room of the tugboat. It forced fresh air in increasing the pressure. It would drop the temperature 1 to 200°f. It wold go from 250 to 100/150 in about 5 min. Did you add forced air into the eng room? A blower to change the air? Co2 may build up if not.
I didn't make anything today, I'm living in and enjoying what I made last year. Me and my converted mail truck are enjoying the cool temperatures up in the Rocky Mountains. 25 Degrees for a low last night, and 68 for a high. It's time to start moving to lower elevations, 9650' is a bit too high.
Hello Doug,
Using HDPE to make another euphroe is a great idea. Would you consider turning batten parrel balls from 60 mm diameter HDPE rods? The slipperiness of the material could also help reduce friction when raising & lowering sails.
I considered that, but so far the golf balls are holding up well and they are cheap and require much less machining.
Wonder how a big chain coupler would work in that?
Your damaged U joint, could it be that they are working at too big an angle? Watching off road channels, they once mentioned that the main shaft should not be more than x degrees out of alignment. Like universal joint is not that universal after all.
both ends axis should ideally be parallel but in practice should remain under 3 degrees...Also he needs to understand the torque curves compared to prop shaft rpm, etc.. The failure of these needle bearing seems to be nothing more than overloading..A boat's driveline is not a bus driveline..
I've been trying not to get heat stroke working on my project being along the Gulf Coast myself.
Coast Guard? My condolences to his Parents. 😉 Submarines for ever 👍
Hey Doug, the weakest part of the splice is where the thick splice meets the standing part. You can increase strength and looks by tapering the splice. The cheats way to do this is when finishing the splice, give one strand another two tucks, the second strand one tuck and no more tucks on the third strand. Hope this makes sense. Capt Ian
I'm a BMW mechanic and the transfer cases I work on are self contained units. I don't think your transfer case will miss the cooling from circulating the oil. The hypothesis is there and the data will show the way!
Great to see all the improvements made after systems are run up in various conditions. I wonder if that UJ failure is related to the solid mounting of the transfer case? Without the freedom to move around that force has found your next weakest spot.
woldent it be possible to use the extra output on the transfercase to driv a hydraulic pump for circulation off the oil with filter and cooler to have a separate system? Greetings from sweden🇸🇪
the bad U junt was the trouble with the controles backing down. from the virabition .
I will be in Cedar Key early next month, will you be in those parts?
Thoughts of putting an oil cooler with an electric fan on a thermostat for the drive hydraulics?
We are taught that our world's surface is over 70% water. If that water is always measurably level over any distance, then how can we be living on a sphere? That straight line reflection of the sun on the sea when it sets and rises can ONLY happen on a flat surface.
Хочешь жить - умей крутиться и выкручиваться , так вот и живём на сфере 😂 да ещё и по морям ходим ...
New world record UHF "LoRa" (Long Range) line-of -sight transmission over 830 miles! Low power, long range, low bitrate transmission. This was accomplished from a ship's cabin (20 feet off the water?) to a buoy (around 5 meters in height). IMPOSSIBLE on a globe 24,901 miles in circumference. ZERO curvature exists over water. This means our realm is FLAT, folks. We don't live on a spinning ball.
At first the mouse at 28:34 looked like the creature from Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, before I realized it was a mouse.
Clock your joints in that driveshaft
I think i can sum up this video in 3 words, "it was hot"
Doug, could the dolphins be confusing the sonar riding your bow ? Just a thought... Where is the sensor located ?
Hey Doug, you didnt fall overboard did ya?...looking for my Seeker fix....
Nope. Got a couple of videos in the loop now. Should have them up on Patreon by the end of the day.
Why not couple the TC I put to the Trans output with a spline or flange coupler. That would shorten the setup drastically and lessen the rear angles.
Would Prussia’s work in place of hose clamps? Abrasion
What is a Prussia?
Why not use gallons per hour? With currents you don't really know how many miles you have been through the water. At some point you'll get a good average and be able to predict fuel used remarkably accurately noting rpms and in your case pitch which might make things a little more complicated. You will find a sweet spot
Gallons per hour does not account for distance or speed. Mph is problematic and Gph says even less.
Are u drying laundry or rinsing sweet an salt from ur stuff
I have just moved to florida.. where abouts are you now, id love to visit. Maybe work some metal (i have a blacksmithing channel)
Doug the genius of your design is that you used common everyday parts to build your boat. Can you image how expensive standard marine part would have been if it failed? Also Availability would be spotty at best.
Bonjours, je vs suit depuis la pose des premières tôles, et c'est super, quel dommage qu’il n'y est pas de dialogue en français ...bonnes navigations . PHIL.
The issue with that bearing… its riding on the one side when normally the pressure is even.
Embrace the Suck!
you should get a oil cooler
👍🏻👍🏻💛👍🏻👍🏻
🤠👍
Google u.s. Coast guard
If I sent you a few car batteries could you throw them in the ocean for me? Safe and legal thrills, doing it for the eels.
And thanks for the continued entertainment and teaching. 👍
